Use a good mic, a mic preamp, a compressor, a lot of gain from the mic preamp, use more gain than volume. If you use more volume than gain your voice will sound really small. Also if you want to make it even bigger use effects with it.

Ya know, a lot of people think they're the best vocalist, yet after they record themselves singing, they're more than surprised.

I agree with powersofterror, but if the situation is what you really say it is, then.. the problems not equiptment (therefore has nothing to do with 'going straight into a mixer'), it's you.
Are you warmed up in the studio?
Drinking enough water? Hydrated and energetic enough?
If you can pull off 'amazing stuff' live, then by all means, you should be able to do even better in the studio. There's no such thing as being able to sing live, but not in the studio (at all).
This doesn't have anything to do with using fancy equiptment; don't try to mask a bad voice with good equiptment. That's my 2 cents.

just make sure you are confident and not over extending your vocals. I know when I recorded vocals for the first time it was a bit wierd without the handheld mic. It's hard to give it all just standing with headphones and a compressor mic infront of you.

Ok man, practice your vocals before recording and get your voice prepped (Screaming to Cannibal Corpse song They Deserve to Die is my workout). Then just get the blood flowing man, get pumped up! Nervousness will screw you over, when I'm nervous I suck but with that adrenaline you can scare the shit out of someone.

Recording Screaming
hey, man
i had the same problem...it's because of a lack of adrenaline....what you need to do is when recording, turn the music up super super loud and hold the headphones tight. go on youtube.com and type in melissa cross + bad moniters, it explains some of the stuff...good luck dude!

Yeah man. I got the same problem. For some reason I'm timid because I have complete silence around me. I know this sounds absurd but get angry. Just imagine the one person in your life you would love to just scream and growl at face to face. Usually I just stare at somebody right in the eyes in the room and just focus that energy. I dunno. Works for me.
