Put a bridge humbucker in it and you should do fine. I think they sound quite good with humbuckers, not "Fender"ish at all. If I could just stand the profile of a Fender neck ... Schecter makes a tele like this.

I play a Telecaster with a Humbucker in the Bridge
It plays Metal extremely well.
You are about to get flamed by people says things like (Zomg! Tel3's Suxxor you N00b!) There are a lot of people who will tell you that a Tele sucks for metal.
But those same people would have never tried to play Metal on a Tele thats set up for it.
but dont listen to them. Telecaster are extremely versatile guitars. set up right they will play almost anything.
Oh. and a tele's action is by default very Low. it makes my pants move

It would make perfect sense how a Tele with humbuckers performs well in metal, it certainly has enough wood in the body. I don't care what any of you say, a Tele with humbucking pickups has balls.

sure a tele can do metal very well. many come with humbuckers. the lamb of god guy uses or used to use a fender tele. i thinkits a fender showmaster tele that has the same pu' s as my shecter and looks almost as nice. i like the neck alot better on the tele. also the musicians friend tele is nice and cheap. got duncan humbuckers, abalone inlays(dot). only 399

hmmm... My initial arsehole response would be
"You can't polish a turd"
After owning a high end fender (which was the 1994 Yngwie Signature) I'm really not an appreciator of Fender's construction (though this did have a maple neck). Do the bodies and necks allow for the resonance and sustain you need to make the most of and control high levels of gain? I find this to be the main problem in models that are not born into metal but almost get there through modifications...
Sorry to sound like an arsehole with this post

i stat this everytime i hear its name...
I. HATE. TELES! PERIOD!
EDIT: although Fender does have the capability to build really sweet metal guitars, these arent prime examples IMO, though if you want a fender really bad, and want a metal sound, check Ebay and the like for the 1988 HM Heavy Metal Strat Stratocaster, i own one and it kicks ass, Khaler Syder bridge, thin neck, Duncans, its great

I think everyone is forgetting that guitars are personal preference and that just becasue you dont like it, doesnt mean its a bad or ugly guitar.

fenders can play metal it's just ignorant people who say they can't. Get some SA's or throw a humbucker in and whats the diff. ( tone wise )

I forgot what their name was, but there's a Melodic Speed metal band from like Finland that sounds like Kalmah. Their guitarist uses a tele and he gets this thick heavy sound out of it, so yeah, a tele can sound good.

On the Wintersun recordings, Jari used a Tele for the leads, and a Jackson for the rest (and a damn fine job of it he did too!)

You could use a 2x4 with humbuckers for metal, but will it perform as well was a Jackson or something similar? Survey says no, but whatever you feel most confortable playing, dude.
