randall???
ive just seen a randall rh100g2 head on ebay for pretty cheap.
just wondering if these are any good? im after a brutal tone (dying fetus, suffocation etc etc) and i just wondered if this would deliver those tones
im already looking at an ampeg vh140 head (cant find it for shit though) and a crate shockwave
the randall is cheaper than both but i dont know whether to go for it
what do you lot think? cheers.

Just get a good pedal and rock out with your cock out. I'm not sure if that's a solid state or tube amp, and to be honest, I'm too fucking lazy to research. Anyway, it's been said before and it shall be said again.
If it's a solid state get yourself a good distortion pedal; if it's a tube then get yourself a overdrive pedal. You can get a distortion pedal that's made for tube amps, too, as far as I know. Chances are that none of the bands you mentioned use the amp's natural distortion.
Hope that helps.

Randall's are the closest a solid state can get to being a tube amp, but it sounds as though you would want to pay more to get a tube amp. They are way better generally speaking, and solid states just don't rack up the same way a vintage tube sound does.

i disagree. if you're looking for a good s.s. amp that sounds very s.s. go randall. they have good sounding s.s. amps, but they dont sound anything like tube amps. they're tight, dry, and sterile sounding. like dying fetus, pig deystroyer, pantera, ect... i havent played any randall s.s. amps that have any tubey characteristics.
if you're looking for s.s. that can sound and react similar to tube amps with the sag and dynamics, i'd say to check out tech 21, and maybe some higher end line 6 stuff. but even still, it's not the same thing.
but for the sounds listed i'd suggest the shockwave or ampeg, though the randall could pull them off pretty well.

I played a randall at my local music shop and the distortion channel sounded very similar to tubelike distortion, yet still not it, thats all I was really saying, I'm not sure what model it was though.

Amen! Fucking Amen! Randall amps are nice SS amps. The amp distortion is unmatched when it come to SS distortion. There are older Crate amps that do just as well, but I have always been a fan is Randall SS.
That amp you seen on ebay will jump drastically in price the last minute. Just watch it and see. I check those listings everyday because I want a Randall XLT cab with vintage 30s. It all comes down to who is the last snipe or biggest last bid.

Be carful of hyped up ads. That amp is just a Radall Titan with a new look. Same as the V2 is the Vmax with a new look. I don't know why Randall didn't make a new Cyclone though. That thing fucking rocks next to the Vmax ( as far as distortion and distortion tone control is concerned ) and kills the Titan amp with EQ options. I tried a Vmax and Cyclone next to each other and the Cyclone killed the Vmax. Why the hell the Vamx is more promoted I will never know ( maybe because it has a tube preamp ).

I'm gonna have to jump on the randall bandwagon too. I have an old rg80 deluxe from the early '90s that I use for late night practice and lazy day jamming. On its own, its got a nice and full distortion with a sparkly clean. Once I put my SD-1 in front of it, it turns into a sustaining monster.
All in all, most randall SS amps will give you a great sound on a nice low budget. If your a cheap ass (like me) gunning for a low price amp, a randall can't be beat.
If your checking out the lower priced amps, you might also want to keep an eye out for a peavey XXL (not to be confused with the XXX). They are also an SS amp that sounds pretty fucking good. Also, you might like a laney AOR amp head and a cheap cab. The AORs usually go on ebay for $200-$350 and are also a fantastic poor man's amp (plus they are tube amps and they FUCKING LOVE OVERDRIVE PEDALS).
Point of advice, don't just buy the first thing that you see. Find something in your range and do some research on it.

Give the Peavey trans tube models a try. They are a hell of a lot cheaper than most stuff out there, and they sound killer. My buddy has a Bandit 112, and with a Metal Zone in front of it, that thing eats babies. The trans tubes are SS amps that try to mimmick the sound of tubes.
Crate also makes some great SS stuff that's not at all pricey, and they come with a ton of effects too.

Actually, they just came out with a new tube amp that you can change out the preamp tube for different sounds. Their's like 20+ preamp tubes or so.

Well, besides the Randall RM series tube amps, Randall just came out with another tube amp that comes in combo amp form. If you pick either Tube or SS I think Randall are nice. At least for me they get no better.
Other then Randall, well... I like Randall for distortion, but Roland and Fender tube amps sound super nice clean.

I agree... I have a Randall RH200SC and it gives me a very nice raw and edgey metal tone, but it doesn't sound like tube amps at all. It has a unique type of sound even compared to other SS IMO (I've tried Peavey XXL and Line 6 HD147)...
I saw that someone else was looking for a Randall XLT cab with vintage Celestion V30s, I really wanna get one of those too. Does anybody know why Sam Ash or GC don't carry Randalls?, I've asked them about it but they never give me a straight answer...all they said is that they can order me one...but i want to try it out before i buy it.

I've got a Randall RG50TC tube combo and I love the thing so much. It got the perfect tone I was looking for. It was high gain yet it was very articulate. The notes didn't slur together. I miss it so much though, as about a month ago I was walking around playing guitar and I accidentally stepped on the cord and ripped the input on the amp out. I've been meaning to get a new one but I don't know where to look for replacement parts.

i was looking at that amp and reading sum reviews but alot of them say that it doesnt have as much gain as u would expect a randall to have. do u think it has enough gain for stuff like trivium, opeth, or dream theater??

Plus its a tube amp so you can use a overdrive pedal if you ever wanted to boost the preamp for even more distortion. Tube amps handle pedal to preamp boosting wonderfully.
