I pretty much use D'Addarios exculsively now. I've got my PRS set up with 10's to standard tuning to where if I drop D, I won't have any problem. I've got 11's on my drop C, but it's a Floyd and is set up that way. I use XL120's on pretty much everything else that is in standard tuning. It just works for me.
Basically, use any strings you want, but set it up properly for those strings. And when changing strings, use those same strings (unless you feel like setting it up again).
There is no rule of thumb when it comes to strings gauges vs. tunings. It's all about the set-up. Just adjust your trem angle and truss rod, and you'll be fine. Use anything you want, but take the time to make sure the trem angle is right and the neck has the relief you want, then intonate it, and you will be a happy camper. If you take the proper steps, you will end up with a guitar that will be pleasing to play. It takes a little time, but it is well worth it!
