Opinions on Toxik
Band from NY that formed around 1986. If you are a fan of Watchtower and similar progressive thrash bands like that, you will like these guys too. The singer is all high and 80's sounding, which turns alot of people off, thats their biggest catch. The reason I listen to them is because of their guitarist, Josh Christian. Holy shit this guy can play. It's a crying shame he was never in a band that was mainstream enough to catch on, because he is damn good. Up there in technicality with Vitterli of Coroner, Skolnick, and Jarzombek of Watchtower. If you can put up with cheesball vocals (on the first album) and somewhat high singing (second album) it would be worth your while to find these albums. Has anyone here heard them before? Opinions?

Well I suppose everyone could just listen to 5 bands that qualify as most technical, fastest, most brutal etc. but I think that would get kinda bland.

I think they kick ass! Their riffage for 80's style thrash far exceeds the conventional. Great band! Not too hot on the singer though.

Being a thrasher from the 80's this band somehow slipped under my radar, but then I was poor and couldn't buy all the albums I wanted or check out half of the bands I read about(no internet then and very few free sample CD's)
The other thing was that towards the end of the 80's the thrash scene was being polluted by some really shite bands!
Thankfully Toxic don't fit that mould and Thrashing Mad was good enough to introduce me to the albums I should have bought 15 years ago!
Yes the singing is an aquired taste but that style of vocals was symbolic of thrash but the riffs are technical and the use of between song samples was ahead of it's time!

Heh that's all I can expect for the general metal population to say. I'm glad you gave the songwriting a chance Davie

You people need to listen to more Toxik. It'll put hair on your chest.
I think I mentioned this before, but both albums are getting re-released.
I don't know if anyone has tried to play through anything on Think This, but Josh briefly mentioned to me the tunings on the album (I think he was busy at the time and he never fully explained it). He said the leads are in standard, but the rhythm guitars are tuned as follows (low to high) :
D
A
D
F#
B
D
Does anyone have any experience with this?

Haha maybe, not to mention that a combination or technical and obscure doesn't make it terribly popular to tab either.

When is this going to happen? I really need to buy them? Please dont tell me they have already re-released them lol?
Also i think that both the singers where AMAZING but i did like Mike Sanders vocals better.

displeased records is supposed to reissue them but that whole deal seems kind of sketchy, particularly because they pushed the date back

I would seriously tab some Toxik, especially songs from 'Think This' if the vocals didn't bother me so much. Josh Christian is one of the best metal guitar players I have ever heard in the past 2 years. Incredible work on both albums, and good songwriting to boot [the only song I don't like is 'There Stood The Fence.'] But the vocals... arrggh!
That tuning Josh told you about, Steve, seems to be drop D, with the G string down half a step and the 5th, 4rth and 2nd strings left alone as normal. That is, if I read it right. As why he'd do it that way I have no idea, but it sure is awesome to get some 'inside info' on that.
