Alternate picking or legato?
I have noticed that there are to major ways to attain speed in your playing- Legato and alternate picking. My question to you is which to prefer and use more. I find i gravitate towards legato more in my playing, but it really depends on the person.

I try to alternate pick more.
If you can alt pick something, that should mean you can legato it because its the same thing but without picking.
So by alternate picking you are really building picking speed, picking/fretting co-ordination, and fingering speed - which is used in legato.

True, but I can actually have more left hand speed while alternate picking than by using legato alone. My hand is catching up however.

yeah legatos alot of fun when you get competent with it. but by putting alot of time working on legato, i can do it way faster then everything else and tend to use it as a crutch. i Find it helps getting your technique a bit better, because i find i really had to control my hand posture to do the bigger legato runs and now its alot easier.

there is no picking with legato, its all hammer on and pull offs.

Heres an example

Its playing several notes without picking each one.
So sliding, hammerons, pull offs, tapping, those are all legato techniques.
You could play the same thing as above by alternate picking every note aswell.
But thats the difference, i hope that helped.

I usually use legato, but I think i prefer alternate. It sounds better, I think.

overall i prefer legato, but both are essential to a good player.
it really adds something to a solo to chop and change the two styles.

i dont agree because when you alt.pick, you don't need to use your left hand to sound the notes. i find i use very different left hand movements for each technique.

Yeah, Legato really is more about right hand technique while alternate picking is more about left hand technique. If you confused, I play lefty.

You can't get away with just using either one when being a guitarist, there are times when you need to do both adequitly if you want to play a variety of things.

but alternate is pretty demanding too. but im gonna have to give this to legato

I def alt pick way more than legato , Id like to do more legato than I do but being a older style player , I tend to alt pick and sometimes just down pick ala Metallica , You do get a nice chunk going with strict down picking but its easy to develop shit habits , Its best to try both techniques to be well rounded . ZaKK alt picking , Dime legato , but both ass kicking , So its all good.

If I'm playing blues or acoustic style things, usually I use more legato. For heavier, more distorted things, I tend to go with more alternate picking...but I still agree with the guy above that said you can't really get away with doing just one or the other.
