Ok first of all THIS ISNT ME but it's pretty much my setup + a better cab. (530 -----> Peavey Classic Series Poweramp...it's a 120/120, as opposed to my 60/60) through a Vader cab. It pretty much sounds exactly like my setup, but less "up front" than mine sounds. It's recorded through a crap $30 mic apparently.

yeah there's a bit of low end lacking in it however that might be the fault of this guys' mic, because i can get more low end easily than this clip, despite having a very trebley-voiced cab.

Maybe this guy just cut his lows... The recording doesn't do the amp justice, I'm sure it must sound a million times better in person or on a direct recording.

those recordings don't do the amp justice. probably recorded with a vocal mic.

Even then it still sounds good to me.

don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound 'horrible'. I'm just saying the amp sounds better in real life.

my 620 preamp sounded better though my peavey 50/50 and 1960 cab. in real life that is, if I'de use the same mic to record it, it would probably sound worse then this. that's what I hate about those sound clips, it's really hard to tell how it would sound in real life, there's just so many variables to those recordings.

Hey def is my 920 poweramp similar to the poweramp section in any of the ENGL heads?


I realize its hard to go by what the clips sound like but with a 530 hooked up to my 920 and a sonic maximizer in the mix i should be able to get some even ballsyer tones then that clip right?

similar, not really. because it's running on EL34's. which I prefer above 6l6's, haha. my savage 60 runs on EL34's and that's the only Engl head that runs on EL34's. rest are all 6l6, kt88 and 5881's.

if it sounds anything like my savage 60, it won't have ANY problem sounding more ballsy. problem with this recording is that it sounds 'thin' because the bass seems to be cut out, either that or not recorded that well.

I imagine a 530 and a 920 won't have any problems going more brutal then my tiny savage. that 920 poweramp is a beast, I've played my 620 with it when I bought it. Unfortunatly the guy had a 520 so he didn't sell the poweramp. (they're rare over here.)

god damn, i think it sounds damn good. It might not do it justice, but that clip is enough to sell me.

also im getting kind of skeptical about my 920 poweramp, i dont have a preamp so i can't really test it out now, but i tried lining out from my crate head into it and it didnt work at all.

How can i test to make sure this poweramp is working without a Pre amp?

EDIT- I think its more palm muting during trem picking that i suck at.

Are you getting a 530? and what kind of BBE you got?

Plug it in, open it up, touch things until you get shocked, then you know it works.

i dunno man, i would say just bring it to your local guitar shop and test it on a preamp there. Or if you have a pedal (like a shitty metalzone or somthing) you could plug your guitar into the pedal and run the pedal into the power amp and then into a cab. A distortion pedal like the metalzone is just a simple/shitty pre-amp (i think ). xDx was tellin me how he ran a metalzone through his poweramp one time

i ghetto rigged a preamp, i took my drummers old kramer 20w practice with his mt-2. used the line out into my cs800. basically using the preamp of the practice amp, but the mt2 as the distortion source.

not saying it sounded great, but when you're in a band the show must go on. we werent going to stop practicing for 2 weeks while i waited for my new preamp.

basically you're trying to get a line level signal into the poweramp or you wont be able to hear shit.

for the bbe, i suggest trying the 530 without it first.

i'm saying if you buy a 530, try it without the bbe first to see how you like it. you may find you don't need the bbe.

Yeah, definately get a feel for the "natural" tone first. If you REALLY need to "fill" something in there then by all means get the BBE, but if you're satisfied with it then why not take that money you were gonna put towards the BBE and get yourself um...a nice rack case?
