Don't know what type. (I can show you a picture if that helps). Has three strings. 16 frets.

Well, usually (on the most common type of balalaika) the tuning is EEA.

i have a balalaika
it's easy to play, and you cant really play a bad note/chord on it...
it's hard to hold. with the scooped bowl styled acoustic back it doesnt sit well on anyones lap.
i tune it either ACE or DAB, using a Boss TU-80 tuner, from thicker string -> thinner.
