Favorite band for me would be taking it too far to the extreme. I have seen them live a couple times...most of their shit is indistinguishable. Devy's solo work is much better.

Dev is the tortured genuis pesonified! I think it's great that he doesn't give a shit and has over come the stigma of mental illness and uses it to create these fucked up tunes I like all his shit but not a huge fan of the Steve Vai collaboration

Manic depression (or bipolar disorder) has been quiet common in many creative types and artists. It is an affective disorder as it affects mood. The individual experiences extended periods of manic behaviour whereby they are ultra creative rushing from one project to another and producing hyper amounts of work. These elated periods can last for months or years. However the person also swings back the other way and can plumit into deep depression where upon they cease creating and withdraw into a world of despair and hopelessness often attempting suicide. The troughs are felt more because of the ultra highs of the manic state.
Like all mental illnesses, bipolar disorders can be controlled with medication.

I never said he was 'crazy', you coined the term 'crazy' upon hearing he'd spent time in a hospital. This is one stigma about mental illness that needs to be overcome 'oh you've had a mental illness therefore you must be a screaming psycho with a crazy stare and big knife!'
I just highlighted his mental illness, and not 'all' mental illnesses turns people into crazy howling mad Murdoch's(that'll be hebephrenia which is a varity of schizophrenia) but having said that people in a heightened manic state could be perceived as acting in a crazy way as they dart from one thing to the next, talking ten to the dozen and never sitting still or sleeping much.

Mental illnesses are many and varied from depression, bipolar disorder, compulsive behavioural disorders, split personalities/multiple personalities, extreme phobias, personality disorders, psychosis(functional and organic) and the many forms of schizophrenia.

Mental Illness means an illness having one or more of the following characteristics...
1)more than temporary impairment of intellectual functions shown by a failure of memory, orientation, comprehension or learning capacity;
2)more than temporary alteration of mood of such degree as to give rise to the patient having a delusional appraisal of his situation, his past or his future, or that of others or to the lack of any appraisal;
3)delusional beliefs, persecutory, jealous or grandiose;
abnormal perceptions associated with delusional misinterpretation of events;
4)thinking so disordered as to prevent the patient making a reasonable appraisal of his situation or having reasonable communication with others.
5)It also includes prolonged alteration of mood or thought to the point where the individual is no longer able to care for themselves and function within the norms of society.
At the point where they become a danger to themselves because of irrational thought or behaviour or lack of ability to look after themselves the individual can be sectioned here in the UK and admitted to a psychiatric ward for evaluation and treatment.
Though interestingly enough the Mental Health act in the UK doesn't actually define what a mental illness is
