ok. well some of their artists are new age guitar virtuosos as well old.
they got: steve vai, eric johnson, Al Kooper, Tommy Emmanuel, James Robinson,Adrian Legg,Kenny Ellis, Larry Coryell, Peter Huttlinger, billy sheehan,Peppino D'Agostino,Philip Aaberg,Dweezil, Gregg Bissonette, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, and Stuart Hamm.just to name a few
bass and guitar virtuosos that specialize in differnt styles of play, not just one genre

They're like Shrapnel but with less metal-flavoured shred.
And YJM, someone needs to say it : You're an elitist.

Its not that you have bad tastes in music or playing, but give Defeated Sanity, Psyopus or Severed Saviour a listen to : There are just as many virtusos in bands like those.

The main weakness of a 'Virtuoso' is the ability to make a song... Half the time they stick with shitty 'outre' scales that sound terrible. To generalise, technical bands are generally crap,w ith the exception of a few songs that just grasp into a clear musical sense. Bands and guitarists that I love such as Spastic Ink are a clear example of this, whereby an entire album is tedious and often unsatisfying, whereas a select few songs, such as counter and groove are great pieces. Beyond this, songs featuring SI's guitarist such as "Rivers Dancing" by "Gordian Knot" (I recomend you to check this song out) are fantastic and provide everything you'd want from music, as well as blazing technicalities.
I've never been a fan of Steve Vai, Satriani etc and similar 'virtuosos'. Call me ignorant, but in my opinion, trying to make a masterpiece of musical creation on electric guitar is an automatic handicap. The tones and possibilities just don't cut, when compared to other instruments such as a violin for example. This was a rude lesson I was taught through briefly taking an A level in music: total ignorance to electric guitar (especially distorted) was a perpetual handicap for me. I ended up playing my live piece with this in mind. I basically turned up drunk and shredded for five minutes, basing my piece on A harmonic minor with a couple of scalar shifts etc to back up the theory. The result? The crowd loved it, due it's originality (from their point of view, remember everyone else does what you'd expect: pianos and woodwind etc) but the teachers and 'authority' (especially the other twats playing shitty bad fingerstyle stuff) didn't approve.
I hate Steve Vai's playing style, it does nothing for me. I love Malmsteen's (talking about the general lead work) though, as even though it is over the top and now somewhat cliché, it's a style of playing I link to electric guitar and it fits. I see too many of these virtuoso's acts as a novelty act, not a musical one. Now I'm no hallmark in judging, but the amount of artists I've listened to, thought "wow..." for a few minutes, then never looked back is quite long. A classic example is Francesco Faerari (spelling...) who in my eyes sweeps insanely fast with a shit tone, shit music and boring/little progression.
The moral of my ignorant view is: If it's fucking hard to play and sounds shit, you've wasted your time. It's hard to describe what I'm saying, but hopefully someone here knows...
This may cause some discussion, but if it didn't, I'd consider my opinion not worth contributing.

i know what u mean. but this still isnt a shred label. yes there are a few shredders but the rest are flamenco, classical, and anyother accoustic genre
