I never got far in Shadow of the Colossus, but I don't remember why. It was such a fucking awesome game.

Me and my friends have been in a Mortal Kombat kick lately. Played MKvsDC for a few weeks, but I got MK Trilogy to work on one of my friends PS3. That shit brings me back to the day!

How? My PSX disc for MKT won't work in the PS3. It used to work in the PS2 just fine, though I hadn't played it in a very long time.

The PSX and Saturn versions were waaaaaaay better. Graphics, gameplay, characters, everything.

Noob Saibot + Rain = easiest infinite combos in MK ever. I can't believe they left them in the game like that, it was soooo broken it wasn't even funny.

Yeah, I agree the PSX version is better but I've just always had it for N64 and never bought the PSX version.
Noob Saibot can suck my fucking ass. He is the cheapest character I have EVER seen in a game.

It should - PSX emulation generally works fine with the PS3.
autumncurve: Sweet, I'll add you. Although since we're thousands of miles away from each other the ping will be awful if we play together! CoD 4 or 5, btw? I'm not that great at CoD 4, but my K/D is nearing 2.00 on 5. Nearing 4th prestige there, only 1st on 4.

wow haha you must be good, i'm nearing 55 first run through, think my KDR is like 1.30 or somewhere near that anyway (that's in 5)
I've sold 4 as i played it so much i got bored of it, but now want it back so i may be on it later this month haha. 5 has better multiplayer i reckon though.
probs be on in a bit, breakfast time here

My friends PS3 can play PS1 games and his brothers PS3 can play PS2 games, but they can't do it the other way around. Comes in handy

It's a tough one. NTSC and PAL PS3's had different compatibility, there are many, many different models. Ones with the Emotion Engine run 90% of PS2 and PSX games regardless of the region.
I answer this question daily, I sell them for a living.

Nah I'm not that good, just run around with an MP40 with the round drum in CoD 5, spray and you're good. I constantly get matched up against a player that is 5th in the world in kills, 'cos he's an Australian too. My ratio is sorta hurt from that. ugh it sucks

Katamari has so many drug references. My gf's brother was over to visit and he said "all you do is roll?...that sounds fun". I'll probably be playing Katamari Damacy on my comedown from shrooms this weekend.
Fuck Star Ocean 3. It's the worst of the series. No, it's the worst Tri-Arc game aside from ToP on GBA.

Just finished it last night, it was tough haha. I actually enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than on the easier modes, you really have to keep your head down and pick your shots carefully.

Dewd. I used to play that game. I still have it installed. Wanna play sometime?
I haven't played in 6 months. Even when I logged on UT I never really clocked much time in it.

My brother plays UT. It looked like a game you'd play if you didn't have any CoD games, Team Fortress, CS, or Battlefield.

I bought Killzone 2 on Friday. Great game. My only complaint is the controls..I just played online for the first time and I was getting pwned. I can't seem to grasp the 'accurate' unresponsiveness to them.

i thought it was awesome until you fought your first alien thing, they just look and act hilarious and are pretty tame. still the ship and atmosphere are awesome, like a game of event horizon mixed with alien. the graphics are brilliant.
i just started lost and damned. so far so good.

So far it looks and plays very well. The gameplay is really solid for the tight 3rd person view it uses too. It has a pretty decent rating and so far it's standing up to it.

I sorta agree with both you & atumn. The enemies were both creepy and laughable in the demo that I played. However, I was definitely interested in how the 3rd person view would hold up (as I'm a super-fan of 1st person for games that require reflexes/fine movements).
The graphics were definitely nice to see, but I'm sure a true HD tv would be the only thing to give them justice.

@Req i found a decent website man if you want the know how.
http://www.raphnet.net/electronique...sis_cart_en.php
That is for the sega genesis, you use flash chips for it
Really cool shit you can rip roms from the pc onto the flash Emprom(the programmer for an EMPROM cost around 80 bucks man but well worth the cash). I wouldn't worry about getting an ultra violent eraser for it EMPROM's are cheap and just let it sit around with a game of your chose like you would a regular game. (Yes the only way to erase EMPROMS are ultra violent light)
That above man is for the sega master you use EMPROMS for it im going with design games for it first..
Also search the internet for some news about the Xbox360 playing playstation3 games...got word through the grape vine(i havent looked my self yet) that if you install a blue ray reader into your Xbox360 mod a little and wala you have a dual system at your disposal.

I've recently been reminiscing about a Playstation game (PSOne, that is) which I used to play with a moderate degree of enthusiasm, but I can't remember the bastard's name. It was a puzzle game in which you control a character in a 3D world and have to guide him vertically through a maze of moveable Tetris-like blocks. It's hard to describe, so here's an awesome MS Paint rendition:
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/3403/psgame.png
The blocks wouldn't descend like in Tetris, they'd instead "walk" down in a tumbling fashion, and you had to time it so that the little man would be able to slot himself in (ha) between or within the blocks, like Charlie Chaplin when he did that stunt where the house falls on him but the top floor window allows him to slip through unharmed.
Ring any bells with anyone?
Cheers dudes!

Just bought the first Yakuza game. Apparently it is one of Sega's latest 'unpolished gems' and it rocks. It's basically a Japanese GTA just take out those three letters. There aren't cars but they are both sandbox. Yakuza is just a fun beat 'em up with a good story and plenty of stuff to take you mind off the plot like in Shemune.

This isn't entirely relevant to console gaming, but it is...kinda.
My lil' bro and I installed Yellow Dog Linux 6.2 on our PS3, and pretty much everything has gone smoothly and seems to be working. However, Linux is incredibly confusing to newcomers and I can't figure out how to simply install shit. It seems like you need to memorise reams of commands in order to do the simplest of things. Any tips on the basics would be most welcome, although these tips would probably be better posted in another thread.
Anyway, the main problem we're having is getting Flash to work with Firefox. Because the PS3 uses a PPC processor Adobe Flash won't work with it, apparently because of legal issues or the like. There are alternatives, but I can't figure out how to get the bastards to work. Gnash (one of said alternatives) is installed, but it won't show up in the plugins for Firefox.
Has anyone else here installed Linux on their PS3 and gotten shit like this to work properly? I'm just about at the end of my fucking tether with it all. Yellow Dog is pretty well suited for the Playstation, but the same can't be said for the applications available to it.

Where do i even begin?...
I have no knowledge of Linux on the PS3 but what i can say is things like Flash Plugins can be a total bitch of a mess with it. For example i have Debian Linux(latest version) installed on a pretty nice gaming PC. I've installed the flash plugins to be able to view youtube vids. Ones i installed the flash plugin none of the videos run smoothly at all break up, pause for a few seconds, make the guy sound like a chipmunk, or freeze all together.
Ok on to the other note of getting flash to install on dog linux(if supported). There should be a packaging system located somewhere on the OS view through it and find FLASH Plugin or just go to a website where flash player will not load and download it through the link offered.(should automatically install).
I think this code should help you install flash within dog linux type this into terminal:
$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
I highly recommend going with Ubuntu Linux for your ps3, a lot of documentation for Ubuntu is around . The large community of users helps you find solutions to your problems easier, you rarely run up on a situation using Ubuntu where someone may go "You're the only one who has ever had this problem"...

Thanks for the reply mate, much appreciated!
We had Ubuntu installed first, but couldn't get the wireless networking to work correctly, and then I read that Yellow Dog is probably the most PS3-friendly Linux O/S around. The networking worked with YDL, so we stuck with it. All we really need it for is Firefox (certain websites wouldn't work correctly with the PS3's built-in browser).
I think I know what I need to do to get Flash working, but the website with the necessary files seems to be down haha, fucking typical. When the site is back up I'll test this shit out and report back. I'll also try the command you gave me and see what happens.
Cheers pr0az
EDIT: The command you gave me threw up an error, something about "[username] is not in sudoers directory" or something. Do I have to type anything before the command?

O shit bro:
Awesome, my networking is working and I am using WPA… yesssss! Now, just check a few things, email, reader, Facebook, cool. How about YouTube… wait… no flash. Check Adobe’s site.. no flash for PPC architecture.. WTF? So no flash at this point…which stinks..
Maybe its not supported? That came off a step by step website for using dog linux on ps3 so no flash is out at this time.
They dont have a flash plugin that supports the fucking awful architecture for the ps3..Will elaborate if you want on the awful architecture of it.

Gnash and swfdec are two open source alternatives to Flash which work on PPC architecture. Gnash comes pre-installed with YDL but I couldn't get the fucker to work with Firefox - it doesn't appear in the plugins list. However, I found instructions to get swfdec to work but the swfdec website isn't loading for me so I can't download the necessary files (I'm 99% sure swfdec isn't pre-installed with YDL).
Cheers for digging!

I spoke too soon - Flash-based advertisements work, but video players and games don't. I'm not sure how/why that's the case, but I'm pretty much done with it haha.
Even ignoring my PS3 woes, Flash is undoubtedly the worst thing to ever happen to the internet besides cyber-AIDS.
My little bro just got FIFA 2009 for the PS3. Not sure how the fuck they keep making these games every year. Besides changes in the team line-ups there's not much more that can be added to them. The graphics certainly don't look any different from those of the last 5 releases. I hate footy, but it's nonetheless quite fun having a casual game or two with my wee bro

I used to love this game when I was a kid, but I don't think I ever completed any of the sequels, the bosses were just too fuckin' hard for me even on the easy setting haha. I completed the first one, though. Two player with my wee bro became...unpleasant, rather quickly. I wouldn't last 2 seconds in an online match.

I rediscovered how amazing Super Smash Brothers Melee is. But I'm not sure that anything can beat the original, really. Both are awesome, and I use Ness... so I am awesome.

I finally found that game I mentioned in a previous post [ here]. It's called Intelligent Qube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3r6wXZ-QA8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_Qube
I had a hard time finding it because it was released under a Jap-sounding name over here (Kurushi) and as such I discounted all game names which sounded anything but Jappish when I was scanning my eyes over long lists of PSX games in the hopes that the name would jump out at me. Not an entirely stupid method of finding a game, because in my travels I found dozens of other games I used to play but couldn't remember the names of by using my patent pending Brain-Tickle™ system.
And that's the end of that chapter.

Yeah!! The nostalgia is fucking unbelievable sometimes. I think the first console we had was the Atari, and I remember playing Crystal Castles like a muthafucka, and I recently fired it up in an emulator (PM if you want it along with hundreds of games - it all comes to about 3MB! haha) and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I got vivid flashbacks of being a kid and thinking the Atari was as good as it was ever gonna get. Then we moved into the world of personal computers with the ZX Spectrum and then the Amiga (and I think our first Windows PC soon after that). Then we got the Master System, SNES, Mega Drive and Playstation. I lost interest in consoles after that but my little bro got the Playstation 2, and during my relationship breakup I ended up playing GTA: San Andreas on it for like 6 months solid, no joke. GTA saved my life! Fuck you Jack Thompson!
So yeah, I'm a PC gamer now, and I only play consoles when I want to have a two-player with my wee bro. My bro has accumulated pretty much every next-gen console over the past few years. Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and all of the hand-held consoles. He's a man who likes his games, that's for damn sure!

I agree that it was a major disappointment, and it doesn't even come close to the awesomeness that was San Andreas, but I still enjoyed it. I'd love to see a remake of San Andreas using the new engine, with the realistic physics and such. Valve did this with the original Half-life by transferring it onto the then-latest Source engine, and I reckon it worked pretty well. The expansiveness of San Andreas was one of the main things I missed from GTA IV. Not to mention the long list of promised features/details the devs decided to leave out without telling us.
The PC version's security is fucking ridiculous, so stick with the console one if you want to avoid migraines haha. You have to install the game (from 2 DVD9s) along with the Securom rootkit bullshit, let it check online for the release date, then install the Rockstar Social Club, then make an account with Games For Windows Live, then make an account with Rockstar Social Club, then let the game activate online which then subtracts one of your five available activations until you uninstall the game and let it go online to revoke the license you just used, then you have to login to GFWL every time you start the game otherwise you can't save your progress. Honestly, if you want to play this game you have to spend a good 10 or 15 minutes fucking around with shit before you even get to the main menu, and then you have to deal with the excruciating load times (although this is a problem the console version has, too). Ironically, all of these security measures are only present for legitimate gamers - the pirates never have to worry about any of this shit. I really wish I had just downloaded it, I'm not even sure what I gained by buying it other than lining the pockets of people who treat paying customers like cattle (I don't play online, so I don't even need a proper license).
That said, the PC version's headaches are sort of worth it (well...) when you consider the modding/hacking you can do with the game after you've exhausted the single player campaign. Consoles can do this to a certain degree, but nowhere near as much. I'm currently using a native trainer with the PC version which gives you literally hundreds of options/cheats (click here to see it) and I highly doubt the console version would allow for that.
GTA IV is definitely not worthy of the hype surrounding it. I mean, 10/10? Fuck me pink, I'd give it 6.5/10 at a push. It's alright, and definitely not the best of the series.

I love sandbox games. Maybe it didn't deserve a 10/10 across the charts, but I thought it was damn good.
I played Far Cry 2 recently and loved it. However, there was this buggy mission that ruined my file. I'm gonna start it up again and keep more than 2 saves in order to avoid that in the future.
Trials HD is an awesome physics game for Xbox Live Arcade... $12 purchase and worth it.
And now I am considering starting a file in Borderlands, which my roommate bought. It looks like plenty of fun. Has a Far Cry/Deus Ex/Fallout 3 sorta feel.

Sandbox games are my favourites, at least when it comes to violent/action games. Far Cry 2 was another over-hyped let-down, but if you don't expect too much it's a pretty OK game. I too suffered a few problems with savegames, such as not being able to get out of certain buildings after taking new missions, etc. Now I never overwrite previous saves! haha
FC2's game world felt barren and lifeless to me; the only interaction with other characters are at road blocks and ceasefire zones, and there are like 5 variations of the same handful of NPCs who respawn all over the map, and there's about 10 lines of dialogue they all bounce off of each other. It's a lazily designed, half-finished affair. The voice acting was shit, and the AI is as dumb as a bag of spanners. And the amount of time you spend driving...holy fucking hell. I wouldn't mind the driving so much if it weren't for the fact that your vehicle will burst into flames after gently knocking it a few times, leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere and having to walk for miles.
I played Borderlands for a few hours and got tired of it - it's just a sci-fi post-apocalyptic Far Cry 2, with the same problems as above.
Assassin's Creed is from the same team who made Far Cry 2 and I thought it was a fuckin' good game, and I'm looking forward to the sequel, although the PC version won't be out until early next year. Cunts. Still, Modern Warfare 2 is due out this week on all systems! That'll keep me busy in the meantime. My only gripe with AC is the endless, unskippable dialogue between missions. Fuck sake, I don't give a shit about the origins of the New World Order conspiracy, I just wanna knife people in the throat. Which is why I love Postal 2 - you can taser a woman until she falls to the ground and pisses herself, and then you can batter her head with a spiked baton, and then you can pour gasoline over her and set it alight with a match and watch her try to crawl to safety as you kick her in the back and piss on her. What other game offers such possibilities?? Grand Theft Auto seems like an after school special compared to this shit. Unfortunately I think it's a PC-only game, though (Postal III won't be!).

nah I played Postal II demo for macinstosh. That game made me feel wrong, Paddy! I prefer the less br00tal violence of GTA games.
@ Gomli: ESIV: Oblivion is quite possibly my favorite game ever. Yea, I'm pretty sure it is. I don't think anything has ever topped how MOTHERFUCKING obsessed I became with that game. Unfortunately, I did almost everything there was to do so I haven't played in a long time, but that took fucking forever and provided a nearly endless supply of fun!

Either that, or a PS3. Can't go wrong with a PS3, whereas you may burst into tears when paying for your 360 online account. The 360 actually isn't a bad deal, and you get to play the halo and fable games. The PS3 has metal gear and uncharted games. I'm sure there are more games limited to one or the other console, and there are technical factors that i wont get into(you can find many web pages on that) but I like the PS3 better.

If you get a 360 then we can shoot each other when Modern Warfare 2 comes out... and I know you'd love to shoot me.

PS3. I have both. Demon's souls is only out on PS3. And since you like crazy difficult Japanese shit, it's right up your alley.
