I'm also a huge fan of Dismember's tone! Their sound comes mostly from their amps. They sounded like solid state to me, and in a video I have I saw they had a Randall head and cab. The guitars, much like Entombed, sound pretty "nasal", probably from lowering down the tone knob and boosting mid EQ or something, but the actual sound is kind of muddy so maybe try a Tonezone or an Invader? Your pickups won't make that HUGE of a difference(active/passive difference is a little more obvious, and also extremely high output passives compared to a SD '59 or a single coil).

I saw Obituary live and one guitarist was playing a Fender strat with stock single coils while the other dude had an ESP strat with an 81/S/S combo, and they didn't sound different at all.

What do u mean by Dismember being pure mud? Their new album wasn't bad, just nothing innovative.

new album doesnt have any contour to the guitar... its just a wall of noise...

and im so damn sure that they use boss HM-2's to get that wierd airy sound... thats the only pedal with that wierd mid range...

the song Death Evocation, the guitar is distorted, but the solo is just sooo smooth... i want to try and emulate that, and then build off of it.

Listen to some Intestine Baalism and early Entombed if you like Dismember, good shit.

Yeah, just get some mid or high output pickups(depends on how much grind you want) that have a lot of mid range sound. Like the Dimarzio FRED, has an assload of mids and is said to sound very good in the neck along with an X2N.
