Good passive pickup for a bridge PU-only guitar...
... that is not the X2N? Anyone know of any? Something that has more gain than a JB but still has clarity and is very balanced. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I know others are going to hate me for it, but if its an alder body guitar, at this point I'd get an Invader.
But if clarity is something you REALLY care about, maybe a Dimarzio Tone Zone or SD Distortion. Have you looked into EMG's? Those are pretty damned clear in my opinion. Kent Armstrong or Bare Knuckle like xdx suggested.

Hey, my washburn is alder bodied and i have an invader in it and I'm pretty happy with it. Lots of saturation. Lacks mids making it muddy, but I have a 31 bands of EQ to fix that!

Don't you also have the shape knob on the Crate dimed
That thing can get the most annoying, squawky mid-heavy tone ever with the semi - parametric sweep, if you want.
Normally you think Invader = Mud, but that's because people will put that passive p'up in a Les Paul or something else made of mahogany or basswood, giving you unmanageable bass. Putting a bassy pickup in a guitar that is'nt bassy at all ( an alder bodied 'super strat', like Ibanez or Jackson ) yields a full and balanced tone.
You'd be suprised at how many people think that a pickup will have the same effect on every guitar its dropped into, upon judging its sound in one guitar, deciding whether or not the pickup is good or bad objectively. Almost every pickup on the market you buy is a good one, its just intended for a certain use.

Well actually I don't need a lot of bass, I'm just looking for "plain" pickups that sound middy, high gain but clear, like a normal guitar. The kind of sound I'm aiming for in this guitar is something Morbid Angel-esque, Immortal, or like any old thrash metal band. I think an EMG-81 is most likely what I'll be getting if I can't find a passive that meets my needs(I'll throw in an X2N into my other guitar).
The JB sounds good but doesn't have all the gain I need. Is a Duncan Distortion any good? Again, I don't ned a fuckload of br00t3l bass, I'll be using this guitar for E and Eb tunings.

I know most people think these are shit, but I love EMG-HZ-H4's. They have good low end, punchy mid-range,pretty good highs, and I can maintain clarity for lead work perfectly. You might want to find a guitar that has those pickups, try that guitar out to see what it sounds like. I got my HZ-H4 for around 60 bucks. In my opinion, your amp is much more important to your tone, but thats just from my experience. Cheers
