angel of death
hey,
i wanna start to learn and play the really fast slayer solos which are on reign in blood, in particular, angel of death.
but i just wanted to know what kinds of excercises and what kind of things i would have to do to build up strenght and speed and help me to be able to pull them off.
thank you very much, any help is greatly appreciated
p.s. who here can play the solos from reign in blood or angel of death?

Slayer's solos don't follow any sort of conventional scale structure, just learn their solos, and practice them s l o w l y. They are excercises unto themselves.

trempick on everystring as fast as u can.. duh
also, ur fretting hand, just play whatever paters up and down, just to get ur fingers flexible to get that kinda speeds done.
or u could practice some hate eternal licks from solos, that rutan guy is extremely fast, im busy on the beyond redemption tab, and the start of the solo i very fast
anyway, trempicking, and flexible fingers thats all i guess

Also learn the diminished scale. Slayer uses that quite a bit.

Not to seem like an arsehole... But slayer generally isn't good to learn as your first few solos etc, with the exception of a couple like Mandatory Suicide. They're sometimes quite technically demanding if you're starting out, but the biggest drawback is that their playing style and musical value won't benefit and enhance your playing greatly due tot he lack of 'theory' behind them, you may struggle to develop a feel for lead work...
Get up your picking by practicing pedalled scales with alternate picking:
0-4-0-5-0-7-0-8-0-10-0-12
etc
Hope that heklps

Just buy the Tab Book for Reign In Blood and practice everything really, really S L O W. Thatīs the key to be able to play fast, play slow (WTF). But it works. It really does. But I also donīt think Slayer solos is the best thing to start out ewith. Try Metallica solos, theyīre kinda easy. But to get a good speed You should just try to learn scales, arpeggios and just practice very slowly. I usualy warm up with:
E: 5 6 7 8
A: 5 6 7 8
D: 5 6 7 8
G: 5 6 7 8
B: 5 6 7 8
E: 5 6 7 8
and back
E: 9 8 7 6
B: 9 8 7 6
G: 9 8 7 6
D: 9 8 7 6
A: 9 8 7 6
E: 9 8 7 6
And for my right hand (outside picking):
E: 5 6 7
A: 5 6 7
D: 5 6 7
G: 5 6 7
B: 5 6 7
E: 5 6 7
and back
E: 8 7 6
B: 8 7 6
G: 8 7 6
D: 8 7 6
A: 8 7 6
E: 8 7 6
or this one:
E:7 6 5 5 6 7 6 5
B: 7 7 6 5 7 6 5 5 6 7 6 5
G: 7 7 6 5 7 6 5 5 6 7 6 5 D: 7 7 6 5 7 6 5
A: 7 (and so on..)

Jeff does but Kerry donīt. I read an interview with K.K (it was 94) and he said that "heīs pretty close". Jeff does some of his solos just as on the records but I donīt think he can do it no more or he just donīt give a fuck now days. The solos on Mandatory Suicide and Seasons In the Abyss for exemple they are not at all like the ones Jeff did on the records.

Did you look at learning at mandatory suicide? It's a bit cheesy with the pentatonic stuff, but once you get the feel of it try to play it more in the style of Decapitated etc... I'll try to doa recording to show how I mean once this bastard RSI has calmed down

I can play (only Kerry Kingīs solos) the solo in War Ensamble, Dittohead, Hallowed Point, Dead Skin Mask, South of Heaven and I gonna try to learn some other solos from Divine Intervention and Seasons In the Abyss. Kerry King did the best solos on those 2 albums, IMO.

Ok, now Iīm sober...
Jeff improvises his solos live now days. Kerry King donīt. I donīt think Jeff can play his old solos anymore, not all of them. Kerry King plays his solos exatly the same live as he did on the records. Thatīs what he mean with "pretty close". Hope You understand what I mean...??

To start out with Slayer solos might get ya in trouble. I wouldnīt do that. Learn the basic scales first. That is my advice. And play everything SLOW!

The solo in Seasons in the Abyss was the first solo I EVER learned, and it wasn't that hard for me really, you just gotta get the feel of it with the picking hand.... Learning Slayer was a major turning point for my guitar playing, it made me SOO much better at the instrument, not to mention most Slayer is really fun to play!.. Makes you strong with your picking hand at least, but so do other things...

I donīt know what they called in english but in swedish they called church scales. Thatīs the usual C-sharp and A-minor. ( I think itīs called C-charp).
Itīs 7 different fingersettings, not 7 different scales, C-sharp is the same scale as A-minor, just in unother place on the fretboard. You see what I mean? Iīll give You an example:
E: 3 5 7
B: 3 5 6
G: 2 4 5
D: 2 3 5
A: 2 3 5
E: 1 3 5
E: 5 7 8
B: 5 6 8
G: 4 5 7
D: 3 5 7
A: 3 5 7
E: 3 5 7
E: 7 8 10
B: 6 8 10
G: 5 7 9
D: 5 7 9
A: 5 7 8
E: 5 7 8
E: 8 10 12
B: 8 10 12
G: 7 9 10
D: 7 9 10
A: 7 8 10
E: 7 8 10
E: 10 12 13
B: 10 12 13
G: 9 10 12
D: 9 10 12
A: 8 10 12
E: 8 10 12
E: 12 13 15
B: 12 13 15
G: 10 12 14
D: 10 12 14
A: 10 12 14
E: 10 12 13
E: 13 15 17
B: 13 15 17
G: 12 14 16
D: 12 13 15
A: 12 14 15
E: 12 13 15
Start with these
And than You got Your Yngwie scale A-minor harmonic:
E: 7 8 10
B: 6 9 10
G: 5 7 9
D: 6 7 9
A: 5 7 8
E: 5 7 8

I got one US Custom KKV Tribe with Kahler. One Swedish Custom KKV all black and one Ran Guitars Urban Camo KKV Custom. So just one black. I got pics of all guitars and my rig pretty soon...
180 bpm is kinda good. But try all scales and when You nail them at 200 bpm You should be good to go. I can play 200 bpm and I can play most of Slayerīs solos. But itīs more to it than just be able to do the chromatic scale, try them all...

I bought it from a guy called "SOMD" in Germany. He bought when he was at NAMM-99 and itīs signed by Kerry King and Bernie Rico. The guitar is petty badass!
