Building your own guitar...
I've been looking to buy a cheap-ass axe just to have something to fuck around with, but I'm starting to wonder if I can build my own easily for cheap as well. If I were to buy all the parts(body, neck, pickups, tuners, bridge, electronics and pots), would it be difficult at all to put it together, like just snapping and popping everything into place? I hear that setting up the bridge/routing is a pain in the ass?
Is it possible to find all the parts for dirt cheap? How much would I be spending on tuners, the bridge, and some electronics? I'm thinking of getting an Ibanez neck and some RR or flying V body off ebay, not a whole lot of people buy those parts so I might have some luck to pull something off cheap.
I've already taken a look at warmoth.com. Good stuff for projects but I'm not willing to spend that much, I just want to build one from other parts I can grab for dirt cheap.

mayeb try get a cheap guitar, taking it apart, routing the body for a trem,pu and whatever, putting it back together, and see how that works.
its definatly possible, but u gotta know what ur doing, i could probaly make my own axe, with just buying a complete neck, and doing the routing for a trem bridge etc myself, i know what to de, but id still try if on a few cheap pieces of shit guitars (or maybe just a plain piece of wood) to get the routing for a trem done GOOD.

apart from searching guitar luthiers forums, or leafing through a couple of books, id reckon you should steal a top of the line ESP guitar, sand the logos off and claim that you threw it together as your practice guitar.
if anyone asks, theyll take a look, ask if its your first guitar, youll respond affirmatively, then theyll respond with, " figures, these frets arent finished properly, the necks warped, the electronics are crappy, the setup is off, the only good thing going for it is the paint, otherwise better luck for your next project".

Necks
Necks are always rediculously expensive. And I would highly recomend not making one yourself. Unless you have REALY done your research on it

yeah if you want to make a custom guitar, buy the parts, don't make anything cause guitars have certain specifications that need to be exact in order to have good an all around good tone.
but you'll probably want to buy an epiphone or a squier, and just play with that.

soeru: if youre serious, then do as much research as possible, and try to have a book handy as well if youve got noone pointing you in the right direction.
you could try performing individual jobs. eg, with fretting, tryrefretting a shitty guitar, or refinishing a crappy guitar.
you could try an easy project first, but if you really wanna build something then just go for it. even if you fail, youll probably get more out of by doing something about it.
good luck

i got an ibanez neck on ebay for 40 quid, but it had a massive great crack in it(i knew when i bought it). i got 5 humbuckers for 30 quid, which were all microphonic. i made my own body, which wasn't that hard, but wasn't that easy either. so long as youve got the proper edges and measurements, routing is easy. its when you try and do it free hand thats hard.
