Session Guitarist
So ive been thinking, and im sick and tired of unreliable bands, and people. I wanted to do something with music just me and myself, not relying on other people. And i didnt want to just do solo albums. so i was thinking on becoming a session guitarist. Yes i know im only 16, but i think im fully capable of it. Ive been reading up, but i was wondering if any of you are a session guitarist, and if youve had any experience. Even if youre not and you know something about it, id love to hear about it! And if you maby just need a studio guitarist... **obvious plug**
Thanks!

Start practicing your ass off. And you can't be limited to just metal, you gotta do all styles.

Yes that, and simply make yourself known. Talk to people, make friends with the guys at the local music stores, and don't be afraid to show off with your skills if the moment seems right.
The trick is to make sure that bands and muscians, when thinking of picking up another guitarist, also comes to think of you.
Oh yes, one more thing... paticence.

You have to be able to play anything, you must read music perfectly , you must be able to do you spot ,perfect the first take , as time is money and no one will put up with you making mistakes at big bucks an hour at a recording studio.
You have to develop a solid reputation as a cracker jack player ,In that industry ,reputation is everything , no one will trust a newbie especially when it cost so much to do a recording.
Like some said hang out at the studios, get to know alot of people develop your sight reading and playing ability, Like I said you have to be able to play everything from hip hop to pop to jazz to blues, country etc.
Good luck.

You'll also have to invest time and money into a well produced, multi-style demo. As any big job wont just hire you on you or someone elses word especially if a label is involved.

thats something ive always wanted to do as well. I know im good enough. i can play any style of music quite well. I cant read music, but i can learn things by ear and eye quicker than most people can read sheets.
but yeah, its not easy to get your name out. you really have to have something unique about your playing to actually get noticed.

Start looking into music schools, get a teacher, learn how to read music. The ability to play classical music is a must, well perhaps not, but it would be of great benefit.

Take a look at the music we apparently like since we come here. If it is good, you can close to always find parallells to the classical music. So yea, it is a good place to start.

You need to be damn good to be a session guitarist. I'm going to be going to school for music, and one of the career oppourtunities for GRADUATES is being a session musician. You need to be able to site read music almost perfectly, have a tremendous knowledge of theory, and be able to play almost anything. If you can't do this, then unfortunately your career as a session musician will be incredibly limited.
