RING????
Just wanted to ask:
what is that long ring kinda thing that guitarists wear in the fingers called and what is it used for (my guess to make pressing many strings together eaiser)
and also i would like some expert advice (and on metal tabs u dont have any scarcity of that) :
i have a
yamaha beginner guitar (eg112) kinda similar to yamaha pacifica i guess
an ibanez pedal (sm7)
a beginner amp (yamaha 10w)
and other samll things like tuners, etc
thats all that my kit is right now
but i wanna expand it but i have a real tight budget $500 to $550
so wat are the thing(s) i should buy (guitar or amp or wat)
i like thrash and death so wanna head in that direction musically
also is "jr v" by bc rich a good buy
and can anyone tell me some basic settings for the sm7 pedal coz i just cant get any good, heavy sound outta it (maybe coz of my guiatr or amp)

With your funds I would probably buy some form of Ibanez rg if you're looking for a decent guitar for the price you're looking for. STAY AWAY FROM BC RICH! As for an amp I guess for the price you could get a Cube 30 and you could get a decent heavier tone outta that. Do not get a Spider II though whatever you do. You will wholeheartedly regret it later on.

the long metal ring is a slide.
Its generally used for Blues and country but the technique sometimes crosses genre's
dont attempt to use one, if you dont know what one is there is a hindu's chance in heaven that you are going to be able to use one.

Say, what is all this dislike for bc rich I have been reading here lately? I've never played one myself, so it would be interesting to hear what's wrong with them. Apart from that embarrasing "flame thrower effect" if you've checked out that thread...

I'd replace that 10W amp before you buy anything else.

I'd second that statement. Getting closer to the tone you want can inspire you so much. And I'm guessing pretty much anything could get you closer to that Yamaha. My friend had the same one once. it sounded really bad.

Used ebay Ibanez RG + Roland Cube series practice amp
Best combo for any beginer and can easily be bought for under 550

Conception confusion here:
You are talking about the steel thing you put on your finger, not the technique, right?

i've always called it a bottle neck.
it would be easy to play metal using one, you would just have to adapt the style.
remember you've got three other fingers.
"five minits alone" would probably sound really good.
you just wouldn't be able to to superfast shredding.

Just remember. using a slide guitar is a fairly professional technique. most people on here wouldnt be able to do it and sound good.

i THINK u all have got it wrong
i m not talking bout the effect u get when u press the strings with the bottleneck or such materials
i m talking bout the thing that many METAL guitarists use. it is a ring but it is kinda long and is worn on fingers one or two
hope i made myself clear

Can you give us some examples of some guitarists who wear one or post a picture of this illusive ring type device?

A slide isn't always just a bottleneck or glass. They can be ceramic and metal, and I'm sure there are plenty of other materials that would work as well.
Does this look like what you're talking about?

Slides can be smaller than that too...

Yeah slides come in different sizes, like I said. I personally haven't heard a slide used in metal, but it would be interesting to see your examples.
