Help for a specific technique
Hi.
Per tempus I am working on doing some excercises on doing some solo techniques used often by old heavymetal bands, powermetal bands and such.
The technique, legato + picking or whatever (not sure what exactly it is called)
is something that looks like this:
Quote:
--------------------------------
--1512---1215121512---121512-
-------12------------12--------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
and so forth.

Now, thing is that I'd really like to know how exactly to do something like that, and make it sound smooth.
I've given some tries on how to do it, but I always end up with annoying open string noise after having PO'ed the 12th fret 3rd string.
May I remind you that there are alot more examples I could give, but since I am at my sisters computer, I can't do much around the web, like searching for these examples. Theres also the technique (faily similar to the above) which is used in Rhapsody's Dawn Of Victory, which is in the very first part of the solo(s) going on in that song. The tab I am referring to, is the one found as GP4 on mysongbook.com.
ANYWAY - If anyone could describe how to do this, or for example make a video as well as write how you do it, it would be great.
PS: I have tried searching for kinds of guides or lessons in this; but since i do not know the name of this technique or what to search for specifically, i can't find any suitable ones.
I'm sure some of you know how to do this, so why not help? 8)
Anyways, cheers and have a freakin' ball!

Why are you pulling off the 12th fret 3rd string? According to that tab the entire passage is picked.

Alternate picking that would sound killer and smooth. Even legato on the B string and picking the G string would sound smooth as well.

I seem to have left out any other info about how that tab should be played.
The 12th fret on 3rd string is to be HO/PO'ed according to the numerous tabs I have with this similar pattern of notes being played.
Thing is that when I see videos of people doing it, they simply bar the two strings and it doesn't look like the 3rd string is ever being picked (although it obviously IS)
- All it looks like, though, is that the person doing it, is only hammering with his finger on, say, 15th fret.
I really don't know how else to put it, davie_gravy.
Right now I am going to take antipunx advise and look into it a bit more.
EDIT: Oh yeah; Methodlessman, the first few words are obviously for you. Sorry about that.

Lego my legato
Pedal point is a melodic device that became popular in the Baroque period. It is used extensively in the compositions of J.S.Bach and AntonioVivaldi, and is usually heard in compositions for violin, cello, flute and harpsichord.
Having said all that, it sounds great when played on the electric guitar! Some of the famous guitarists that have used pedal point in their solos and/or compositions are Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, John Sykes & Vinnie Moore!
Our first example is based on the early playing technique of Yngwie Malmsteen. This is a pedal point lick in the scale of A harmonic minor. Use your fourth (little) finger for the pedal tone on the 12th fret and strict alternate picking for the whole lick. In this example, the repeated pedal tone is the highest note of the lick.

The second lick is based on an idea by Vinnie Moore (Vicious Rumours, UFO), This is based on the A natural minor scale and moves across four different positions of the scale! In this example, the repeated pedal tones are the low note of each one of the positions played.

Here's another melodic idea, based on the A natural minor scale. This example is based on a concept by Texas guitarist Eric Johnson. This is a single high pedal with a lot of string crossing.

The logical progression of this melodic concept is to use more than one note as pedal tones. Let's examine a few more advanced licks, based on the playing of Vinnie Moore. The next lick uses notes of the A natural minor scale, played at the 12th fret of the guitar. In this case, we have three pedal notes, played on the second string, while there is only one melody note that changes throughout the phrase. The pedal tones are below the melody note. Use Alternate picking strictly.

This next lick keeps the same scale, playing position and even the same pedal tones! However, the melody notes change, moving below the pedal tones
Listen
Tab
Finally, let's expand the pedal point concept include even more notes! This time, seven out of the eight notes in each sequence are the pedal tones, with only the eighth high note changing every two beats! Again, this example is based on the A natural minor scale.

Listening Suggestions for Pedal Point
- Vinnie Moore "Time Odyssey" and "Mind's Eye"
- Yngwie Malmsteen "Rising Force"
- Jason Becker "Perpetual Burn"
- Richie Kotzen "Fever Dream"
