Over used/ under used techniques in metal
By now, i think we've all noticed many techniques employed by death metal players. One that i'm getting tired of is tremolo picking. If you have anything you would like to see more bands use, feel free to say that too.

sorry man, but i can in no way agree with you. i love tremolo, and cant get enough/play enough of it. thats just me, and ill never stop. i see it as a way to make slower notes sound fast. not to mention that tremolo goes PERFECT with blast beats AND double bass. it just suits metal so well. so i could never tire of it. on the other hand, i think, sometimes, tapping is "under used". tapping should'nt be restricted to solos. it can be done with many lower strings and frets as well and still sound cool.

I think tapping is good...but not when it comes in shitty hardcore fashion. One thing i think is over used is pinch harmonics. Now granted i love them and they do sound awesome at some parts, when people just throw it in just for fun it sickens me. I think someone needs to come up with a new sound for the guitar. Just do something that sounds incredibly retarded just saying it and make it sound fucking sweet. Kind of what like the dude from Rage Against The Machine did. Im not too big on thier music but wat he did was just freekin sweet.

I think trem picking does go well with metal, but palm muted riffs like
|------------3-----------------
|----3-----2-----------3----------
|0-0--0-0-----0-0-0-0---00----- Ect
I think are over used, i dont really like it.
In some songs pinch harmonics are over used too.
And over-repeated riffs seem to be happening more and more nowdays in metal

Blast beats are overused. Same with the boom-smack-boom-smack style of drums. However, blast beats are one of my favorite things so I am in no way complaining.

Some perverse lust for experimenting has actually put me towards UPtuning and some extensive use of the Capo. Of course, I am fairly new to metal so I don't know how much it is used in general. By itself the result is mostly quite cheesy, but combined with a normal tuned guitar and a good bass the result is sometimes downright awesome, at least for amateurs.

People that uptune make me want to sell guitar necks. I'd be rich off of morons like you.

Oh, I needn't worry about that. I know my - read my instrument's - limitations and anyway I hold little wish to enrichen the likes of you. Cheers.

Hmmm....
I agree with the pinch harmonics, used quite often. I also think the diminished scale is overused in death metal. Now, I love the diminished bastard, but like every other riff in DM is based on the diminished scale. I'm sure you can't achieve the same theme using the major scale (underused), but I'd like to hear something different. I also think blast beats are overused. I think arpeggios are somewhat underused for riffs, I hear sweeps and pieces of arpeggios but mainly in solos.

I think sweeps could be used more in riffs.

I'd like to hear a stronger bass presence, and some more slap.
I do find tremolo picking a bit tiresome sometimes if overused, but most bands i have listened to don't use it too much.

I've used capos before in songs. In my old band, myself and the other guitarist were very rarely tuned the same and this created many intersting ideas and sounds plus it buggered up the bass player as he never knew what to play!

Awesome insight people, Also, i've noticed the trend in diminished too. a bit more harmonic minor would be nice imo.
