In general: German is a more complex language grammatically, but it all makes sense and coheres. English is a clusterfuck, even though the grammar is relatively uncomplicated, but it doesn't seem difficult anymore because of its saturation - it's possible to live virtually anywhere and be exposed to English on an everyday basis. But seriously, conjugate some common verbs in English and see if they make any fucking sense. That's why people have trouble with it.

What are you doing for your internship? I don't recall (not that I'm around much) you being a journalism student, though that might be interesting.

im not actually a journalism major, nor have i ever taken a journalism class....im an english major but i thought this internship would be interesting and useful on the old resume. a bit of a trial by fire since i dont really know much basic journalism stuff....but its not too bad. they liked my writing samples so thats how i got the position

That doesn't tell me what they're having you do.

Every now and then I consider trying my hand at journalism, since a job that's heavily writing would be a dream. The rest of the time I consider that it's probably better to have a completely unrelated job. But almost two years of restaurant work and I'm reconsidering.

I veer a little too far towards anarcho-socialism on certain topics to be hired by Fox News.

But I do work as a cook, so you're not far off.

Shouldn't be surprised. Construction pays. Better still when you're off the books, though. I miss Chicago. Anyway, college has long since stopped being the deciding factor between making money and not, if it ever was.

And what am I the other 10% of the time, darling?

I'm still interested in what the newspaper's having Tranny do.

Has anybody else here taken Astronomy? The planetarium we use in my class has SUCH AMAZING SEATS. Although I find the class boring and try to fall asleep every time, the subject actually interests me and I read outside of class!

Well, I do love to suck the cock.

Sounds interesting. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of stuff didn't wind up published/posted, at least at first, since it would be truly strange if they guaranteed an intern that his work would be put up. Though I don't know. You gonna hook us up with a link to all this goodness?

College (or collage, to construction workers) degrees probably won't make me much more money in the real world than a construction worker or plumber would make. It's simply the only way I can go about plying my trade; anyone interested in making a career out of science, math, writing, art, engineering, computer shit, and even athletics either needs to or will do much better having graduated from college.

Another way to put it is that college is the way they trick kids into paying exorbitant amounts of money in order to earn a piece of paper that allows them to find a job where they can make less or the same as people who can't spell college. Did that make sense?

German is complex but since it's a Germanic language like Dutch, it's not that hard for me. I visit Germany on a monthly basis, so I get to use it every now and then, which keeps me up to speed.
I learned my first English when I was young and developed it from there, now I read a lot of scientific stuff in English. It took a while before I got used to the scientific words and terms but once you get the hang of it, it's not that hard.

I once heard a guy from England speak Dutch, I laughed my ass off. But it's an incredible difficult language, our grammar just doesn't make sense and on top of that our grammatical 'rules' have been changed quite a bit through the years.

French is a pain in the ass for me, I can read/write it decently but when I'm in France I just can't keep up with the pace. Every French dude that hears you speak French thinks you can understand him just fine if he speaks like he's in a rap battle. Asking them to slow down doesn't help much either.

Maybe this is true in the U.S. but it's quite different over here in the E.U.! Construction doesn't pay jackshit here because this work has heavy competition, since it is beeing insourced a lot by using workers from Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Latvia, etc.

I make twice as much compared to a friend of mine who works as an electrician on construction sites.

It's not entirely true in the US, either. I'm sure statistically, college graduates make a little bit more than non graduates. For the most part, though, we only have the potential to earn more. A great percentage of us don't, but those percentage that do make so much more that they probably skew things.

In other words, as a bio major, once I graduate, I'll be stuck in graduate school and probably teaching some stupid lab just to pay for my own education. I'll still need financial aid to tie up loose ends like books, food, rent, gas, etc. After (or instead of) four more years, I could choose to work for the government (conservation commisions, US Fish & Wildlife, state Fish & Wildlife, Forestry Department, Parks Department, etc.) and make as much or a little bit more than a construction worker. After that (or instead) I could get a job as a professor at a college while doing research work; after 10+ years, I could earn tenure, make a lot more money, work at a museum, zoo, or serpentarium on the side. My potential earnings are considerable, but not for a very long time. I will be broke for many years until then. In the meantime, I will be drastically outearned by manual labor everywhere in the country.

Yeah, it really, really depends on what you take in college. My friends who were economics majors came out with entry level jobs earning them $80-120,000/yr, before bonuses. These jobs would also do things like fund their hobbies and any further education they wanted to undertake. Everyone else (econ is pretty much the only practical concentration offered at the UofC) got into your standard low-level jobs, most having nothing to do with their major. Or got into further education, to make the major practical in another few years.

College doesn't really guarantee earning potential. What a degree does, for the most part, is indicate to prospective employers that you can take orders and consistently do a certain amount of paperwork within certain guidelines - so any number of humanities degrees qualifies you to do office work. Office jobs tend to have better starting pay than the equivalent unskilled jobs that don't require any education. But they don't usually pay better, in the States at least, than construction jobs, especially ones with unions.

So it's not necessarily a factor when it comes to earning potential. It's more of a determinant in the types of jobs available to you, or the types of career paths you might want to pursue. Chris, for example, wants to fuck lizards or something, and they don't let you near as many lizards as it takes to sate his sexual appetite without some degrees. But if he were content to have sex with people he could probably drop out of school right now.

It's pretty interesting to know that there's so much difference in income over there. Most people with a master's degree find a good job over here, ofcourse with some studies it's a bit more difficult but overall they land just fine.

I don't exactly know how your college system works, in Europe we just adopted the BA-MA system a while back. We have HBO (which I think is your college and gets you a bachelor title) and University (which gets you a master title)

If you look at earning potential then we have a difference over here as well but most 'educated' jobs pay very well over here.
What may be of influence is our potential workforce, we have a very big problem facing us, which is refered to as the 'grey wave'. The WWII baby-boom generation is now slowly entering retirement and this grey trend will go on until 2025.
But we also have another problem, there aren't enough youngsters to fill the gap the baby-boom workforce will leave behind. Which basically means that there's work for everyone right now, if you have an education, you're set. There's a huge shortage of young potentials, even in today's economic climate.

I wonder if you have a similar problem in the U.S. and Canada? I don't even know if there was a baby-boom after WWII over there, but I can imagine there was.

First off, I want to fuck snakes and not lizards, and you KNOW this.

This operates under the assumption that I'm socially adept enough to find sex with other humans. If the past six months have proven anything, it's that I'm not. Taking last semester off was a HUGE mistake, whether it was necessary or not. I'm seriously doubtful as to how I'm going to find sex after I graduate. I don't think I can get laid outside of school or work.

In the US/Canada, we have colleges, universities, and junior colleges (aka community colleges).

Here are the degrees earned and the average time necessary to earn them
Associate's degree - 2 years
Bachelor's degree - 4 years
Master's degree - 6+ years
Doctorate degree (PhD, MD) - 8+ years

Junior and community colleges are short schools that usually only offer Associate's degrees and other assorted trade certificates (nursing, electrical engineering, etc.) Most people who earn an associate's degree continue their education at a college or university. Colleges offer at least a bachelor's degree and almost the higher two degrees as well, but usually don't offer associate's degrees and often don't offer trade certificates. A university can sometimes be the same thing as a college, but is usually a group of colleges on one, main campus or linked together via bus or train and over the internet. Here in Massachusetts, an institution isn't legally considered a university unless it grants multiple doctoral degrees.

I've read a number of times about that problem. The US won't face this problem due to immigration filling up anything left behing by passed on and retired baby boomers. Even though it could collapse an economy and devastate a nation, it would greatly benefit the environment and help preserve our natural resources so the next generations may rebuild in a smarter, healthier way. In other words, it might suck for our generation, but good for our great grandkids.

I feel you're pain about the finance part sucks....

***To Def***....and some others:
Here construction work can pay damn good, but not in the short run. You have to really be in along time to make what I guess where preferring to as "Damn good money in it". During the 90's this was easily done I know a guy with a high school diploma who's making over 120 grand a year in construction. Also during the 90's early 2000 era going on the road for construction could make you big bucks if you were willing to travel across the states. Now I've caught word the moneys just not there anymore the pays the same but between the rising cost of fuel and logging pretty worthless. But on an odd note I guess its where you live too that makes you consider what "Damn good money" is. I live in a poorer part of the U.S(South East).

Also here its sorta easy to land a decent job with a degree just according to which one you get. Chaves has an awesome opportunity on his hand with a Biology degree(from a four year college). Mostly business and under water basket weavers get the shitty end of the deal with there major trying to find a job(from a four year college). I mean but it is a trade off you can either make 40,000 a year busting your ass laying cement and putting up steal buildings or sitting on your ass at a desk. I guess the moral of the story is if you make "Damn good money" without a degree your gonna bust your ass for it.(The guy i know that makes 120,000 a year wakes up at 4 and doesn't return home until like 8 at night.)

Also the reason why they think SS(social security) will go broke here in the U.S. is because all of the baby boomer era individuals are retiring. Come to think of it didn't they actually raise the age of retirement now over 65 years of age to keep this from happening?

**PST***
Did you graduate or some then or flunk out?(College that is)

Did I flunk out? Now that's insulting. You're gonna make me cry. I graduated with honors, dean's list, all that good shit. I'm just sick of academia, and my track up to now just points to more of it. So I took to cooking as a change. And who doesn't want to get paid to play with fire?

And yeah, it's getting harder to find a job in America these days, rather than easier. The baby boomers here have this odd thing where whatever they enjoyed has to get ruined in time for the next generation. It's pathological or something.

Also I should point out that a PhD can be attained in less time than indicated by the snake fucker (happy?). It depends on the program. There are also just plain fewer things you can get a doctorate in than a master's - a lot of people I know are disappointed that an MFA is the furthest they can go.

Of course you can earn them more quickly, but it's more likely that you will take longer than average than shorter. The times I listed were about average.

Are we talking time from first entering a University or for the completion of that specific degree? Because I withdraw any comments (except about your reptilian sexual predilections) if you meant the former.

I can't remember if I posted this or not but why not join in the fun since I've been gone for like ages!

I'm currently studying towards a BSc (Honours) in Information Technology & Computing with the Open University. I've decided to specialise in Web Design, Web Management/Development & Computer Programming. I like Programming. Yeah I know I'm weird! lol We already know this!!!

This year is my third year & I've just started to study Computers & Processors and Java programming (two courses).

I can bore you with links if you want

From time entering university/college, of course. Otherwise it would take like 20 years to get your PhD if you got an associates degree first.

Has anybody here dormed/Is anybody here dorming? It basically sucks, besides the awesomeness of occasional privacy.

I'm looking for an apartment, because I really can't deal with these sucky "living/learning communities" after FOUR fucking semesters of putting up with it.

Nah, I snatched an apartment. Living in hostels for months on end I don't mind, but staying in one place and living in a dorm... yuck. At least you got my sympathy.

It's kind of fun reading all the comments concerning pay, since the union I'm a student member of as of 20th August last year - Sweden's engineers - does little else than nag about money. Seriously, out of all information I have ever recieved from that direction, more than ninety percent has been about opening salaries, bonuses, expected development of salaries, yadayaydayada, gimme a break. Feels pretty lame, as I simply don't have the ambition in me to sit three hours straight with twenty A4:s worth of test results trying to figure out WHY THE FUCK THAT LAST EXPONENT TURNS OUT -0.256489785 instead of a nice -0.487 or something, just for money.

I fucking HATED living in my dorm. My floor was full of complete douchebags. I almost got into a fight with someone for blasting gay ass techno music at 1am the morning before a calc test. I spent most of my time at friends apartments and on the first floor with my friends who lived there.

Well at least I feel a little better knowing that other people share my hatred. It's going to be fucking heaven moving out of here.

I have douchebags living above me. They decide to invite all their friends over at midnight, and then they continue to be loud and obnoxious while knocking shit over and shouting about dumb shit... they're probably black

LOL. there were a bunch of black people from NYC that lived in the first floor of my building. Everytime I walked through, there would be someone getting there haircut in front of the hallway mirror. It always smelled like a fucking hair salon. It would occasionally smell like blunt too throughout the entire first floor. Shit was pretty funny haha. Dorms are usually just full of immature dumbasses who are finally getting a taste of freedom away from their parents. Your best bet staying in the dorms is to room with someone you're tolerant of. I just can't do it though, i need my own room... and my pair of isolation headphones. The isolation headphones are fucking key!

I've never heard of dorm's over here in the UK. At least up here in Scotland. We all have flats with our own rooms at the very least. In the halls, it is forbidden to dorm or share a room with another. In the halls I stayed at in first year, I think there were even rules about visiting girls rooms. They were exceptionally poorly enforced if there were any. You still see the occasional dirty little squatter sneaking out of halls windows in the morning though.

I liked my dorm, but that's because I chose one that had private rooms with private bathrooms. It was converted from a 1920's hotel that, as far as anyone knew, had basically served as a bordello. It was also a 20-30 minute walk from campus. Pretty much perfect for me.

I got an interdisciplinary degree in film and literature.

You don't need to get a master's before getting a PhD. Most people just do, because, frankly, they want those twenty years of delayed adulthood.

lol wow, that's dumb.

Nice use of hahah

My history professor is pretty cool this semester, i'm studying western europe 1800's-WW2. Today we were listening to some Norwegian composers and other classical music that goes along with the time period we're studying(1880's ish). I forget the composers names because I was reading ahead to WW2 lol. That is such an interesting period of time.

Damn, I just about finished my take-home portion of my Harmony II mid-term

Instructions...

Harmonize this 16 bar melody in four-part texture, using these guidelines:
- Modulate from one key to another by mid-point, then modulate back to the original tonality by the end.
- Use two different types of modulation to move from each tonality to the next. A common chord modulation may use either diatonic or altered chords.
- Include at least one secondary function (dominant or leading tone chord) in addition to any that you use as part of a modulation.
- Add some NCTs to enliven things a bit
- Provide a harmonic analysis (including correct labels for the modulations), but do not label the NCTs.
- You will be scored on the credibility of your harmonic progressions and modulations, as well as on the accuracy of your part-writing.

That was a 3-hour bitch.

You dropping out?

I just changed my degree plan to a 4 year computer engineering degree. Now I've got to take 3 semesters of calculus and 2 semesters of Physics.

Damn dude that's all? That's the route I'm on with Software Engineering, damn it, I wish I could get a computer engineering degree ....Only one offers it in the state and it cost 18 grand per year to go there.

Shit I'm basically gonna go ahead and do a double major in Physics, shit I might grab the one in math since I'll just be two classes short anyway from actually having a degree in it...

The crazy thing about Computer Engineering and Software Engineering is on average a Software Engineer makes 25-45% more than a Computer Engineer, always found that strange...Don't get me wrong I'm not in it for the money its just to me that's always been an odd fact when you would think it would be the other way around.

Also never ever get involved in programming groups or contest groups while in your major man...those guys can get weird in this computer stuff real nerdy acting and all they wanna do or talk about are computers, it will take up an ass load of your time, and want even be truly worth it on a resume.

I've noticed that too. The reason probably isn't demand but companies you get employed by. Software engineer's work at Bungie, Adobe, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, etc.

I'm not even positive I want to work with computers. That degree is just something to put on my transcript while I search for something I enjoy.

Dude that major is pretty awesome, you get to work with some High tech stuff if you're in the right place...But to each his own.

haha I agree, Chris.

And no, Requiem, I'm not dropping out. I was just stressed that night, and had had a few beers.

But hey, I'm scoring a 5-6 minute film for a director in the CTVA program! w00t. Now I have even MORE work to do, but at least it's what I love doing, psh.

I just bought a MIDI Interface to hook my keyboard up to my MacBook Pro. Now composing music is easy

That's good to hear. I'm so fucking confused right now. College is becoming a drag for me. Honestly, I don't feel like I'm learning anything and no fields really appeal to me. I think I'm going to change my degree plan AGAIN. Probably just put it back on an AS in General Studies and check out a few biology classes and maybe a vet class. I love animals but seeing their innards might be too much for me. Last time I feed my western hognose I almost cried. He's too big for frozen pinkies now, so I feed him a rat pinky and it took him OVER an hour just to kill the little critter. Just imagine having your waist down inside of a snakes body while you try to pull yourself out of its grip. Even if you pull yourself out your legs are already being digested. :/

I wish people here in Sweden could read more comments like those about the price for going to college or university. Perhaps it could shut up a bit of the whining about having to use some of the money the state gives us every month to buy a few books now and then.
Wohoo, four more days, if all goes as planned, and I'll actually reach the last page of the calculus book. Of course, then I'll have to go back and rehearse the stuff to actually remember it, but still... that's about a thousand pages and a lot of numbers.

Hahaha, yeah. That's why I only live feed snakes that refuse to take pre-killed food. It's so much more humane for me to kill them than the snake. That being said, when I have to I have to and I don't allow myself to feel guilty about it. It's out of your control, fuck it.

That being said, if he's too big for pinky mice but big enough for rat pups than he's also big enough for full grown mice or at least hoppers, both of which you can also find frozen. If it helps your conscience, do that.

Cocktease State University is fucking me over. I got almost my core classes done, but since I wasn't allowed to take some prereqs for the construction classes I needed (you cant get into the Construction Management program 1st semester) I basically can't take a full amount of credit hours next semester. The ones that I need to take won't let me register in them or are full for some reason Advising is even more retarded because they sent me the wrong phone number to schedule an appointment, it is over my head why I can't schedule one by email.

Hard work does not pay off. I'm just a little ways away from saying "fuck it" and enlisting.

Fuck everyone here (at my school, not metaltabs) also. Everyone thinks they are some sort of hippy or gangster, or some disgusting mix between the two.

I went to college once. I had to leave, because "apparently" tea-bagging isn't an acceptable alternative to a dissertation. Well la-de-fucking-da.

Still, at least I got plenty of pussy while I was there. No wait...I got no pussy, and never have before or since, and I am in fact a 25-year-old virgin. But at least my cock's not bent and wormy. Well, at least it doesn't smell of boiled onions. At least...ahhhhh fuck this.

Don't worry, even if you are semi-sucessful and physically fit females wont even consider you. One thing I have learned in college is:

In order to get pussy, you must belong to one of these catagories:
-you act like a criminal (or are one) and look like brad pitt
-you have lots of money and can buy an escort
-you are a douchbag frat boy

See if they have it online. If not, you're fucked.

Still, you're probably better off than me.

It looks like you slept through most of that class because that's totally not true, and the women that are into that shit aren't worth you or your dick's time anyway. You don't have to be any of those things to meet or fuck women. You really only need a of couple things to attract the opposite sex: unyielding confidence and a sense of humor. Notice that looks aren't one of them. Sure, they can definitely help but I know people who look like my shit-doodles and have no problem with women. In fact, I know a dude that isn't very easy on the eyes, is poor and pretty overweight yet still pulls in more women than a supergiant's gravity.

Now, If you're going for those empty, superficial, borderline retarded Amberzombies that have no interests or talents whatsoever and are actively racing their shallow friends to see who can be the first to be diagnosed with terminal skin cancer, then yes - many do fool themselves into the 'acceptable men to fuck' guidelines because they know deep down inside that any interesting, earnest human being would never fall for their fake, desperate, sloppy carbon copy physique/intellect.

Fuck college. I dropped out for this semester because I fucking hate my classes and all of the professors are elitest cockgobblers. That, along with me spending every waking second on writing an album (WHICH YOU SHOULD FUCKING BUY), caused me to start falling pretty behind on school work so I decided to just take the remaining time off to focus on what I really want to do and to free up sometime to work more so I can have more cash to travel with. Honestly, nothing I'd really like to do with my life involves college but of course all of those things have a very precarious future, so, I'm using college as a back-up support system so I can get paid a little more until I can support myself doing what I love (WHICH IS PORN, OF COURSE!).

Well, confidence is something I have never had and my humor is not really socially acceptable, so these laws apply to me.

What you guys have to understand is that like high school, college is NOT the real world. Once you're gone you won't see many of those people anyways so they don't count. It's like that with any confined collection that breaks up whether it's leaving a school or a bar closing. Think about it. If metaltabs vanished after we all cried like little girls how many would find each other elsewhere? Although I know for a fact it's been done a few times for different reasons with other forums it's probably not common unless it's carefully orchestrated.

So if you want to meet girls that are accessible, have something in common. Even if it's just one thing. And be willing to compromise with some of the things you really don't want to do, too.

If you're that college minded -which I never was- just remember that as long as you're not dead you can still go. Time is nothing.

you know, you can always commute to college. . . ive never been to a college sports event, i dont have any clubs on campus, i dont hang out with anyone there.

for me, to be happy and social i needed a job in a social environment. thats why working on mainstreet in a record store is PERFECT for me. ive made the most friends there (that, and online) that have similar interests and are fun to talk to.

college isnt the only place to meet friends (or girlfriends), and for me, its certainly not the best, either. ive met some nice people i chat with inbetween class and whatever, but theres no reason to beat yourself up working out and trying to get with some generic girl.

actually, you might want to ask yourself if thats what you really want, anyway

You're definitely outside the U.S.

Ooh no my green friend, I live in one of the meccas of the superficial, deliciously meretricious hives: Southern California. I should have clarified, however, that the "women that are into that shit [and] aren't worth you or your dick's time" can be an exception to my theory because they are the ones generally out of reach if you don't look like the quintessential douche-bag bro, Guido, raised truck driving Keystone Light drinking tool. Those fake, lesser humans only want just that because any other partner would bring great, great shame on their tribe. Fear not! For this is a good thing. It acts as a filter so we don't have to worry about becoming involved with someone like that. But honestly, some women-skills and beer can pretty much wrangle any female. A tolerable mug and confidence can get just about any chick turnin' tricks faster than a Meretrix. Trust.

Really each male has his own game plan at the end of the day, what work works I guess and each of us take a different stance on what women truly want, which in my opinion will never be truly known because most are crazy and intolerable except for a handful I have messed with.

It really is pretty much this simple. I'm not sure I'd should be giving credence to a theory that has me on a dangerous celibate skid right now, but it's brought me considerable success in the past and should in the future as well. Not that I was ever getting laid every day with different women, but considering how broke I've always been and the fact that I don't have a car and can't even drive and wouldn't bring actually bring a girl into my house, I've had some pretty impressive stretches.

I think this is really the problem. People specifically seek out plastic barbies with the hollow center and become frustrated when they can't get one. It's really nothing more than a social thing; men aren't driven by the overwhelming force of instinct to these barbies, they are drawn to them by the reward of social acceptance and encouragement they would receive by dragging one around. That's what I think, at least. It certainly isn't natural to ever be attracted to something that looks like Paris Hilton.

3. Econ 202 recetation
4. Construction Safety Management
5. Construction Surveying
6. Construction Surveying lab
7. Military Science group study

I took public speaking last semester and it wasn't too bad. The whole class is a lot of bullshit though if you know what I mean

hey all

i study roughly 20 hours a week, the university recommends 8 hours a week but i need to study more due to my learning difficulties. but it's cool they suggest 55 - 60 hours for the whole block. when it's done i'll have done roughly 140 hours for the block. the course is split into 5 blocks, each of equal length, am doing block 4 at the moment. block 5 is revision for the exam at end of the course.

& don't forget i'm studying part-time evenings & weekends - work full-time as well.

I'm taking an introduction Media Comp class, along with Musicianship 5 and some other music stuff.

I was able to sneak in a CTVA class as one of my GE's

oh and D&Q I'm also taking a micro-econ class... I wonder if it'll be hard.
