If you haven't heard the songs "Ghosts" or "Autumn" by Strawbs the tone and rhyme scheme reminded me of those. And it got me inspired to write a concept piece myself.

You're fine. Don't worry about it. That band has some very haunting medieval sounding songs. Their keyboardist was Rick Wakeman from King Crimson. The song Life Auction has a lot of the song "Epitaph" in it. I think KC's song came out before "Life Auction" though. Check out the song "Witchwood" if you like the time change things and stuff.
I've sung along with records, tapes, and cd's for a long time and some things just get ingrained. I'll pick up a vibe from a verse and get bits of melody or tone. If I could produce what I hear in my head I'd have it made. And since I listen to about anything that range is pretty broad.

Opeth-- If you like that line and it gives the description you want, leave it alone. If you aren't satisfied with it then change it.
Chiffon mist blankets barren trees -- would work but I'm not sure I like the illusion of chiffon/blankets since one is filmy thin and one is heavier. Hit dictionary.com and go to the thesaurus and see if anything else sounds feasible there.

Hey, I use that site a lot and also a rhyming dictionary site. They can be a godsend.

I have an instructional poetry book somewhere around here and one of the things that stuck with me was that back in the dark ages or whenever he was around Chaucer complained about the use of obscure words and thought it better to use plain old layman's language than big ones no one had ever heard of.
You're a guy and you can talk. That's 2 strikes there anyways. So there!
