Lol... a sock? To lower the action of the strings? Great epic song, the solo is something I've been wanting to learn perfectly since I started playing, but I haven't bother that much with sweeps yet. Nice.

a sock to dampen the strings, and stop them ringing out.

oh my god, is that a serious user? It has to be a joke account.

The sock, I assume, is to dampen the strings. Good idea, I spose, id thought of it but I dno, id like to see it without the string dampener? Ive been trying to learn this solo myself, I can get the down parts (towards chin) done fine, its up sweeps I have problems with, so madd props to you.

Haha, yea that is me. I'm definitely playing it, but in that video I was holding my pick in "lazy" form. When I do slower sweep arpeggios, I tend to keep a lighter grip and focus on using my hand more than my arm (like I do on sweeps played at 240bpm). The sock was just there because I simply forgot...I was actually doing a lot of legato runs and was just trying to get the most effective sound. If I really wanted to go out, I would have just programmed this part on drums and guitars, but I didn't figure it would be such a great video. Thanks for the comments, if you wanna see anything else, let me know.

Great skill, and the way you hold the pick seems dificult to me, i noticed that there is another way holding the pick also, just like you did with like the whole hand, covering all the thumb and index finger, great, but i don`t hold it like that. And that is supposed to called lazy hehe.

Ok, i got that with the sock hehe, but why do you have a sock there, to damp "the sound"????

I know what arpeggios is, its when you play up and down pretty fast right??
but what is leggato?

Well sweeping is a picking hand technique, while scales and arpeggio's are more dominant on your fret-hand. An arpeggio is a reciprocation of a scale, of course containing more notes, but really just based on the scale structure. Sure it can sound crazy, but when you arpeggiate a simple scales, it can sound like a lot more work, when really you are just forming the same thing backwards. I'm not good at explaining guitar methods well, but hopefully this clears up a little...I'm sure there are others on here who could do better!

As for legato...it's consisted of mostly fret-hand independency. Meaning that you use your picking hand little to none when doing this technique. Hammer-on/Pull-off is a huge part of it and if practice a lot, you will notice your playing to be much more solid...specifically in sliding, bends, and of course...legato.

No isn`t that obvious?! And i knew what a sock is in english, i just didn`t see it on his video, and asked the people what the fuck they were talking about.
Then i saw it, and still he has not answered why he would put a sock there,
maybe for the to damp the sound as everybody says. But my question is why? To not play loud, so the neighbours wake up or what? If the guy in the band plays with a sock..

you put a sock on so that when you sweep and move your fingers you dont have to mute the strings. otherwise you have to do taht and that makes sweeping hard. its cheating and its an old studio trick

edit

you put the sock around the first few frets or so. or a towel or any other dampener. ive tied my bathrobe sleeve around it, even

Good god...

Dude....He hung a sock over his neck so the notes wouldn't ring out when he released his finger for the fretboard. To make it sound clearer.

And no in the original they don't use socks

There is some humorous content in here, but aside from that...THE SOCK ON THE NECK IS TO DAMPEN THE STRINGS! I don't need it to play this VR solo, but I needed it to do the other things I was playing, I just didn't think about it being there when I recorded. Hopefully this clears up stuff, I know enough people on here knew what I was talking about and presented it before me, thank you.

Whoa nice video, you've got the technique so smooth in both areas. Can't say I care much for the music; I prefer sweeps amidst other things rather than full-on sweep assaults. The sock aspect? Why is that so confusing? I've used a sock a lot, though I must say I only really use it for tapping, but I will try it for sweeping!

Could you explain a bit more detail on your picking technique? Is it basically to lose the rigidity in your picking fingers too allow more movement and smoothness? What size plectrum do you use by the way?

While it may not be as difficult, I wouldn't mind seeing the arpreggio bits from Spastic Ink 'to counter and groove in e minor' - there's a GP file somewhere.

Great axin'
