Changing Pickups
I have a now discontinued Washburn X-20 guitar with a H-S-S PU config. I want to get a more metal tone out of my guitar, so I am thinking about changing the bridge humbucker to either a EMG 81 or a DiMarzio X2N. I've checked the reviews for both of these at Harmony central and seem to be pretty good.
I play mostly death metal (Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, etc) and a little thrash and hard rock (Pantera, Slayer, AC/DC,etc). My guitar has a bolt on maple neck and a maple body, a non locking trem system and a rosewood fretboard. My guitar goes through a Dunlop CFH into a solid state Randall RH200SC.
Any suggestions about these PU would be appreciated, thanks.

k...why don't you just flip a quarter to decide...with the EMG 81 you will most likely have a more generic sound since a lot of people seem to use that...the other one i've never heard of...I use Seymour Duncan and I've loved them since I first installed one of their pickups...Just pick the one you want to have your guitar to sound the most like...

Except for Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, and Dying Fetus, an X2N is your best choice(not that the X2N can't do that, in fact in can very well, but those bands don't use it). The EMG-81 has no character but some people like that. I think you'll probably like the X2N more. I'm getting one to soup up my Jackson less I get a Duncan, and an EMG-81 for my Ironbird.

X2N is more natural sounding, compliments good guitar bodys.EMG make sterile, plastic sounding pickups(not that its a bad thing).Your guitar, though, would probally sound best with an EMG.

For the X2N, since by guitar body isn't "high quality" maple, it won't reach it's full potential?
For EMGs, how much would it cost to buy and have someone install it for me (I don't know much about changing pickups and have no previous exp.)?

The only bad about installing EMGs is that you know they are active ,Which means unless you get the HZs which IMHO suck, you need to have someone who knows what theyre doing install them because they operate on a 9 volt battery.
Me personally I would either go for the Dimarzio or even better IMHO Duncans
Which I use the JB/59 combo
cheers
