Pain of Salvation
Truely shocking. Not a single thread on here about, perhaps, the greatest progressive metal band ever (I'm sure a few will agree). I meant to post a thread about them a while ago, but never got round to it.
When I started listening to Opeth, about 3-4 years ago, I (quite stupidly and hastily) didn't believe there would ever be a band as good as them, let alone surpass them. About 18 months ago I bought myself Entropia, and "blown away" would be an understatement. I instantly thought "who the hell is this singer?", but I listened to the album about 4 or 5 times the whole way through before peeling my ears away to read more into this fantastic band. Tracks like Winning a War, People Passing By, Oblivion Ocean, and Leaving Entropia showed me that not only were PoS much more inventive than your ordinary prog. metal band, but that Daniel Gildenlow (I can't do the bloody dots over letters) had a creativity in his powerful melodic voice that would even beat the likes of Halford.
Like a few do, I like to buy a band's discography in order, so I picked up One Hour by the Concrete Lake about a week or 2 later, and it was even better than Entropia! I don't normally list my favourite bands in order, except when they were THIS good, and OHBTCL earned them the spot behind Opeth as my second favourite band.
The Perfect Element Pt. I... probably the greatest album ever created. Unforgettable tunes, truely inspiring writing, perfect blends of heavy and calm, and Daniel's finest vocals to date. Look for the special edition, the extra tracks don't seem at all "extra", with Beyond the Mirror and Timeweaver's Tale being better than some of the gem's on the original disc.
Remedy Lane - depending on my mood, it can rival The Perfect Element as my favourite PoS album. Alot more personal in it's concept than any other album, which makes it all the more sad and haunting.
12_5 - greatest live album ever? The way they've reinvented every song in a way that is fresh & new yet clearly recognisable has never been done so well.
Be - a work of genius. With Gildenlow's writing skills being this utterly fantastic, The Perfect Element Pt II seems like it's going to be even better than the first.
Even though the vocals always seem to dominate in every song, which certainly isn't a bad thing, each member is surprisingly strong on their instruments. Kristoffer Gildenlow's bass is very strong, showing a lot of influence from bands like Yes and Rush; Hermansson's keyboards are used at all the right times, with some beautiful melodies thrown in here and there (he especially shines on 12_5); Langell's drums aren't as fast as some like, but that is made up by the complicated and creative beats; Hallgren's soloing style is extremely unique, and he can play bloody fast aswell; finally Dan Gildenlow, whose riffs and solos are extremely (erk I can't think of another descriptive word) creative.
Discuss!

they're very good and talented but the "metal" bit on "progressive metal" is quickly vanishing with each new release.

Yeah, I'll get right on that for you.
I disagree with the Be as a masterpiece comment. It's decent, and very different, but is only really saved by a few songs.

There is no rapping. There are a couple of parts that are more like recitations than singing, but no fucking rap.

Even if it was rap, Used is the best album introduction to any album of any band. I love the "rap".

Pain of Salvation like all styles of music, even rap. So it's possible it was a rap, now go hate them.
