Understanding Cabs
I already have a head, and am trying to find a decent cab. But, IMO to find a decent cab, I have to understand how they work, etc.
So...a couple of questions:
-when the head is plugged in, are all of the 4 speakers in the cab used and is it possible to switch certain ones on and off?
-are there sound differences b/w a slanted/angled cab and a straight cab, or is it just for looks?
-when connecting the head and cabs are the ohms suppose to match (4 ohm to 4 ohm, etc) and what would happen if they don't?
-to avoid blowing speakers, what should I do?
Thanks for any answers and helpful info.

- All 4 speakers will be working. You can only use 3 speakers by pulling some cables
- straight cabs project the sound straight forward wich will make it more bassy. slant cabs also push air upwards wich will make a slightly different sound
- Yes the ohms are supposed to match to get full power out of them
- don't use a 100 watt cab with 200 watt amp for example. Make sure your cab is more powerful than your amp.

if the ohms dont match you will either blow your power amp or blow your speakers. most likely your power amp.

Keeping on the subject, I was wondering if anybody had any knowledge on cab construction. Specifically, what woods are good, how the number of wood-plys effect the sound, how the front screen/grill effects sound, etc. etc.

But if i buy a head that comes with a cabinet like the picture i've sent, i won't have to worry right? I'm saving up to one of those and just want to know so i don't waste my money.

Then i will expand.
A mismatch in ohms between two power sources causes surges in the electrical patterns. Translated into amplifiers, this can be a bad thing. If a 16 Ohm head feeds into a 4 ohm cabinet, power will be bounced back to the head. In the case of solid state amps, this usually isnt a problem. However, in tube amps, the power tubes can be fried. In extreme situations, the power amp itself can be entirely blown, but it is uncommon.
In the case that a 4 ohm head feeds into a 16 ohm cabinet, the resistance of the power supplied is less than the expected resistance of the recieving device. This lower resistance will result in excess power flooding through the recieving device... in the case of a cabinet, the speaker can be fed too much amperage and blown, despite their capability to withstand high wattage.
All of these case take extended use fo mismatched resistance... but it is always much more safe to just match the resistance and not be a fucktard.
