it's popular because it was the first mass produced 4x12' that was just by most rock bands back in the day. And it sounds great too, even these days I prefer my 1960B to an Engl 4x12 with v30's or v60's. I've heard them next to each other through my powerball and a blackmore, the engl cab just sounds less lively. Deep but it just doesn't quite cut it IMO.
They're also good value for money, there's heaps around used because there's just so damn many of them around. Guess that's why they're a populair choice for guitarist too, they're easily available used, for good prices.
