Speed Double Pedal runs?
Hi y'all.
Last night I was watching a program MTV called Superock toghether with my band.
We saw a video of a Fear Factory song (I must first say I don't like'em.. I think their music SUX), it's name is Linchpin.
My drummer was asking how could one play so fast...
Is there a specific technique to play such speeds?

I heard that their drummer uses drum triggers. It's another way to cheat. Of course you could also say that it's another way to make life easy for yourself. But you've got to suffer for it, man.
Again, squats are great and calf stretches are good, working on the thighs are very important. Always keep your heels up. When youre workin the double bass try to hit it as hard as possible while maintaining a good speed.

Or just simply practising it when you're sitting in front of your desk...
It can annoy your mates, tho...

yeah, our drummer can also play the double bass really fast but he's got huge legs haha, he works out and stuff but the biggest part of getting fast is pure practise

jesus christ this response is really late but fuck that one annoyed me.
drum triggers DO NOT MAKE YOU FASTER. fucking morons. they change the tone of drums, but do not enhance speed in anyway.

Slayme's right on this one.
ALL metal drummers nowadays use some form of drumtriggers, usually with the bassdrums. Above a certain speed of playing the natural sound of a bassdrum is too muddy to cut through the mix when lots of distorted and downtuned guitars are involved.
The drummer still has to play his parts though.
It's like a guitarplayer: having more gain gives you more sustain and stuff, but it won't magically make you play like Cannibal Corpse or Pantera or something.

They make it so you get a continous tone out of the double bass and not sloppy hard ones and soft ones etc... constantly the same tone kinda thing

decapitated has a great drumtrigger device. Check out eternity to short, theres constant breaks in the song just to let the drummer show is stuff.

i dint think they used a drummer on the cds? dunno like, according 2 the ir site they used a machine and live they have a drummer, i may be of 2 c em this month, lets hope so.
fear factory use triggers 2 make the bass sound beafy and solid, it takes all the soft hits and hard hits from the pedal hammer and evens em to the sma e volume, so u could drum really quiet and the db would be well loud

nope they definitely use their drummer for it all I have that album Dissimulate and wow is he fast on of the song at the end( I think it was the end anyway)
WOW it's amazing it's even faster than a machine gun no kidding I watched a video of him just doing DB and I even TRIED to count and I kind of came out with about 90 hits of the DB in 4 secs but he said that it was 120 in 6 secs and that is amazing!!
this picture(gif whatever) is of him and it is only with two sticks and it looks like four!

Well first yes Fear Factory does suck ass! And second your drummer need to listen/start off with old MEtallica. you know start with the easy stuff. Then work your way up the ladder as far as double bass is concerned(I like complexity, speediness, and intelligence when it comes to listening to music, thus I listen to MegadetH) to MegadetH(:Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good"), then Slayer(Hell Awaits, and Reign In Blood). For a real challenge, try Morbid Angel("Domination", then for an even greater challenge try Dimmu Borgir("Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia"). And just for the record anyone can do 'speed burst'. The drummer for Fear Factory sucks anyways, if your drummer wants a reference point then have him listen to those band's albums for his inquiries. Its a lot easier to do a speed bursts then to actually play at a certain tempo for a given amount of time like 1 minute for example.

The Berzerker is inhuman when it comes to percussion. fast double bass is good but i like more technical stuff, for example NAPALM DEATH, their drummer is great with double pedal, he plays a lot of versatile rythms other than just constant blast beats. Another band with a great drummer is ORIGIN. And of course, who can deny Dave Lombardo, Peter Sandoval, and Paul Bostaph?
Oh yeah, almost forgot.......CRYPTOPSY

Mick Harris is faster.
Listen to Napalm Death's peel sessions.
You won't hear blazing doublebass performances, but you'll hear the fastest human-made (non-triggered) blastbeats.

Not true.... I use triggers for my death metal band. It is not cheating at all. It just defines the bass drum sound. When you are playing without triggers in a fast and heavy band, the bass drums get lost in the mix. Triggers are a way of solidifying your sound.

Fear factory is not that fast. You should check out some REAL fast drummers. Berzerker (of course), Nile, Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel... i could go on forever but i dont feel like it. Vinnie on Damage Plan is pretty good now too.

I have to disagree with you all. Triggers are not completely cheating, but they do allow a drummer to play sloppy, and not be called on it. It allows him to barely tap the bass drum, and still get a perfect sound. This of course allows him to play faster, even though he may not be doing it 100% right..Some will say thats cheating, some wont. Either way Decapitated and Vital Remains have the best drummers ever...

Forgot to mention, triggers are also used so that in a live show setting, people dont have to spend a lot of time on mic'ing the drums, trying to get good sounds.

I'd just like to point out that you can use triggers to sound faster/better than you are.
1. You can play soft or hard however you want, as long as you trigger the sampler, it'll play a good hit.
2. You can add samples containing 2 hits instead of one, thus enabling you to only play half the speed.
I'm not saying people do though.

Yup, that is why some will call it cheating, because there are naturals who play just as good with no triggers

No, i mean if a guy played on a regular kit, his left and right kicks might not sound even, even if there are on time. The triggers allow perfect sound, also allowing you to play faster than you really are.
