I've read that weight gainers to be absolute crap. They are filled with cheap ingredients and simple sugars. This is a blog from an admin on bodybuilding.com that is pretty useful when it comes to sports supplements.

They're to fill the void of calories when your throwing on size. Try consuming 3200-3500 perfectly balanced good cals every day... almost impossible. You say "weight gainers" as if they're all the same. You get what you pay for. You might want to pay attention to the fact that most bodybuilders are very opinionated on the things they use, and he is expressing his opinion on it, nothing more.

This is true. I totally agree. This guy's opinions aren't the be all end all in my mind either.
I just ordered some ON Casein protein powder. Anyone else have experience with casein protein powder?

Yeah. 1/3 of a cup of the shit well mixed in 16 ounces of water is like drinking warm roofing tar as far as viscosity goes. Have fun.

Either stirred with a big spoon or mixed with a handheld blender. The shit I have has raspberry/strawberry or something flavoring and it's completely tolerable tasting, it's just that it's rather thick. With the shit I have, two regular scoops or 1/3 cup is 50 grams of protein.

Ahh ok I thought so. Shaker cups work the best I find..they work as well as a blender without the tedious cleanup.
It seems like mixing casein with milk is probably a bad idea then.

Just grab some five hour energy and go to the gym. Works for me fine, but then again i just can't drink all that powdery, sugary, high in carbs, and protein crap. If i drink anything i just get a cup of milk, throw in an egg, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and stir. Then i drink my mixed slime down.
I mean if you wanna gain body mass why not just over eat? Go to McDonald's and order 5 Big Macs and a Large fry, cheaper and better tasting. Some of that shit can really do you more harm than good. I've seen times with others it actually held them back more(slowed advancement). I just can't understand if your not trying to get huge and nasty looking why take the stuff?
Also any body know anything that can actually give you more energy to work out? I get fatigued so bad while working out. I've tried b12 vitamins nothing. The bad side to the Five hour energy is when i go to bed at night I'm physically tired, but my brain refuses to cut off. I want energy but I don't want something that's going to keep me up for half the night. Those damn diet supplements suck as well i cant stand the jitters, makes you look like an epileptic .

Maybe try a Nitrous Oxide pre-workout drink like Gaspari Superpump 205, NO Shotgun, or Controlled Labs White Flood which doesn't have caffeine like the other two.
I may just start taking a caffeine pill before the gym after I'm done my tub of Superpump. I want to be spending my money on creatine(I'm thinking Controlled Labs Green Mag) rather than a pre-workout drink. Yes, I've dissed it in the past..but this is now.

Redline has always worked for me. In fact, sometimes it works too well. I usually just sip about 1/2 a bottle before the heavy set of the primary lift I'm targetting that day, and that's enough, but if I'm feeling brave I'll chug a little more. Lotsa times it leaves me feeling lightheaded in the middle of a set, and I kinda get the feeling that my heart hates me everytime I take a sip, but whatever, not that hard to just work past it.
I've actually blacked out on some heavy shoulder presses a few times, but that didn't have anything to do with the redline, so that's a story probably best left for another time.

Just a spoon. In all honesty, I usually don't give a shit about how it mixes. If it helps me, that's enough really. Most of the time I just end up scooping the chunks off the walls of the cup and eating it like some kinda yogurt.
Appreciate the claim to fame. Lord knows it's probably the only one I've ever had on this site.

Yeah and you'll have so much saturated fat in your system you won't be able to digest proteins for a week.

Dude that's the WORST. I hate that lumpy gummy part that doesn't mix. I get a chunk when I'm drinking it once in a while and it makes me gag

Jumping rope is great, and not just for endurance but it gives me a killer calf workout too.
Ah, and about those carb loading days... how about a 29" meatball and cheese sub? Just downed one in anticipation of squat day tomorrow. Yum.

First thing i'm gonna say is that Im not gonna come in here with the attitude that I KNOW EVERYTHING!!!!.... Because i sure as hell don't.....but i will throw down some suggestions. You can try them, or tell me why you dont think its right. Doesnt matter.

I dont know your stats or what your trying to accomplish, but its best not to consume anything within 1.5-2 hours before you hit the gym, you want your body to be catabolic when your lifting, so you basically don't want the carbs in your system because they are gonna prevent your muscles from taking the full abuse. But, when your done lifting, you should instantly slam down something with massive quick burning carbs to shock your body into anabolics again. Basically, if your not destroying your muscle, it isn't going to build.
Whole wheat pasta's are slow burning carbs (same with casein protein [cottage cheese and shit]) and should be used when your not gonna be eating for a while.... say before bed. Even whole wheat bread vs white bread. White should be considered the same as a carb drink, but whole wheat bread is more of a slow burning carb. BUT If your trying to lose weight, disregard what i just said.
Try an NO booster to take the place of carbs when going to the gym. I tried Horsepower and it was shit, makes your skin crawl, get itchy and not really much of an energy boost. I switched over to MuscleTech NOVapour - THIS one is good. I dont care if you like or dislike muscletech, it works for me.
But i said enough for now!!!!!!

You're replacing carbs with caffeine, not an "NO" booster. Nitric Oxide as a workout supplement is so retarded...yet people keep buying into it. You're not having "SUPER FUCKING CHARGED" workouts from having higher levels of nitric oxide in your bloodstream...it's from having various stimulants. Nitric Oxide is hardly even bioavailable orally and any NO "boosters" or things that garner ATP via NO synthase like amino acids like arginine are in basically everything you eat. It's amazing how much supplement companies can tap into the placebo effect. Of course people will see physiological changes if they work out. Most supplements I see make absolutely no sense biomolecularly speaking....yet they still make sweet claims like "increase your muscle growth and testosterone by 4355%!!!!!"

Yea, we do that quite a lot at dance school, and don't think that the teacher is happy with simple jumping in your own pace, oh no. Cross hands everyother jump, faster, cross feet every other jump, faster, and to the beat! Pretty good exercise. I'm having a restart-semester right now, but as I'm applying to the show group this autumn, I can see the jumping rope coming flying. Like a stuka bomber.

As said before on the last page "most bodybuilders are opinionated on what they use and believe". Thanks for proving my point.
And on top of it, you agree that it works to improve your workout with extra energy and vascularity, but then you go on to say how much its bullshit and doesnt work. Just for the record, its not simply caffine.
Your one of those idiots that nobody can talk to. Opinionated and dumb as shit.

It's true. Most of my weight is in my legs, hips and lower back. My upper body is pretty ordinary, now maybe a little less so than before. I am 5-10kgs heavier than most of the old photos I have.
However, I can pick up a car that makes my dangly bits hard.

I never said it makes you more "vascularized" and I never said it was JUST caffeine. I'm just saying that you're spending 50 bucks on a tub of powder. You could spend that 50 on food sources that'd be more effective and probably more healthy for you. I bet bumping a few lines of coke before working out would give you a lot of energy too. I mean it's the same concept...why provide glycogen to your muscles when you can just take a ton of CNS stims so that you can't feel anything anyway and so that you have a neurochemical techno rave in your head? Why use healthy nutrition ...when you can use HARDCORE nutrition?
I went to the store yesterday and was about to get protein powder and vegetables...but then I saw a tub of powderized "Hardcore Super-Advanced Proteinables." It has like eight hundred hardcore ingredients that are scientifically proven to make my cock huge and my biceps more huge. I took the shit and within a half hour, I had the most hard-fucking-core testicular-swelling, testosterone festival of a workout ever seen. This stuff is good for you too because it has real vegetable extracts and tons of ANTIOXIDANTS. Furthermore it has OMEGA FATTY ACIDS. What's better, it has this new substance that's like carbs, but not really carbs, so I can eat it and be so fucking shredded without having to eat carbs because carbs just are stored as fat anyway. Did I mention it's rich in ANTIOXIDANTS? I hear that shit is mad good for you.

Dude, weight gainers are pure shit...
I'm an ectomorph and a hard gainer. I honestly think it just takes more than just lifting heavy to get big,- you gotta lift faster, more explosive, rest more, and eat healthy. Not necessarily load up on carbs, but have a balanced amount of protein, aminos, cards, fats, minerals, and vitamins in your daily diet.
It works for me... Shit, I went from weighing 130 lbs to weighing 180 lbs in less than 2 years with serious lifting. I fucked up when I got back on drugs about a year ago and didn't eat much, this put me back at 160. But no worries, I'm hitting the gym again and eating tons. I'm at 165 now, another 25 lbs to reach my goal.

I may just start taking a caffeine pill before the gym after I'm done my tub of Superpump. I want to be spending my money on creatine(I'm thinking Controlled Labs Green Mag) rather than a pre-workout drink. Yes, I've dissed it in the past..but this is now.

Stay away from that shit. You know what you need? 8 hours of sleep, a small meal with enough carbs, protein, and calories to provide energy for your workouts, and a shot of caffeine. That NO stuff sucks, it does give a massive pump, but that shit is useless in the end.
Nitrous Oxide? ....Beware, a lot of people hear don't know what L-Arganine does to people who like to say they get an occasional cold sore... For those of you who get "cold sores," I do not recommend taking any supplements with high amounts of L-arganine or else it will worse the frequency of getting a cold sore.
p.s. It's not a cold sore, it's herpes... Just saying.

Bones - You're right about the NO pre-supplements. Caffeine and placebo effect. I'm not going to buy them again. Eat well, Sleep Well, Protein powder(s), fish oil capsule, a good multi vitamin and creatine is all you really need. Everything else is pretty much crap.

I bought a Ross Enamit shirt a few months ago. That dude has some seriously innovative training methods. It shows, too. I think he posted a video sometime recent of him deadlifting around 600 pounds at a BW of what, 175? I think it was a trap bar lift, but still, crazy shit for someone who doesn't even train the lift.

Question about vitamins:
Can I take a multi-vitamin(with a small percent of b12) & also a b12 50mg pill twice a day without causing adverse effects? I usually let the b12 dissolve under my tongue for that good burst of energy all at ones...
Also does the fish oil capsules help anyone out and make any difference for you guys?

Yes. You can take as much b12 as you want. There has been no evidence of any harm from too much b12. I did some research on it a little while ago when I wondered the same thing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_oil
I noticed ever since taking it my general mood has been more positive. While looking it up just a minute ago, this study seems to suggest why.
Studies[6][7] were conducted on prisoners in England where the inmates were fed seafood which contains Omega-3 Fatty acids. The higher consumption of these fatty acids corresponded with a drop in the assault rates. Another Finnish study found that prisoners who were convicted of violence had lower levels of omega–3 fatty acids than prisoners convicted of nonviolent offenses. It was suggested that these kinds of fatty acids are responsible for the neuronal growth of the frontal cortex of the brain which, it is further alleged, is the seat of personal behavior.
Definitely pick it up. It's cheap and very good for your overall health.

Got to change my statement i meant to say was b6 50mg not b12. I tried b12 under the tongue and i felt no different, so i followed another pharmacist advice and used b6 under the tongue, really you can feel the rush stay with you for along time, its no mind thing.
I've had a guy tell me ones if you can get a doctor to prescribe you B Complex with potassium, you'll be a hell of a happy man for many days to come.

i'll have to look into that pr0az.
i can't wait to heal and get back in the gym. my arm is shrinking so much. my left arm is actually bigger than the cast around my right arm, and there's plenty of room in the cast. I've been taking BCAA's to try to prevent as much atrophy as possible.

I think I payed less than $200 (US) for a 7 foot bar (45lbs.) and 300 lbs. worth of plates. I had previously purchased four 45lb. plates, and this set came with two more, plus a bunch of smaller ones (35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5). I was immediately regretful that I didn't check online for a better deal first, but when I did, it looked like I made out just fine at Dick's.

Damn, that's not bad at all! If I can remember, most new 45lbs plates at retail stores around here are around $50 each!
I bought an E-Z curl bar several years ago and that was around $40 for itself.

Congrats on the PR.
For whatever reason, overhead presses just don't mesh well with me. It might have something to do with my breathing patterns on the lift, but I always feel lightheaded whenever I'm hoisting heavy weight over my head. I've even blacked out twice on the lift. Chugging a bottle of redline prior to lifting doesn't help either, oy.

I was unfortunately in a car accident and had to get spinal surgery. My only fitness for the next several weeks will include lying on my back and not lifting anything that weighs more than 5 lbs

Ugh, blacking out with that much weight over your head, that sucks Push pressing is actually my strongest suit...
I've been working on my cars for the last 2 months since the weather is so nice and all, I haven't done a real training or cardio in weeks and I seriously need to get back under the bar

I've been back in the gym for about a month now and working out at home and I'm almost back to where I was when I got cut off from the gym last summer. Deadlift is back up to 365 (previous max was 385). Leg press is getting there, though I can't remember how much I put up last time. Bench press is taking the longest, I'm still struggling around body weight, and it may be some time before I surpass that.

Squats, leg presses, calf supersets, leg extensions, and leg curls. Maybe i overdid it a bit today. My legs won't stop shaking when i walk. The joys of getting back into a routine. ugh.

Its a great feeling, as long as there is no other work to be done. I haven't done squats in forever, now that its summer I will be biking and running more, something that I have ignored for way too long.

I signed up for the gym last week, and it's been since december probably, and after breaking my arm and doing nothing for 2 months I'm pretty out of shape and lot a lot of muscle, but just from being back in the gym for a week, i've already gained 10lbs. Seems a bit crazy but I have been eating like a horse and working out as hard as i could with one arm a fuckin lot weaker and painful than the other. Barbell exercises like bench press and whatnot and pretty much pointless when one arm is so much stronger than the other, and when i do dumbbell exercises, i feel only the weak arm is getting the workout, but i guess there's not much i can do until it catches up in strength. The slight nerve bruising that i have is preventing the muscles from building back up in certain places, like the top of the forearm and the lower tricep right above the elbow. I guess it just takes time.

My friend wants me to learn jeet kune with him, be his sparing partner and share similar diets. I'll probably take him up on the offer. I've been looking around town for karate lessons but failed to find any instructors.

I'm finally starting to gain some weight back since my injury. Weighed in at 178.5 today. I was 165 when i got back in the gym. My first day squatting about a month ago i strugged with 185 for maybe 6-8 reps. Now I can max around 300. maybe more if my gym actually had a neck pad for the bar, instead of some plastic clip on device that sorta cups your neck and traps. fuckin hurts. Muscle memory is great though.

damn I think I weighed more than you did for some time, but of course thats not really fair from your point of veiw.
I never used a pad or anything for squats, even in the upper 200's it didn't hurt too much at all, the plastic thing hurt like shit when I tried it.

I always had to use a pad. The bar always hurt my neck. Maybe i don't position it right on my traps or something.
The most i ever weighed was 205. When i broke my arm, i was somewhere around 185, cause i wasn't working out around then. I always drop weight real quick when i stop lifting. So i lost about 20 pounds from the injury, which seems crazy, but i guess that's what happens when you're basically forced to sit around and not move for weeks on end.

If you don't want to waste your time, it basically says fatasses are fat not because of hard work, but genetics. lol.

If they struck a nerve they did their job. That's what they're all about. I didn't watch but a minute of it. Grain of salt. You know that not everyone has small hips or a big chest. Part of that is genetic, but whether you're eating a grease laden donut diet or a lean chicken one that's going to make a difference in how you wear it.

I squatted 335 at one point with no pads or anything. I know your traps are larger than mine Truth, I think you're holding the weight wrong or something

kicked it up a notch on the squats yesterday and got 300 up for 3 good reps. Went to go to the gym today and found out they're closed for the rest of the week for 4th of july. What the fuck.

Fuck, you are really going to get me started.
its not the truth, I used to look like something that came out of a concentration camp, then over the past two years I started lifting heavy and eating to the point of nausea. I gained quite a bit of muscle, and it wasn't as easy as buying a gym membership and doing some shitty ass pushups a few times a day. It was quite a bit of hard work. I'm no "mesomorph" or "naturally inclined to build muscle" or whatever psuedo-science bullshit some self proclaimed asshole came up with. Exuses are gay, and people are lazy shits.
Most of this is just our culture. I see shitty as pretty boy personal trainers always teaching skinny kids to do some lame ass dumbell movements, calf raises, and god knows what useless garbage. Then they make the fat ones do some shit like half-lunges with a 5 lb dumbell or something. All the good stuff like barbell deadlifts, squat, rows, ect. are not really well known to a lot of these noobs, and those are the excersizes that will get you somewhere, rather than doing some tricep extension machine and curls. And if your fat its just so obvious I don't wan't to talk about it.

i understood your point, drawn. I've seen a lot of really fat people lose a ton of weight, and i've seen a lot of fat people diet right and workout hard and not lose anything. Genetics does play a big part in weight loss, but that doesn't mean some people just can't lose weight. I believe it is true that people cannot naturally change the shape of their body, but only make it bigger and smaller. There are people out there that can diet and workout religiously and never be ripped. And of course there are people the exact opposite, who can eat whatever and not workout and never be fat. But I think Drawn's point is that there are a lot of fat people who "workout" by doing the very minimum and blame the lack of results on genetics. Anyone can gain or lose some weight with effort, but the overall shape of your body is something your born with and cannot change, only change the size, not shape. Make sense? It's a hard thing to put into words.

For women there's the apple vs pear shape as far as torso, but there's different upper body shapes with some having a broader shoulder and some narrower. That's something that's genetic, but the narrowness can be broadened with movements. I know most of the stuff I wore 10 or 15 years ago before I started lifting #10 cans over my head a couple times a week won't fit across my shoulders anymore. I couldn't even get both arms into them I'd broadened out so much. Good for strength, but bad for wardrobe. The bones don't change, but the muscles do.
Bob's doing 2 different styles of training now and he was talking about the new way he does squats. It will increase his hip area so there will be the broad shoulders and narrow waist. I told him he just wanted to have his mother's big butt. I asked if he was after an hourglass figure which he agreed and I told him he'd look like Marilyn Monroe. He hadn't thought of it that way.

actually got weighed today, still 175 and that's good because I haven't been trying to lose weight, and I haven't lost any despite all the running and biking I've been doing.
I want to put on some more weight however while getting better at running/endurance...might be hard. I need I better weight regiment also I think.

I'm at 175 also. I was actually as low as 163 as of about a week and a half ago, but in the past week I put on about 10 pounds just from working out in the basement on one of those cheap universal workout machines. I can't do nearly what i could in a gym, but I can manage to get a decent workout on the thing with a little dedication and creativity lol

Yeah, it's actually been making me pretty sore, so I must be doing something right. It'll hold me over until I get into an actual gym

I'm sure some is water weight, though what would cause me to hold extra water? I haven't gotten back in the gym yet, I'm still doing the whole at-home thing, but it's working for now.

I wouldn't say extra water, but I know there is something about how when you are more active you will have more water weight. Kinda like when you get sick, you lose weight but its mostly water.

ive been lifting about 2-3 days a week, cause it's the most i can do without severe pain in my arm, but it seems to be working quite well. I'm up to a solid 188lbs now.
