mastodon sound
i've always been wondering how mastodon got their grindy sound.
Basically all i know is that they use S.Duncan pickups in gibson guitars. Nothing about their electronics or amps or distortion pedals (if any).
if anybody knows, that would be awesome.

They use Laney VH100R heads, not that that really helps a lot but yeah.

when i saw them live at graspop, one guitarist had a laney vh100 head and the other was using a marshall tsl head and marshall 1960a cabs by the look of it.

p.s there sound really wasnt to good live, it lacked definition and sounded pretty crap

Don't think, do! The VH100R has plenty of definition, but you need to tweak it a lot, and i'd recommend an external EQ in the FX loop of the 2nd channel to help get the right sound out of the distortion

sorry, im not stealing your thread,but...
ive replaced all the tubes in my amp save one. the reverb tube. its the first in line and now i ifind its the one thats been giving me trouble. so, does it matter like what brand or anything? does it influence my sound that much? i can get jj or eh 12au7 for 8 bucks each. only need one.

Get one, and if you find that you don't like the sound, its only $8. Also, you can keep it as a spare for when your reverb tube goes again, mid gig

What do you think of a Digitech Death Metal (set at full mid scoop with other settings pretty high) through a Laney MXD120 Twin Effects? |

I can't say that i've used either bits of gear, although with settings like those, you'd struggle to cut through the mix. At the end of the day though, its your tone, and you know what you wanna hear Laney =
