I have to go with death. It pretty much runs the gamut from Cryptopsy and brutal to Cynic and technical to In Flames and melodic.

There is no best metal genre. People have opinions you know. This thread is just going to start a pointless arguement.

Wait, are you joking? Obviously your favorite genre will the best genre for you. There has to be an "Your favorite genre" thread floating around somewhere that he could have searched.

...Oh the irony.
There is no best genre. It cannot be measured. But my favourite is the all encompassing genre known as Death Metal.

Meh, I don't like Death Metal. It's too aggressive for me. The guitars sound pretty shit too. Black metal is too scary, I mean what kind of normal person sings about Satan? Thrash metal, well, I used to like it, but when I went to a Megadeth concert I got punched in the face in the mosh pit, so it's a big no-no.
My favourite metal genre is probably nu-metal. Y'know, something along the lines of Slipknot. Their latest album is great.

I'm listening to about 40% math metal ( Dillinger, Gorguts, Meshuggah ) and 40% technical death metal ( Severed Saviour, Nile, Cryptopsy ), and 20% 'experimental' ( Today Is The Day, Behemoth, and once again, Meshuggah ).

Not to be the asshole here, but, it is "thrash" metal, not "trash". Don't want to sound all jerkish, but, I just want to clarify that.

I'm listening to about 50% Experimental [TITD, The Locust etc.] 30% Black Metal [Tsjuder, December Wolves] and about 20% Death Metal [Incantation, Immolation]
Thats just recently though. My favourite genres are Black and Death mostly.

I think that's a Scandanavian thing. They have no "th" sound so when they try to pronounce it, it sounds like "trash" or "frash". I think.

Why does every forum have this stupid question (so to speak) every 3-4 months? It's not like there's EVER going to be a correct answer and at a board like this you're guarenteed to get one of each kind.

Their is no "best kind" of metal. Opinions are subjective ot the individual, making comments like "black metal sucks because it's so simple" rather insipid and useless. I happen to like Black Metal the most, and it's not because I'm impressionable it's because it's damn good music. I also like Iron Maiden quite a bit, and the entire myriad of metal for that matter. I just always fall back into the black metal scene because it is the most communicative form of metal regarding recursive aesthetics.

While logically there is no one best genre, and listing one only perpetuates a dumb argument, thrash. Yeah, I'm gonna go with thrash.

Sodium is even less reactive than the aforementioned since it is higher up in group 2 of the periodic table. I'm sure it was Potassium, and for that matter, Magnesium as well. [We used to have small strips of these that our science teacher told us to drop in water and time how long it took to dissolve]. Hmmm, might be losing my (lead) marbles.

My personal fave genre would currently be technical death metal, ala Necrophagist, Martyr, and, to a certain degree, Augury (although they do have heavy black metal influences...)
The new Nile CD (I felt) bordered on the technical side of things, especially compared to their earlier stuff. It might not qualify as Tech. DM, but it's definately in that cross-over region.
Cheers.

I would have to say my favorite is Death/Thrash. Sometimes there's nothing better than fast, thrashy death metal. My second favorite would have to be Death/grind (cryptopsy, cephalic carnage, etc.)

i only like certain bands that are the best the genre has to offer, but not the genre as a whole. this goes beyond metal as well as i listen to noise and hardcore and all the wierd shit inbetween.
what i hate most is black metal snobs, not to insinuate this about anyone posting here. but there are some folks i know who are wierd about the shit. conversations about music get real awkward and challenging with these people, i never been condesended to in a way these people do. people get real one dimensional about shit, and totally intolerant to anything else.

man, hard rock kicks ass too, like BLS and stuff.
+ "the usual" trash (like Exodus and Slayer) and death (like Children Of Bodom)
but I still have faith that Metallica is the best band ever. I mean ever.
but that's just me.

Pirate metal? Next you'll be telling me that there's a genre called Black Metal. Sorry, my mistake, we all know that Black Metal would be an extremely silly genre.

I think I have heard people calling a determined part of black metal for "dark metal". Not sure exactly how it sounds though.

Bah, I was right! All of the Earth Metals in group 2 are very reactive when immersed in water! I knew it!

Yea, and they used it because they saw black as a representation of darkness and evil. I would think that was rather obvious.

For me its technical death metal and doom metal (drone/black/death/avantgarde)...and some depressive or high-speed black metal.

Don't know if I posted in this thread already.
I think death, thrash, and melodic. There's not one better than the other to me. I like to hear bands that utilize elements from many genres.
