I can play it but not at his speed. I haven't really practiced it enough to actually play it fast. It is one hell of a stretch though.

Wow that sounds great... Can anyone publish any tab forms of how to learn some of the actual playing, such as the first fast example (that sounds like "woooo! you found a treasure" from many RPG games...)

Here's a tab for those who don't have it.
e|------------------------------------9-10-14-17--|
B|----------------------------9-10-14-------------|
G|---------------------6-7-11---------------------|
D|--------------6-7-11----------------------------|
A|--------4-5-9-----------------------------------|
E|--4-5-9-----------------------------------------|
It's a nice stretch. You can pretty much play it over any major/minor chord progression.

I find this a hard stretch (to play fast)
|-------7h12p7h10p7----
|----8---------------8--
|-7--------------------7
|-----------------------
|-----------------------
|-----------------------
I can do it, but not fast. I have trouble with shit like that.
And in the next part of that song it has a hammer on from 5 to 10, which is harder.

I just made those stretches without warming up and I wouldn't say that I had long fingers at all.
My advice to anybody that finds this difficult is to perform finger exercises regularly - you'll soon be hitting that 9 no problem.

Frederik Thordendal does something very similar to this gothic octave in the solo to Gods Of Rapture. His fingerings are different though... here's how he does it:
Code:
|--------------------------------------9-13-15~-|
|---------------------------------9-13----------|
|-----------------------6-10/12-8---------------|
|------------------6-10-------------------------|
|---------4-8/10-6------------------------------|
|-----4-8---------------------------------------|

I can make the stretch pretty easy as well.
Sidenote: is that one of those videos where he goes "now just play this fret and that scale and things, like this: *insane sweeping shred of death*. Now I know this is an instructional video, but you should be able to do this too as a warm-up: *reverse insane shred of sweeping death* Thanks for buying my video." ?

There is a way of playing that lick that would require no stretching at all.
Unfortunately it wouldn't be as cool.

Wow. You make music theory sound like an insanely complex aspect fo guitar playing, as if all will be mentally challenged to find an 'alternative' way of playing it. A good tip is to remember the frets are indeed notes, not just numbers (sarcastically ina humerous way:P)

Garr man, give us time to reply! Also post more in your thread than a link and it may entice cretins to view it.
Good video there, am tempted to learn some of it, though I desperately need bastard reverb for a nicer lead tone. Is it me being confused, or does the enck appear different to the normal design? At first I thought scalloped, but now it looks like excessivly large fret-wire?
As for the hair cut... Champion.

i prefer sliding from the 4th fret to the 5th then hammering onto the 9th fret.
too easy really.
and before anyone moans about me not playing it "right", i hang my guitar low, like hetfield does or used to. and it sounds more interesting to me.

I wasn't impressed with the song..
And the tone was horrid.
God forbid I dislike the video!
Mr. Lynch has never really been a favorite of mine though.

George Lynch is a great player , He was Dokken , There are other players I like better but Lynch got good chops . I saw him play with Yngwie , both put on excellent show , Yngwie the better player by far .
The tone on that tape is from the 80s thats the way the 80s sounded.

I think his tone was very good ( for an 80's hair metal sound ), from what we can gather from a recording like that. "Good" and "Bad" tone is subjective, when you're talking about the caliber of equipment he's using ( custom Kamikaze and a Marshall ). And especially someone on his level, whether or not you like the tone, he knows what he wants, and does'nt need a "lesson".

I liked that video, I prefere players like him who keep a bit of a melody going rather than just sweep, sweep, sweep, yeah lets sweep some more, gets boring.
I love the long but "practical" hair cut ( big square shape cut out the front).

It's not the principle of "playing it right" it's the fact that there is a difference in the sound and therefore the potential/use of the scale in different areas. There will always be times when every note needs to be played for that choppy sound (in my opinion in slower areas/moreprominant runs) whereas hammering andlegato sounds better for more graceful and calm runs. There isn't such a thing as 'the correct way', just there's a variety of ways in which the scale/riff may be played to alter the tone and dynamics in a way that benefits the section the most. The moral is to learn stuff in as many ways as possible, increasing your versatility. Easier said than done though, and at timesmay often seem a waste of time. The biggest part of learning guitar is that practicing things you find harder until you find them easy is the fastest way to increase technique.
I'mnot picking fault at all, but with your suggested way, I find it harder to achieve clarity in the notes (fretting each means you can 'accent' and prevent duff notes/excessive and unwanted ringing). Guess I should practice it more though
Anyone having any luck making anything interesting with this scale by the way? This seems a nice filling lick to stick between things, albeit a bit empty sounding
Code:
e------------------------10-14-10---10-9
b--9-10------9-10-14-------------14------10-9
g--------11------------------------------------11-7-6~

Haha! What an analysis
Check out some stuff by Chris Impelliterri, for both a horrific haircut and a mysteriously bad playing style that somehow works wonders for him. I have one of those shitty instructional videos by him somewhere.
Anyway...

Chris Impelliteri! What a hero...definately one of the worst hair cuts in metal...as for his technique, all pentatonics and he hardly ever uses his little finger on one of the shitty 80's instructional vids i used to own!
Can't remember which album it is but it opens with "father forgive them". That is a kick ass album! Hair metal at its best...L.A. Guns times ten!

One hundred years have gone and men again they came that way,
To find the answer to the mystery,
They found his body lying where it fell on that day,
Preserved in time for all to see,
No brave new world, no brave new world,
Lost in this place, and leave no trace.

Now that is fucking ridiculous. Garr1...punk, you should know better than to make more than one thread about the same fuckin' thing. I'll merge these for you--next time I'll just close your redundancy.

Eh? I thought he made two threads about different subjects? One with George Lynch's "Gothic Octave" and one with his "Mr.Scary" video.

btw i dont play the pulloff ... i play it with open a and the rest of the notes on the a string so you can just stay in 2nd fingering position and dont have to switch to 4th or 5th... much easier imo .. can tab it if you dont understand what i mean

deifiler, youre spot on.
i think approaching music with the mindset of copying a piece absolutely is just plain boring.
making a piece sound your own doesnt necessarily come down to just phrasing, but involves technique also.
i like to slide into and out of notes and use lots of legato to make it sound more complex and snaky. i call this dynamics.
i find it interesting to hear how different musicians approach the same piece of music yet leave their personal stamp on it without sacrificing the original.
i think its all good.

I merged them, can't you read?
And yes, though they are differnt videos, they're the same damn subject/person. We don't need 80 separate fucking video threads of the same person.
