Album That Revolutionized Metal
I'm not sure where this thread goes so I'll try here. What album do you think revolutionized metal/rock today? I think personally either R.I.P [Megadeth] or Master of Puppets [Metallica].

This sounds crazy (especially comming from me), but it's Black Sabbath's Debut. I'm not one to credit old ass bands, but this is fucking heavy before there was heavy.

aside from the ones mentioned:
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back To Life (just how many bands copied their style?)
edit: also, Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick (for kickstarting the entire "technical death metal" scene)

I agree, Slayer...
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Anthrax - Among The Living
Tallica - kill 'em all / mop
Morbid Angel - altars of madness
Obituary - slowly we rot
all pretty old and all of them had quite an influence on various subgenre's of metal.

Yeah for Morbid Angel, those are the earliest blastbeats I can think of. If anyone knows for a fact, when WERE the first real blastbeats?

Good question Probably Napalm Death, but Morbid Angel was probably the first band I really recall using them to any effect. Sorry forgot to add Morbid Angel to my list, probably Blessed or Altars

Mick Harris - Napalm Death. He coined the term "blast beat" to describe his style of drumming way back when, he also coined the term "grindcore".
SOD are also one of the very first bands to use it.

theres no real revoltionary DEATH metal album because the whole scene spawned and everyone started putting out full lengths around the same time. all the death metal bands started rehearsing and making demos around 86 and by 87 there were a bunch of death metal albums from mantas and pestilence and suffocation

I read on Wikipedia that the first blastbeat was used in a SOD song called milk, but if you know a jazz drummer who did it then it was probably first, but Milk may be the first song in metal with blast beats atleast
EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blastbeat this is the wikipedia page if anyone is interested

First it was Black Sabbath then Metallica's and Megadeth's firsts, then Napalm and Morbid Angel brought it to a more extreme level. Thats what I think...

Early Carcass did more than early Napalm Death, my opinion anyway.

I believe it was actually DRI in the early eighties. Can't remember the song though.

Ok, the wikipedia.org is wrong. LARM is the first band to do blast beats (yet never credited), just read choosing death.

im telling you guys, jay mascus of deep wound threw down the first blasts, this is the same dude who later on formed dinosaur jr, siege were another western mass band that were more influental and known as the fastest hardcore band of thier time which was around 82, napalm death themselves listened to these bands and admit being influenced by thier sound. mick<or is it mitch> harris just termed "blastbeats" and napalm had more of a wide spread appeal and brought this sound to alot more people, also they were alot more brutal sounding than these early grind bands. its all kind of semantical because all this happened within a short amount of time, within 5 or so years.

Napalm Death did more for grind than Carcass did, if it wasn't for ND, Carass grind-era wouldn't exist imo.

You're not wrong entirely, but I'm telling you it was LARM. Deep Wound kicks ass by the way along with the entire early Earache roster.

i just read that wikipedia page, and they specify the double bass with the blast. i didnt think about this earlier, all the bands i mentioned were using single kick. so yeah carcass, napalm etc along with doing blasts, utilized the double kick advancing the technique

I thought we were talking about albums that have been a huge influence on the genre and there's been numerous in death metal, although you are correct about how it started out.

how about band that revolutionised metal?
how about bands that DIDNT?
when you think about it, most bands have something to do with what metal has become, Dave mustaine was inspired by Cat Stevens, Sabbath by Zep, eventually, you go way back to the Beatles and Elvis, and say "they inspired Suffo and Cryptopsy and.,.." sounds crazy, but its true, so these threads i find are pointless

I don't think there was a single album that did so much (I don't think there can be). I think it was a slow progression.

Its not influental on the genre of metal as a whole, but Blood,Fire,Death by the late great BATHORY, still stands as Probably the best norse black metal album of all time, and up there with the best albums of all time period, and with the blast beat thing, I dont find blast beats to be the best thing that ever happened to metal in the first place, but thats just my opinon on that subject

when you think about it, black sabbath didnt revolutionize metal at all. my reason behind this is because they were the first metal ever (too make it big at least) and they couldnt revolutionize metal because metal didnt exist back them, it was just black sabbath. Sabbath started metal yes, but they didnt change the metal scene because there wasnt a metal scene to change.

um...if I'm bit mistaken, wasnt Jethro Tull the first to coin the term Heavy metal?

I think it's originated from the lyrics in 'Born to Wild'. Something like "Rolling down the highway / heavy metal thunder".. don't remember exactly and I don't have time to google it, going to take an essay in 30mins.

Pete Sandoval said in an interview that he invented the blast beat.

Sandoval's probably convinced he did invent it. Based on the way that dozens of people seem to claim to have invented the blast beat, it's probably likely that a lot of people who were working independently towards the same ends intuited the same means. In other words, it doesn't matter. The implementation of an idea is always more interesting and important than its origin if it's at all worthwhile. A good example is the fact that the more thorough histories of the blast beat are obliged to include the fact that it was a technique developed by old jazz drummers like Buddy Rich, a fact which has no bearing whatsoever on its use in extreme metal and is of little but 'well I'll be' interesting to most metalheads. So let's all calm down.
I'm not answering this until we get a clear idea of what's meant by 'revolutionized.' Peoples' answers point to all sorts of diverging theories.

I agree with you on that album.
I think a revolutionary album is one that brings something new to the table, and takes metal in a new direction.

Even Metallica admit to being influenced by Venom and some of the hardcore bands present at the time.
Also some theorize that before Black Sabbath "invented" heavy metal a band called Blue Cheer headed in that direction before BS. In the end I agree with PST on the idea that many people were doing the same things at the same time. Now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon saying "Fuck you I started that a long time ago!"

ok no need to be cocky now I really meant you were rad for saying focus, even though Pieces of time was really influential if you are going to mention focus. Even though I like Cynic more than Atheist.

Perhaps I'm thinking crazy, but "Dead Kennedy's - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" (Influencing Slayer!) and "Black Flag's - Damaged" (yeah I know Rollins sucks, but this is the album everyone remembers) influenced bands to play an entirely new form of metal....punk-metal. This is also known as Thrash, I don't know if anyone's ever heard of it or not .
