I now have a PODXT and I'm running it through a Carvin poweramp, and its the best setup I've ever had.

I've got a POD Pro, and its a good preamp into a cab (like John) or, as an FX unit in your amps loop. I'd suggest getting the XT series, because you can download upgrades and new patches for it, whereas the one i've got (PODXT wasn't released then), you can only download settings, but you've got to use the midi connection to do it.

For an extra 50$, you can get 18 more amp models, like a Powerball, 5150, Uberschall ... I'm going to get that upgrade soon.

And a PODXT is not complex to work at all. Seriously, there's only three knobs ( I'm talking about Amplifier Select/Tweak/Value knobs ) that you have to learn the functions of to get the results you need out of it. And I got mine new out of the box for 200$ from E-bay. Look at a POD 2.0 as well --- they have the 'bare essentials' as opposed to the XT, and cost substantially less over e-bay.

I'm going to have to recant everything I've said about cheap-high quality amplifier heads in the past, like the Crate Shockwave being a good product. From now on ---- I say that you can't beat a 200$ POD and a 250$ Peavey Classic 50/50 for about 500$ total. I think I'm definitely a rack person from here on out.

I picked up podxt live to go with my spider cabs and head. It gives me everything I need for live shows, even naked screaming groupies.

John, would you consider gigging with just your PODXT in a flight case, and just plug it into the PA? I've never gigged, so i couldn't say, but thats what i got my flight case for originally, until i got my Laney head.

Ever hear Meshuggah live? They go straight into a PA everytime they play. Then again, they play in venues with top-notch PA's.

There's a venue around here that bands like Into The Moat make stops at, that has no instrumental PA : Just two speakers for microphones and a stage. If you showed up with nothing but a POD, you'd be screwed. And on top of that, many small venues don't have the best PA's, meaning your sound is in their hands. If you run a poweramp/cabinet set up, at least you have control over your front-of-house sound.

Maybe one of these days I'll get one of those Bose PS-1 Cylindrical PA sets and make it my guitar rig. Who knows ...

And yes, I would have some kind of protective case for my POD.

I have the PodXT with the Metal & FX pack and it's definately a good buy, you can acheive a zillion tones with that thing. I really like the 5150, Engl Powerball and the MesaB TripleRect emulations they sound very nice.

I use the VTMPODxtProBundle.gpt presetpack who gives me a lot of metal tones.

I'm thinking of either a Laney or a 5150 for my next amp. If I get a 5150, I'd like to have a set up like In Flames, use the 5150 for dist. and the POD for cleans and effects, etc. Is there a way to be able to switch from the dist. channel of like the 5150, to directly to whatever is on the POD, through a footswitch of some sort?

I would say yes, they are both MIDI compatable. So you should be able to use a midi controller, plus whatever needs to be done on a 5150 for midi channel switching.Figure if In Flames and others use that setup live, there must be a way.

There's no reason for me to own anything else.

Tonight at practice, I could actually DROWN OUT my drummer if I wanted. I was more than loud enough, and I was'nt even clipping. I love this setup SO much. I was getting compliments on it all night.

John, what's your Carvin PA model? You run it thru what kind of cab?

Carvin HD1800 ( http://www.carvin.com/products/sing...=HD1800&CID=PWA ). I use a modified Genz Benz 2x12 that handles 800 watts, at 8 ohms, and an Avatar 4x10 at 8 ohms ( it sounds pretty good actually --- once I get a 4x12 I'll have exactly the sound I want ), for a grand total of at least 350 watts per channel ( or is it 700? I can't remember ... ).

Its PLENTY loud with just the 2x12, as I've said yesterday, I can actually drown out a drummer if I want, without clipping my amp. And the tone is superb, tight, focused, and CLEAR.

Incredibly quiet too, with the noisegate. Its perfect --- sounds better than any JSX, 5150, XXX ( I live in Louisiana so everything is all Peavey ), Marshall, anything else I've ever played.

ha, imagine how heavy a 1800w tube power section would be!! you'd need the help of like 5 people to move it.

Exactly ... this poweramp is already heavy enough to carry. Carvin says its 32 pounds but it feels more like 40.

ah rite, thats cool

i dont know much about gear and shit, so 1800 watts tube would seem viable to me

btw, john holland, if i upload my podxt amp settings file (patch), could you load it up on your pod and tell me what you think about it? i just need a second opinion of what i need to do to improve it.
i would be grateful if you could, i think we have simiilar pickups so the tone you get should be like the one i get. i have emg 81/89.

cheers

Actually, you don't need a second opinion! Never worry about what others think about your sound ... The thing is, I would'nt know how to improve it unless I were in the very room playing guitar. All I can tell you is to read the manual front and back. It might take 2-3 days to get the entire scheme of things with the PODXT, but its so expansive and feature laden that you simply must read the manual.

i'd assume so... that'd be totally retarded if they didn't offer that in the uk. just do a search for visa or mastercard gift cards.

Just wanted to bring this thread up to prevent making another one of the same subject. I'm gonna be getting a Line6 POD 2.0, it's more than good enough for what I need. Now you can use this thing to directly hook up to your PC to use for recording correct? Now does this connect via a USB, or regular cables, or what? And where is it suppossed to go into the PC, the line in?

I don't know if the POD 2.0 has USB but you could just go like this POD Output -> Cable -> Microfone/Line In. Whatever works but just watch the output from the POD or the sound will distort.

I have the Pod XT right now and I'd like to get at least the metal pack.

No USB, just stereo line out. You can hook up midi and use a PC program to modify the POD sounds however. There are all sorts of presets you can download and plug in via midi, pretty cool!

I use a 2.0 for now

Id recommend an XT but if you have decided on 2.0, fair enough, theyre good enough for sure. Ive got a pretty nice tone through it.

You need to get a jack converter, from whatever musical jacks are (cant remember...) to 3.5mm, and then run a 3.5mm jump cable from that output, to your PC soundcard line in. Really easy.

My sound card is shit though. So, I get a lot of crackles etc, but its easy to clean up in CE 2.0. But yeah, its not USB, but that set up will work fine for recording etc.

Let us know how you get on with that! Also, thanks for the bump, it was useful for me as im looking at the poweramp that john linked to

Yeah so I just picked up the 2.0 one. So far it's great and I'm having fun with it. What programs do you guys use to record? I'm having trouble adjusting the output level/vol. for it, because if I turn it up loud enough to hear myself playing, it's waay too loud for the recording, so I'm having issues adjusting the volume level.

EDIT: Some more questions, is it not very good to put like reg. computer speakers to the headphone input to have the sound come out that way? Also, if you're playing with like headphones, putting it like guitar-->Wah-->pod, would that be alright to do?
