Peavey Valve King
Hey, I just noticed this Valve King on the Peavey site and I was looking at the 2x12. Has anyone played it, and if so, does it have more of that vintage sound, or can it handle modern tones? I'm hearing pretty good things about it, and the price tag on it seemed really decent so......yeah, just leave some comments.

Of the clips I heard, the stock model has a bit of a fizzy distortion on it, but it's definately got SOMETHING going for it...i bet if you swapped either the tubes or speakers out it'd be a regular monster.

Yeah, I was really surprised when I saw the 2x12 for like $699. But like the head is like $499, so I was thinking it might sound decent w/ like a 1960 cab or something.

I played yesterday.
My review ?
I explored pretty much all of the tonal capabilities ( that you can in twenty minutes anyway ), including the knob on the back that changes the voicing of the tubes ( however it does that ). I'll say that if you can nab a head for 300$ its a great deal, much like the BV. Its no 5150 of course, but I'm sure you can put a boost pedal in front of it. It has more of an old Marshall sort of gain to it, I could get some Morbid Angel tones from it by itself.

Yeah, I heard some sound clips of it and the cleans seemed pretty decent, helluva lot better than the 5150 at least. The Ultra gain channel on it seemed to have that honky-Slayer-JCM800 type tone w/ like the mids all high.

Good call ... But they'll have that great value only on the aftermarket, MF wants 479 for the 100 watt head, with a list of 600 ( If they made a cheaper 50 watt version they'd move tons of those units ). On the E-bay market you're looking at maybe 300$, and for seven tube operation, A/B blend and all around good tone, its going to be a winner.
EDIT : The cabs are nothing to write home about, either. I played a JSX through it and it just was'nt ... eh.
