They came to Iceland for a couple of shows earlier this month. It was great for me because I missed them last time they were here. They've gotta have the best frontman ever, he came on stage with a horn full of beer and he got us singing an Icelandic folk song. Good times!

To your first question, yes. Then on ur second comment, they did. I can bet you that you'll probably be able to meet him after the show, he was hanging out on the merch booth there.
EDIT: Oh wait, I thought you meant if they're doing this on this tour, I'm not sure if he's out there while COB is playing, but you'll probably see him after the show.

I agree, but they're definately not bad at all to watch live. Plenty of raw energy and shit. About the only song I really know from them is "Pursuit of Vikings", but they played awesome, they all did the synchronized-windmill-headbang just like I expected.

Yeah, AA aint the greatest in the world or anything but they're damn good party and live music. Especially with a front man like that! I was headbanging the whole couple of nights.

For the sake of replying to a AA chat, might be worth your time to learn his name, but to save you some time, its Johann, Johann Hegg

I don't care what lovely people they are... how often can one band release the same album?? Verdit: Moderately interesting middle-tier band people spooge over too much.

When you have to spend hours of critical attention to an album to simply find any difference is dosen't note evolution. I'm not very big on them either. Saw them life at the Art of Noise tour and their preformance was a bit..ostentatious.

the differences arent hidden and you dont have to spend hours studying them. its fine that you two dont like AA , but its not that you insist they didnt evolve. they did, and they probably will continue to. song structure, lyrical structure, melody, recording methods, speed, all changes drastically from album to album

"Actually everything is on one level, no song fails but no one really stands out either. It does have become a solid, very good disc.... It will hardly bother the fans because the band has stayed true to themselves after all. But lets be honest, didnt we all expect a thorough improvement secretly."
Lords of Metal:
"However, when comparing "Fate Of Norns" with their latest release "Versus The World", it is hard to decide which one of the two is better and it is hard to tell what the real differences are (apart from other songs of course). Amon Amarth embroiders once again on their success formula, but without repeating themselves. Hell, I don't blame them."
Some dude from Metal-archives:
"Every song on here makes me think of how bands like Carcass and At the Gates did slick, well-produced melodic death metal so much better over a decade ago. The music on here is standard, mid-paced Gothenburg "death" metal with no surprises, and dispite my general dislike of the genre, I liked what I heard coming from Amon Amarth."
COC:
"The album itself is one of those predictable affairs if you already know the band; an album that that will neither seriously disappoint existing fans nor win any former disbelievers over. "
Finding those took about 20 seconds, and you can do it from all the other albums too, probably from The Avenger onwards. It's steamingly obvious - these guys play 'in their sound' over and over and over again. I'm not going traipsing through hours of uninspired music looking for the modulation of a couple of D#'s at the 2.10 minute mark. Massive evolution bollocks. They should call their next album "More Viking Shit with Flames on the Cover", because that's exactly what it will be unless they discover veganism and pottery.
The interesting thing is this - all of the above reviews are positive. Most of them are 8/10 or thereabouts. Which is pretty much correct... this is well-played, well-executed solid music. However, solid can go grude-fuck itself. I want music to challenge me, I'm not going on a scavenger hunt for maturity through the Tracks of the Bloody Necroyeti.

I know its fine that I don't like them and its also acceptable that I objectively insist that the haven't evolved. They really haven't! The lyrical concept certainly hasn't evolved, structure hasn't, the melodies follow the same writhing process, their recording methods have certainly not changed (what their budget hasn't allowed them to do in the past dosen't count), etc. Jim's review quotes are a perfect example. You could compare the same situation to bands like Opeth (with the exception of Damnation) and Dying Fetus - all the albums are good and well done, but are sadly redundant. The lyrics may differentiate in a few isolated songs, some tracks may have different speed and time signatures along with length, but its relatively the exact same thing as the last albums (which also do the same thing in trying to be different but within their writing style). Most bands are afraid to leave their winning writing method derelict and try new things. Thats fine too. Well, not really - but its understandable.

did you really want to take french? most people dont learn and or remember shit from their highschool class cause they didnt really want to learn it in the first place. for me at least I have always been fascinated with language and jelouse of people that could speak more then one. so I teach myself. but to be fair norwegian/swedish/danish is so close that if your learning one you can pretty much get what the other two are saying

yeah because im interested in the language, i retain it real fast. i just teach it to myself for fun, and teaching consists pretty much of tlaking out loud/over msn with danish people who make fun of me because i suck at it so bad
at the darko/fbs, im not gonna quote you guys and dissect each piece and defend my point of view, way too time consuming however i do appreciate the time you guys took in your posts. reviews are reviews, but certainly arent substituable hearing the albums yourself! the one review that said aa havent changed was way off, as theres a big change between versus and fate of norns!
how i feel AA have changed
melodically- the songs are harmonized at different intervals, riffs are different, simpler, less tremolo picking now compared to the older stuff.
structurally- the riffs have taken a backseat to johanns voice/lyrics and what once was just riff based music is now more ...hrm, song based?
recording methods-they used to layer upon layer guitar tracks, the standard of at least 10 guitar tracks was on all of their albums the latest. there was an absolutely noticeable approach to the recording process on the Fate of Norns which for the most part is simply two guitar tracks! bass and drums. thats a very noticeable change in production which was not the result of a poor budget (im assuming they have more money now than they did before..)
instrumentally- johanns voice has lowered and deepend ,as is typical. the drums arent NEARLY as fast now. guitars changed as stated.
lyrically - the older songs werent about viking myth and stories as much as the new ones are. the lyrics are all either stories from the point of view of a viking or actual reworkings of folk tales, compared to a song like "metal wrath" from the older albums
from album to album, itd be a hell of a lot harder to pinpoint evolution but put on once sent from a golden hall, versus the world, and then the fate of norns. Very, very very different styles

Those are all subtle changes within their usually writing. Although those points could be countered, I don't hate/care this band enough to put effort into it. Also, they probably layered 10 guitar tracks (which seems like a slight exaggeration because that would most probably sound like shit) because they couldn't get the heavy tone they wanted, which of now they can, and don't have to go to such lengths. Its okay for a band you adore to have mediocricies about them and to admit it.

hey yeah
no its not an exaggeration, the guitar tone on the avenger/crusher albums is really muddy and indistinguishable. on a side note most albums have at least that many guitar tracks, eq'ed differently and turned way down in the mix
im not going to say amon amarth are mediocre, no way! but i dont care much for the early albums. its the last two that i love

Brundköggul. I just made up that word right there.. it sound rather funny in icelandic and it could catch on as a new insult. Anyway.. it's like a stain of cum. Just not really a stain... think of dried up sperm.
Another good one is 'forhúđarostur'.. the cheese of the penis! (smegma)

Ok I got a question about them, what kind of guitars do they use? Do they use 7-strings, or do they just downtune?

Coincidentally, I was listening to Amon Amarth for quite a long time.
