poem about my old dog
" My Friend, My Old Dog "
Fog creeps into your veins
Challenging breath and weighing heavily
Lumbaring limbs that once bounded
Are grounded and stiffened
You take it in stride and do what you can
Circling round one room to the next
Confusion and blankness at times
Obstacles no longer avoidable
Wake from sleep and gaze at my face
Eye to eye, we try to see some hope
Thought to thought we share
Incapable of seeing if there's a tomorrow
How can one look deep into those eyes
And not realize what a bond there is there
Without words, only gestures
Only touch and tone
Nose to the wind
Scent faintly noticed
Rabbits finally safe even though they run
Tail dragging, no indication of presence
No bark, no trot, no treed squirrel
Day after day
Greyer in the muzzle
Love still lingers in those brown eyes

We thought she was a goner twice tonight til she got up and started one of her routines. She's only got about a month left the vet said because she has a rapid growing tumor on her kidney, but tonight was a painful forerunner to what's to come. I'm just glad it wasn't today. I'm sad she's going to go, but glad she didn't yet.
Thanks for the comment, too. I'm exhausted so please excuse me.

Sorry, that really sucks. I have a dog and I love him to death. It would be hard as hell on me if he died anytime soon (he's only 4). And as far as the poem, I thought it was good.

Thanks. 4 is not too old. Hope you have a great time with yours. This one has been excellent. I'll miss her a lot when she goes.

That's one of the curses of being a creature with a life expectancy of over sixty years, I suppose. I know what it's like, been through it a couple of times. But I reckon, that if they inspire to pieces of this kind then it was all worth it.

Yeah, I've got a cockatiel, too and it's about 10 now. They live about 30 years total. We've had a lot of pets but we've had this dog the longest.
