Troubled Musician
Góðann Dag
I've been playing seriously for a year now, and have had a 15w Marshall MG since I started. Since the MG series i've tried is a violation of basic human rights(IMO) i'm looking for a cheap/medium($500-$700 maybe?) priced amplifier for my awesome ESP Horizon. I stumbled upon Peavey's Transtube EFX 212, which gets raving reviews at Harmony-Central, and cost less than nothing for the value i am told.
Now, I could well imagine getting the Peavey but I don't have too much knowledge of amps to really "compare", other than sonic quality.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Blue voodoo and schockwave of course Or a used peavey 5150. Peavey bandits are pretty decent.

Don't forget the Peavey XXX and the JSX. They run around $1000 and more. I have a Peavey Stereo Chorus SS 120w. It has great sound and clarity. Of course a tube amp will pull better tones, but they cost more too.

Yeah, thanks a lot. I'll check out some used 5150's or Blue Voodoo's.
What about the Marshall AVT's? Since a company called ShopUSA started here in Iceland, all amplifiers have gone down in price and the AVT275 seems ok, but i'm concerned about the poor reliability ratings i've seen around.

at least you are aware that the MG series is garbage. You're worlds ahead of a lot of people.
I dont have much to add, so ill tell you what to stay away from
- Anything Marshall that isnt all tube.
- lower level crate. Dont buy anything that isnt a BV or Shockwave, basically.
- BEHRINGER
- BEHRINGER
- solid state Peavey. Don't touch it.
- Ibanez.... ew.
- Line 6

the jmp-1 isnt "all tube" and it's imo one of the best preamps ever. the marshall valvestate poweramps don't suck either.
the old school crate stuff like my old g1600 xl wasnt too bad, or the gx130c's(jack owens from cannibal corpse used them for a long time).
line 6, the vetta, hd147, and alot of the pod stuff isnt to bad, it's those damn spiders and spider II's.

Thanks for the "Stay-away-from" list Rapture
Maybe i'll just get the AVT275, I will have a shitload of cash coming in late next year and then i'll maybe go for an ENGL, Diezel or something like that. If I don't find a well priced Crate or Peavey on eBay i'll just take the AVT for now.
Thanks alot for the feedback everybody!

Agreed. I didnt mention the jmp because i didnt figure he was going rack, and i didnt mention upper level line 6 because i knew he wasnt spending that much.
I wasnt aware of the prowess of older Crate stuff. You've intrigued me.

They are way over-priced,they would be decent if they were half the price.

i just like the amps i think sound good. and well, having played the spiders and spider II's... just not my bag...
but then again you have to consider what kinds of amps i am into... much more expensive high end stuff. i would never even expect tones close to that from a cheap entry level line 6.
to a beginner diming the gain, bumping up the highs and mids and chugging in drop D all day. a spider II will blow your socks off.
