To drop D, when you're in standard tuning, all you have to do is drop the E string to D by tuning it to the A string with the seventh fret. IE, the seventh fret on the E string should be the same note as an open A.

To get to C, tune the rest of the strings normally, on the 5th fret. So, tune the A string down until it's the same note as D-5, tune the d string so it's the same as A-5, and so on. Once you're in DGCF tuning, just drop the D string the same way you do to get to drop D.

For C tuning, yeah. There are all sorts of tuners you can download, just search Google for "download bass tuner" or something like that.

alternate tunings

i would recommend (especially for you younger players) a chromatic tuner. you can buy one at any local music store for roughly 20 bucks.then you can tune to whatever til your hearts content.
