Chip repairing...

So i got my guitar through in the post, and despite it being packaged well, Royal Mail still managed to damage the body slightly The chip is about the size of a £1 coin (roughly 1inch for the non-english). I have a few pieces of the missing paintwork, but not all of it. My question is: how is the best way to go about repairing this chip? I would like to do it myself, although obviously if its going to cost a lot, i'd take it to a tech to do?

Also, how is the best way to clean a maple fretboard, to get rid of the crap round the frets?

Cheers

EDIT: attactched pictures

sounds big, and if it is in an exposed place definately take it to a repair guy.

frets: get a j-cloth and wipe it off.

Its a Charvel Model 4, i like the metallic red colour that it is, so i want to keep it It needs an overhaul, my list of things to do are:

Sort out paint chip
Restring and tune to C#
Clean the fretboard
Swap out the pickups for JB/Hot Rails/'59
Gut the electronics and re-do from scratch
Install straplocks
Clean the floyd rose (liscenced), possibly replacing some rusty screws
Possibly replace some bits on the locking nut

A few things to do, but it should be a quality axe when finished

That's a real bummer mate
Good old Royal Mail! They probably kicked it all the way to your door!
I would seriously log a complaint with them, maybe see if you can get them to pay for the damage, might be an idea to contact Citizens Advice as I'm not sure legally if they're liable for damage to goods in transit?

Other than that you'd best take it to a pro and get the fix done properly after all it's your new baby!

Those fucktard mail people I would be pissed. The only way to truely repair a paint job is to have it all redone. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Fuck thats some brutal chippage.

I've been working at a courier depot, and let me tell you, i wouldnt get a guitar sent anywhere without it being held in tight, in a hard case.
Fradgile has no meaning when its busy, trust me.

save some cash and paint it yourself using the ebook from paintyourownguitar.com, I always paint guitars myself with car spray cans and get great results, costs a shitload less than getting someone else to do it.

Rather than create a new thread, i'll re-use this one, my question is:

Is it better to give my current tremolo (Jackson floyd rose) an overhaul by taking it apart completely, cleaning it, taking away bits of rust, repaint etc. or just buy a new floyd rose? I'd probably need to buy some new posts that attatch it to the body (forget the technical term for them) anyway, as these are in pretty bad shape.

Also, im re-doing the electronics, and i was wondering, with the pots and the switches, do the expensive 'high-quality' pots have any tonal difference as opposed to your standard Maplin/Radioshack components?

for the floyd, if you have the money its best just to buy a new one. Preferably an OFR. If not you can replace parts of the bridge, like the sadles and stuff.

not sure about pots, but I would just get allparts ones.

about the original topic - a solution to filling in that chip very cheaply is nail polish. it wont look that good, but it wont be as noticable. anyways, i'd just live with it. gives your ax character.

Time to re-use this thread again...

I have 3 toggle switches, and 3 pots to play with, but i don't know what configuration to have them in, im thinking having two of the switches being coil-tap for the two mini-humbuckers, but i don't know what to do with the others. Theres gotta be one master volume, but i want the tone to be balanced between the 3 pickups, has anyone got any suggestions?

One thing I'm doing at the moment is working on a cheapo guitar, I've made it fretless from the 15th fret up. But I've also stripped the paint off(I'm in the process of sanding the body) I plan to stain it so it should look similar to Herman Li's axe(I say, should!).
Electrics side, I've replaced the neck single coil with a humbucker and I shall be keeping the middle single coil and bridge humbucker. What I plan to do is replace the 5-way selector with individual 2-way toggle switches for each pick-up, that way I can have any pick-up configeration I wish, I have just the one volume and tone pot. So in a way I'm sort of at the same stage as yourself, if anyone has any info or web pages on wiring up, I'd appreciate it. Cheers.

you want my honest advice?

quit being a bitch and just play it... after all thats what its about.

the only guitarist i know that cares about looking pretty is malmsteen, and even he doesn't pull it off very well! not in his recent "you fucking cunts" years.
