Melodic tip
I am looking for some good melodic and/or progressive bands, with some really hot riffs and solos and a good singer to top it of. Does anyone, by chance, have any good suggestions?
My wallet is beginning to complain at all my oh-well-let's- buy-it-and-see-if-it-is-what-I'm-looking-for-attitude.

Well, I guess that answers that. Since I am fairly new into heavy metal I don't really know what I want apart from the fact that I think the melodic and progressive bands are much more fun to try to duplicate.
Anyway, let me just point out that this forum and everyone on it is much welcome addition to my everyday life, since my neighberhood is more or less devoid of people who would even touch a HM-album with a ten-foot stick.
Thanks for all the tips, I will work trough them as time and money allows. And maybe come back to discuss them with some who actually knows the shit - on a proper, excisting thread; no hard feelings!

I agree with the Black Dahlia Murder, both albums are great.
If you literally want melodic metal then check out Impelitterri. Songs i'd definetely recommend are "Hungry Days", "Shed Your Blood", "Slay The Dragon", and "Leviathan". Good singer, Great riffs, Extremely good leads (Chris Impelitterri is like a slightly better Malmsteen I'd say).
