Hahaha, yes. I can just see the epiphany:
"Holy shit... I could spend 4 years of studying this incredibly complex area of science and maybe not have to pay for this shit anymore!? Thats so easy!"
I've got about another semester until I transfer to UCLA. I was pretty stoaked on that idea about 6 months ago... now I want to get as far away from the world of academia as fucking possible.

The funny part is he'd still be wrong. Pharmacology is where its at for drug making. I used to be balls deep in erowid and usenet before I enlisted, and pretty much anyone whos made any breakthroughs in drugs was either some bone nosing mixtec shaman or a pharmacologist.

O yea and req if you don't have any ambition behind this Chimistry thing don't do it. That major is not a joke and will take LOTS of time to do good in, so start enjoying the view from a desk.

Good luck man
Just started my classes today. First class is at 9am MWF, 9:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This should suck.

9 isnt so bad. I have a class starting at 11, and by that time parking is a huge bitch. better to go earlier I think.

Just learn the rules for the formulas. That's all math is. A set list of rules that man figured out a long ass time ago. Immutable rules that geniuses discovered.

At a very basic level maybe, and by basic I mean algebraic manipulation and differentiation/integration of simple formulae, but this approach won't really get you anywhere in more advanced mathematical studies. You need quite a bit of insight at times, in particularly with formal proofs and more difficult analyses.
Furthermore, it's all very well saying "learn the rules" but it's more about learning which rules to apply at which precise moment. Even the act of learning the rules isn't as straight forward as you make it out to be; most theorems (the "rules" of mathematics, as it where) have many lemmas and corollaries to further confuse matters.

well I wish my math class was just plugging numbers into formulas and knowing rules like PEMDAS but i'm actually past that... you have to solve stuff you know...

I'm guessing he meant rules such as that for differentiating or integrating a polynomial expression, etc. With simple stuff like that it will suffice to just follow the rules.
There are innumerable rules that can be followed in mathematics, but unfortunately it is too laborious (and dare I say futile) to devise rules to determine how they all interact with one another in complex circumstances.

When mathematics is reduced to an exercise in "following the rules" it's equivalent to saying, "Colour all the sections labelled 1 with red, and all the sections with a 2 in yellow and so forth and you too can have your own Mona Lisa hanging on your wall within days!". When one spends three years studying (oftentimes fiendishly difficult) mathematics at university I'm sure you can see that your original statement denigrates the level of hard work required.

That sounds grueling... at least for me it would be. Although when I read I do read faster than most, something really has to catch my attention to read a lot in one sitting.
John, that was an unnecessary, yet very well thought out (and entertaining) explanation.

I'm not really enjoying school as much as I did the last year. I'm only really interested in calculus and business ethics, all my other classes seem like jokes. I'm considering going back to the community college after this semester to finish out my associates degree. My university doesn't give out two year degrees and it would also cost a hell of a lot more money to stay here anyways. I don't like not working while in school, It sucks not having backup cash to spend on band shirts and such. I don't want to get a job up here, that would just complicate things even more. I'd feel more comfortable commuting to school from home and having a job there.
If I do go through with this plan, which is pretty certain, I will obtain my associates degree in Business Administration. I'll look for work in the area, probably doing something in Human Resources. It'll give me a chance to save up some money, but more importantly give me time to think about what I want to do.
I'd like to look into an Audio Engineering program. I've always enjoyed recording; recording with the band, recording the band, recording myself, recording friends, or even watching friends/bands record. I have always been a sucker for In-Studio dvds, I enjoy listening to the album more after watching them recording it. So i'm considering this as a possibility. Who knows, i'll keep you guys updated.

There are some of my class mates who really needs to give this a bit of thought. Damn it, when you've applied for and been admitted to an education as an engineer, you don't waste time in calculus class asking "why should we learn this?"

our education paths are strikingly similar
post graduation : "im gonna go to comm college for 2 years"
after one year at comm college: "this sucks im going to real uni"
after first semester at colege: "this sucks i miss comm college"

Working when you're in school and away from home isn't that hard, you just have to get the right kind of job and schedule it right (I worked on a job-to-job basis as a house painter for a local contractor, which worked nicely for me). It might seem like it'll complicate things but it could easily make them so much easier. It really depends on your course load. But having some more money can easily compensate for having less free time, so long as you know how to use what free time you do have.
As for whether or not to go back to community college: it depends on why you left in the first place. If you find yourself in a proper university wanting the exact same thing you could get at community college, then you're not doing yourself any favors. It doesn't really matter where your degree's from in most cases. If you went to university because it offered something that community college didn't, and that's something you still want, then just quit being an indecisive motherfucker and go through with it. Most people struggle through college, but if you're aiming to get something specific out of it you need to keep it up, even if it sucks. It's really, really temporary.

my reason for transferring is to get my 2 year degree from the school, as opposed to just having 2 years worth of credits towards a 4 year degree here. I came here planning on staying to get my 4 year degree, but lost such interest after a few events. Right now I just want to get 2 years out of the way and then spend some time working. I don't mind that I came here though, it is worth it for me. Im enjoying living on campus, partying and meeting new people. It's definitely a lot fun but i'm not going to stay here just for that.

i didnt work much last year during school, i thought itd be too much. im glad im working this semester in terms of money though. i work about 16 hours on the weekend so i pocket around 100 a week, which really adds up. i think id have a harder time working if it was like 3 hours every day, though.

Only 100 bucks for 16 hours of week trans? What do you do?
I get more then 20 bucks an hour and I only work 12 hours a week now. Detached as an HRM advisor but already graduated so that definetly helps in the cash department.. The rest of my week goes into my research/getting another title in front of my name.
Like PST said, it's not hard to work besides a study, you just have to plan it right. I'm at my place in Utrecht from monday till friday and in the weekends I'm at my parents place. I have a flock of friends in both places so there's never a dull moment!

i work at a record shop! its nothing related to my future field, other than maybe music writing. just some part time work so i get some spending money. im looking into setting up internships in the spring of next semester, and depending how much time that takes i may or may not continue working at the record shop. im also building quite a portfolio of writing, both through school (formal papers) and through blog. i would love to work PR for a metal label or something, but i cant see that paying well.

So how's everyone doing with school this semester?
I completely fucked myself! Had to drop Accounting 2 early in the semester to free up some time for my other classes, which brought me to 12 credits. I fell behind in Calculus and it is a sinking ship now. Have my final tomorrow at 2pm, i'm gunna try and study a shitload tonight and tomorrow and hope to do decent... which even if i do decent, my chances of passing are still minimal . My other 3 classes, i'm looking at pulling in Cs, which pisses me off. I worked hard my first year for a 3.2 gpa which will drop down considerably. This should be a good motivator to try and get all A's next semester. I'm going back to community college next semester, gunna take some different classes and try to get an idea for what I want to do.

I'm doing well for my first semester. Maintaining a 3+ GPA all courses combined. If I don't make a 68+ on my Chemistry Final I'll fail the class. So I've got to study my ass off.

I'm switching to Media Composition next semester (currently Classical Guitar Performance BA). Stuff is actually getting really fucking stressful, and it's been that way for the past week or so.
Lcukily, I can blame quite a bit of this stress on myself
If I successfully move out of the dorms and into an apartment with my friend next semester, then everything should become a lot better. I've also gotta get more organized... srsly

I can't complain about my first semester at university, I even managed to slip in an extra course in astrobiology and finished it with top grade.
Soon heading back down south for the christmas holiday, which for me will be split between two jobs. But they're real good ones both so I don't complain. And it is going to feel wierd having so much daylight around.

Why are you changing from guitar? I've been taking it for a year (need one more) as a pre-req to transfer to UCLA for ethnomusicology and I love it. I totally underestimated the time and discipline it takes but there is a certain Zen involved with it that is very rewarding.

The Zen is rewarding, yes, but the Zen involved with composition is just as rewarding. Basically, I don't like always playing and learning other people's music. For Media Composition, I will start out by IMITATING other composers' music, and eventually try to define a more specific style of my own.
Really, I had to make a choice, and for me it wasn't a very hard one. Classical guitar would require an expensive guitar in order to improve, too. I will now be JoeYngVai: The Film composer! lol
Your pm made me laugh
Requiem... that's probably the best quote ever. That was a really stupid thing to do.

I'm scraping my dreams up becoming a brewmaster(too expensive for very little pay out) and applying for college in September to receive a two-year specialized diploma in the police field..after which I'm going to apply for RCMP or Halifax Regional Municipality city police.
Both start at around $46,000 and then after three years you get paid $72,000.

$72k after three years sounds pretty damn good. Have you always had an interest in becoming a cop?

No I haven't. haha, I used to live life quite the opposite from law enforcement..
I've always loved A&E cop shows though, like Investigative Reports, American Justice, Cold Case, The First 48, ect. I think being a detective would be a very interesting career.
The fact of the matter is it's a good, stable career with lots of opportunity.

Don't think becoming a cop/detective is going to get you anywhere near the interesting situations you see in those television shows. Pretty boring occupation from the looks of law enforcement around my area. How the fuck you gonna chase a guy down and you weigh 300 lbs at 5'7....due to the lack of action i think they sit at Waffle house all day and consume lard.
On another note school starts back the 13, another trivial semester spent in the study and at work. Who here majors in Sociology? Thinking about making that my double major, just would like an honest insight about it from someone on the inside.
As for you Req you're in college now? The world is truly fucking full of surprises. Whats your major?

Aren't you aware that your area isn't the only area? There are plenty of areas where crime is more frequent than others...

Get those GE classes out of the way early, man. They totally interfere with your major if you don't. That's currently what's happening to me... I try to stay focused on music and then suddenly tests and papers about poly psy fucking come out of nowhere

why not? a different teacher can make all the difference
I was thinking about taking a musicianship intro class to get arts and humanities credits out of the way, but it would be so pointless considering I did piano lessons and theory lessons as a kid.

I have a friend in it and he says all they did was learn about time signatures and basic note divisions. The higher up music classes would be alright, but I'd have to figure out how to get in those without taking the 101.

Well I know at my school you can "place out" of lower classes into higher ones. All you need to do is take a test that proves you know what you're doing. Talk to someone associated with the music Dept or something.

Yeah, I may do that. I take it you are probably majoring in music, but what specifically?
I was going to minor in music and tried for a scholarship. Played prelude in c# minor by rachmaninoff (sp?) but was nervous and it ended up sloppy.

I just switched over to Media Composition (Film/TV Score) from 3 semesters of Classical Guitar Performance.
I don't know why I didn't switch over sooner, but now at least I got all my Private Lesson & Ensemble requirements out of the way. And no more carrying my guitar for over half a mile to class!
I was seriously disliking the whole nervousness of being on stage. My original intention was to compose, too... so I really don't know what took me so long, besides not having Logic or Sibelius.

Warum will man deutsch sprechen lernen?
Das wär mir dann als Ausländer viel zu schwer.Wäre vom Schwierigkeitsgrad ungefähr gleichzusetzen mit Finnisch.
Prost, Jungs

Got signed up for a 2 month online course for Unix Operating Systems. Now I've got a full 18 hour semester.
My mother is paying the tuition and purchasing the book for my birthday.
