Charvel became Charvel/Jackson, who have been bought by Fender. I've got a Charvel, and it plays amazingly, better than the few Jacksons i've played.

same idea as gibson/epiphone or fender/squire
charvel used to be the bigger of the two and jackson was the 'lower' one, then jackson got more popular and became with bigger one while charvel became with 'lower' one but I think charvel makes better quility guitars nowadays then jackson does

Fender just owns jackson. They still let jackson do whatever the hell they want. And they still have most of the same guys working there that worked there in the "good ole days". If anybody says jackson sucks now because of the fender buy-out, they haven't spent much time with a USA jackson in thier hands.

Charvel still exists in it's own right. They are making guitars again with the old system of Model 1, 2, 3 etc etc.
Like Wayne guitars, Charvel started by simply modding Fender (and presumably other makes) to specifications of players, like EVH. Adding Floating tremolos, hot rodding them, etc etc, turning them into 'super strats'. Thats why Charvel's body and headstock shapes are usually very similar to the original Fender strat shape and not the harder edged design other companys create (like Ibanez's RG shape, for example).
A friend of mine owns one which he bought on Ebay from the lead guitarist in Jacobs Dream (dodgy christian power metal band from Ohio, on Metal blade). It was ok, but he ended up stripping the parts from it to put in his Ibanez!
There is nothing wrong with Jackson since Fender bought them out. In fact, one of the only things you'll notice since the buy-out is that the Jackson website is hosted on Fender's webspace....
