Are You Dead Yet...Discussion Of Bodom's Latest Album
Please post your own thoughts regarding their new album "Are You Dead Yet?".
Personally, I feel like Alexi is selling himself short in order to appeal to the masses. Whilst this album was steps ahead of what other metal bands put out, it is sorrowly dissappointing to me compared to Something Wild, Hatebreeder, Follow The Reaper. Hell, I would take the hate crew deathroll stuff over this. There are still solos and cheesy keyboards, they aren't in every song and not to the same extent as in their other albums. Also, it gets annoying hearing Janne's video game sounds from his keyboard. The rhythms and songs in general have almost a nu-metal feel to it, and his vocals in some of the songs are just reeking of nu-metal. If they had gone more the direction of Trashed Lost and Strungout kinda stuff, I would give this album praise, but Trashed Lost and Strungout is the only track on this CD that really satisfies me. It has the heavyness of the other songs (the chugga chugga parts) but it still has the kickass melodies and solos. If this is the stuff their gonna keep putting out, then I guess I'd rather have them break up. Overall, here is my take on it:
Guitars - 6/10 - Still good solos, not enough leads (from what I would expect from bodom), and the guitars have a very fake distortion sound. Sounds as though Alexi may be dumping his mids out on this album.
Keyboards - 3/10 - Janne's keyboard sounds are annoying as hell to listen to on this album. Still great work, but the nintendo sounds just take away my attention from whats actually being played.
Bass - 5/10 - Bass is incredibly low in the mix, yet higher up than HCDR. Average bass playing from what I can hear.
Drums - 7/10 - Nothing spectacular, but thats not saying much, nothing on this album is very spectacular. Jaska still does a great job of holding down the fort.
Vocals - 4/10 - I actually like Alexi's vocals all the way up to Hate Crew Deathroll, but the vocals on this album are really annoying to me.
Some people love this album, but I'd love to see some of the Follow The Reaper/Hatebreeder/Something WIld era style songs made again.

After their first three albums, it all went downhill. I even liked Follow the Reaper, but that Hatecrew Deathroll album was too different to enjoy it. I didn't even bother listening to Are You Dead Yet.

The thing that dissappoints me, is that this album was being listened to by some of the emo/hardcore kids in my school because of the sing songy choruses and shit.

Yes,
I feel CoB has fell in rank due to appealing to the masses. The leads on the new album aren't as catchy as eariler albums. I just feel he/they aren't trying as hard anymore. I think maybe mainstream has to got to em? But, I think Lost, Trashed, & Strungout is fuckin bad-to-the-bone!!! I also like that song on there with the death metal feel. I like how he at least experiemented away from just a complete melodic approach. Laiho is still a top 5 to me, I just hope the future holds "something wild."

the only track i liked on this cd was If You Want Peace...Prepare for War. the rest didnt catch my attention very well, it bored me. a lot of chugging on the guitar and less melodics IMO.

Alexi has stated in two interviews (I'm not sure where I saw them though) that he loves the new Lamb of God and Shadows Fall albums. Maybe he's going for their type of sound, but as other said, I'd like to see "something wild" in the near future.I mean, Something Wild had a lot of ripped riffs and melodies (Lake Bodom, Red Light in My Eyes Part I & II, Deadnight Warrior), but it had a real nice, raw feeling to it, which I liked. It combined that shitty, eerie black metal type of atmosphere with virtuosic playing, and I liked that. Same for Hatebreeder, even though it was less classical and more produced. I liked Follow the Reaper, but even with that album the songs started to sound like B-Side Horror movie riffs, which was taken to its greatest extent on HCDR. And the TL&S EP was good, I was hoping their change in sound was gonna be like TL&S and Knuckleduster.

Yeah, exactly. They are like Metallica to me. I enjoy what they used to do, but when they got the taste for money, they just went down the toilet.

Only earlier Bodom was better (more technical) than most of early metallica (IMO) so its even more of a dissappointment considering Alexi's ability as a guitarist. Bodom at this point should just quit.

Ahhhh fuck yes, that is one of the things that upsets me the most. Like Hammet, just being there, sucking up money, not trying at all when he has all that potential.

The lyrics are not the best, but I don't believe they are the worst ever. The lyrics in Something Wild were decent as were the Hatebreeder lyrics.

Yea, he's still technical, but nothing like the ubertechnical leads in Hatebreeder or Something Wild, or Follow The Reaper, or even HCDR for that matter.

Sometimes as you get older your tastes begin to change and you mellow. I fail to see what's exactly wrong with that except that really. Technical does not equal 'good' depending on the subjectiveness of taste.
Anyway, I don't think I'll cover that ground again.

Except that Alexi isn't really "mellowing" cuz he's making the most aggressive music in the times of CoB. If the MTV style metal is what Alexi wanted CoB to sound like, he's achieved that goal. Hell, they sound like a nu-metal emo band in some of the new songs. I love CoB to death, but this new album is just terrible IMO.

Most of the stuff on Hatebreeder is very difficult. I can't imaging most metal guitarists just playing them.

JacksonGuitars07, I see your point, mate. But there's mellowing in more than one sense. In this case it's the striving for technical perfection. The only way that we could know if Alexi and co are just not in the mood for ultra technical right now or in the mood for more money is to drag out our crystal balls. But if it's inspired by money then they have terrible business sense as they are still creating music that will never see the top 40 pop charts. At most they may convert a few melodic death types.
But that said, there's still some very good stuff on the album in a technical sense. Plus, the most important thing for me when I listen to bands is the ability to emote. No, I'm not talking about EMO and shit, I'm simply talking about the ability to inspire more than just one emotion. Normal death metal and more aggressive bands can't do this. Nothing wrong with that if it's to your taste, but some of us like to be pumped up with one song, groove to the next and mellow out following that (maybe even have a little cry somewhere in there ). In my opinion, if your playing can not do all this then all your musical technique and theory is useless.
What it comes down to is the COB reached a point with FTR where they started creating music I wanted to hear. They've progressed to AYDY and it does it for me on so many levels. I simply don't see anything wrong with that.

Yea, I'm not saying all their new songs suck, just way different and not to my favorite liking. And yes, they are about the money, Alexi has stated numerous times that "If we start to sell less then we will probably just quit"

I personally found this album a breath of fresh air, I mean i love cob to death, and i really found their new album quite good. I mean of course it doesn't compare to their old stuff, but this is just them wanting to do something different for a change. I like the subtlety of their new songs, i mean sure their not as technical (mind you i'll listen to some old school bodom for that ) but like i said this is just a new direction. Its like the whole metallica and black album thing where they decided to try something different from their old stuff yet keep their roots and i think thats what they accomplished, and i believe cob did this as well. Thats just my two cents.
PS new bodom is easier than old bodom, however i never found both particularly that hard. The only thing with old bodom was that some of the bridges were a bit tricky, kissing the shadows anyone

Yea, I finally found out what I hate about the new album. When there are melody breaks in the new songs, such as in Bastards of Bodom, the nintendo keyboard sounds ruin it. Janne should have stuck with the pre-HCDR keyboard sounds and none of this shit.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said.
It certainly sounds like they are trying to appeal to the masses which is a shame. I'm not a huge fan of Something Wild, but I like all their other albums. This one just seems.... meh...

It didn't seem too different to me. I still think Follow the Reaper is the best one but I don't see this as a sellout record. Sure they may have simplified the songs a bit but it is still an OK album to me.

i loved hcdr. it was influenced by those slow and heavy riffs and pinched harmonics (almost zakk wlyde style... sixpunder angels dont kill etc). now they came back a bit to old times imo. more leads again and faster songs ... i like em both.
