cheaters?

when any of you people figure out a song, do you cheat and slow the music down or do you listen to it at full speed and figure it out. when i do it, i listen at full speed and try and figure out wut scales/arpeggios theyre using then build off that.

I use to tab all my songs by just listening to it normally until I found out about transcribe and went back over my tabs to realise there was quite a few mistakes.
I wouldn't call slowing down the songs and taking away vocals cheating, it's almost impossible to ACCURATLY tab a technical death metal song by just listening to it at full speed. Some songs i've been listening to for years and decided to put them in transcribe and slow them down only to hear notes I had never even noticed before. You'd be suprised.

I wouldn`t really call any form of help for cheating, its not a contest ( well usually not). I don`t use vocal cut, slow down and other stuff that much, but I won`t hesitate to do so when I do need it. It`s about getting the tabs as accurate as possible, not to tab it " as natural as possible".

Go into windows media player < play < play speed < slow

It dosn`t always help that much though, it REALLY fucks up the sound. If its any help or not really depends on the production of the song.

Slow Tempo

Well, I do slow down the tempo sometimes to catch the solos... I don't think is cheating, is just a way to help you tab best and accurate. I also use the videos to see the notes in the solos...

I don't see it like a crime or cheating, slowing down the tempo... cheaters are people that tab doing copy and paste from tabs already done. Everybody has the right to submit a tab the way they hear it as long as is genuine work.

UP THE IRONS!!!

Only time Ive ever done this was with the Skin To Liquid outro solo in Phils tab, I slowed down the song in audacity, stretched it for about double the length and tabbed it to that. Of course theres a descent in pitch, so you then just raise everything up however many steps is necessary when youve got it all done.

This said it wasnt really helpful, not really with the tapping licks, where, the notes run together and when slowed down, mess things up.

Its by no means cheating though. If that were the case, everytime I slowed down an arpeggio in my head, id be cheating, too.

With transcribe, you can be mislead, because it shows you the harmonics of the notes that are being played, so you have to decide which are the harmonics and which are the actual notes (its not always obvious).

for instance:

-----
-----
-----
--2--
--2--
--0--

will have harmonics that appear to be

--7--
--5--
--4--
--2--
--2--
--0--

its still quite useful though, so is soundforge

I'll be downloading shortly...Which one do you think is more useful in tabbing out songs? When the song is slowed down in either program, do the pitches stay the same?

Are you talking about that key board thing down the bottom?. I haven't ever really tried using that. I just remove the vocals and then use my ears to work it out. If it's a fast song then i'll slow it down. I actually didn't even realise there was a feature that suggested chord names for you.

yea, the keyboard analyser at the bottom that tells you the 'strength' of the notes

Slowing tempo with Sound Forge

To slow down the tempo in Sound Forge, load an audio file, a mp3 per example. Then go to the 'Process' menu and choose the option called 'Time Stretch'. A window will open where you can configure various options to control the tempo.

That's it! Enjoy it!
Any question or comments, mail me. <maiden_nat@yahoo.com>

I've been trying to figure out how to slow stuff down, thanks naat. One more question: how do you isolate the guitar parts?

Sound Forge

Sorry to answer late, been busy with some stuff... well, I'm not sure if it works, but there are some options in Sound Forge when slowing the tempo where you specify 'Solo Instruments', sometimes the drums sound low and the guitars higher... check these options to have a higher volume of the guitars.

Also, I use that Time Stretch... but there's another option in the menu 'Special', called Edit Tempo... I'm not sure how to use it, maybe you should check that, too... I'm gonna check it...

See ya later.

Another alternative is to download the recording software "AUDACITY" and slow down the songs there. Open any song with audacity and change the bpm it's played at. I used it a while back but unnfortunately i couldn't hear the guitars too well over the vocals. Just tweek the EQ and see if you could make something work hope this helps

Cool Edit pro 2.0 is better for recording but for slowing stuff down and that audacity is way better it's not so difficult.

And i know before i said i never did cheat but now i do. But only on bit's which are really fast.

I listen to full speed for tabbing.
First i listen to a riff to get the main structure.
Then i take apart that riff note by note.
That means i listen to the first note and stop the player.
I search that note on my guitar and write it down.
Then i go forward with the next notes etc etc...
Most problems of course are the palm muted shit.
If you have some palm muted notes in between it's hard
to hear those notes exactly but with some practicising
it works ... mostly hehe.
