At first it smelled pretty commercial to me (like all the other post-Brave Murder Day Katatonia stuff did) but it's grown on me and I'm singing along now. Still one of my favourite bands.

Yea, because Sounds of Decay, Saw You Drown, Discouraged Ones, and Tonight's Decision are all the traces of a commercial band

I'll give you Discouraged Ones although it's obviously the turning point towards what Katatonia is now. But Sounds of Decay and Saw you Drown can't possibly count as they're both EP's! And if you're mentioning Tonight's Decision there why don't you just say Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness too?

EPs can be a great thing. Nevermore's "In Memory" was a very necessary EP, I think. Age of Silence just recently released one to "give the fans something to think about while we develop our second album". Don't discount EPs.

To tell the truth, I don't really think their sound is "commercial" at all. But I can see as to why you'd think so. I mean, Viva Emptiness obviously isn't anything like Dance of December Souls.
I like the deep red color of the coverart, but the actual image isn't anything too special. The promo pic would make a better cover than the actual artwork

Yeah, but I was talking about in the sense of looking at their discography overall. Saw You Drown would be part of Discaouraged ones and so on.. I really don't feel like discussing this further.
I like the cover-art very much, great color and a nice little image. Nothing too distracting from the actual music inside.

Sounds as if the new CD will sound the same as "Viva emptiness"...I was hoping that they would find back to their really doom days (brave murder day etc. ), but well...still I like "Discouraged Ones" the most.
I will buy the new CD, no matter how shitty it is.

Well stop hoping! They're never gonna go back to those days. Jonas can't do those kind of vocals anymore, and no one else in the band wants to do a doom record. Just wait for yet another Nystrom side project

Katatonia still is doom.
And I think that he still can do such vocals, he just doesnt want to.
Well, I like October Tide pretty much...there are a few bands which sound like old Katatonia...still not the same. :/

Nope, he messed up his vocal chords, and he said doing even 3 songs live is pushing it because it starts to hurt.
EDIT: 3 heavy songs with "grim vokillz"*

hahahaha! commercial... have you listened to the radio recently you fool!? enough said...
i have a leaked copy of the album aswell. very bloody cool, i will make sure to purchase it without the voice overs when it comes out and for the quality. I think this is their best album to date. There are a few excellent tracks on there, but all are nicely evil in their own right
I like Deliberation at the moment (it changes every hour though... like a kid in a candy store). July is also cool (too bad July is the fucking winter here...)

They wrote that song just FOR the southern hemisphere man. July is the middle of the unholy, blasphemous, frostbitten winter down there and Katatonia being gloomy, hopeless, bearers of infinite pagan grimness...it all adds up.
