I know what a third is, but is there a name for the shape some people call the "reverse power chord"?... If you don't know what i'm talking think about every In Flames song you've ever heard, and a lot of Kataklysm...

A reverse power chord would just be a third, yeah. A minor one.

Look up the roots to the chord your talking about and you'll get the chord name. It has a root and a minor 3 so it is a minor chord. If you move the third down one half step you get a major 3 which is also used quite a lot by infames. So it becomes a major 3 chord.

Yea it's pretty ambiguous esp to powersofterror to say a 'reversed power chord' esp in the theory forum and not be expecting the answer he replied. The poster should have made some mention to a 'reversed power chord' shape and not the actual chord to be completely clear of his point, but no ones perfect. I kept telling him "dude, if they have a name for a third then the other shape has to have a name too, douche"... It's not called "a fifth," because the power chord it is actually considered a chord in theory. The fifth is the dominant note of the root, so with distortion and played together, there wasn't much need for the third (to make a triad) because it sounded good.

The third is a different story. The third is what gives a chord it's color--major or minor; so when you play a third instead of a power chord--root/fifth--you get an incomplete triad because it excluded the fifth.

I was thinking that too until I read the reverse part.

To be honest, when I read that, I was thinking of this...
