FBS your lack of a response makes me think its ok to use a leg machine while im waiting for my arms to regain strength inbetween chest pressing

also does doing a punchup at the end do any good

It's been implied to me many times that if you work out one thing, leave it to work something else out, come back 30 minutes later to do it again, is bad--like it weakens you. I don't believe it, for the same reason I never believed you guys when you say I over-train.

A bit late but i'd say lifting with a buddy can be great for your workouts, depending on who it is. When I see two guys standing in front of the squat rack talking leisurely, and then squatting down to 15 degrees with 315 pounds it really pisses me off, and it's clear they have no fucking clue what they are doing. Personally, I don't have anybody serious enough to work out with, but i'd love to have another powerlifter with me.

It would just be handy to have a spotter and somebody to yell at you all the time. I was reading on a powerlifting forum and one guy has this huge trainer that is completely out of his mind. To warm him up, he'd actually start punching him, just to get him psyched up. He then KICKED HIM IN THE CHEST. I don't know about you guys, but i'd be breaking some new personal records if I had just gotten kicked in the nipple. While this guy was squatting the guy would actually threaten to punch him in the stomach if he didn't do it right.

I know FBS does, but who else here powerlifts?

It's a matter of priorities. You get the best portion of any workout done to start with. If you're going to use what's actually a very hard protocol, you hit it up and get it out of the way first. Always.

That and leg pressing is a fucking stupid exercise which flexes the spine the wrong way and you shouldn't do it at all.

I hope everybody here is deadlifting and squatting. Benching is good too, but if you want to put on some serious mass, hit the big three lifts. I see way too many curl jockeys taking up space in my gym.

Has anybody ever taken ammonia caplets before a workout? They are supposed to clear your mind and help you focus a lot more. Sounds pretty crazy to me.

for a long time ive been focusing on losing fat but im literally pounds away from being fatless so now im focusing way more on increasing weights. i dont mind if i dont gain much muscle as long as i get stronger (however ive gained quite a bit of muscle lately without much effort)

Nah. I just pitch mainly. And when I do hit running isn't a huge issue. I'm in decent cardio shape as is, without any outside work.

perfect is in the eye of the beholder but most can agree on what it isn't. kevin smith, michael moore...i guess i have something against fat filmmakers. the ideal body is different for what you want. e.g.-a runner doesnt want to be all hulked up and muscular and a body builder doesnt want to be slender and spritely but both are 'perfect'. so if you really care i can change what i said previously to "ideal" body, but i dont really think it matters

it was 14% at last checking, which was more than a month ago. and that sounds like one form of 'ideal' body type exactly as i mentioned. i dont have a specific goal at the moment other than lose any excess fat and continue to increase resistance, which is about as normal as it gets.

Strength is a funny quality. It is affected by many things - total muscle size (fibre number), muscle fibre type, inter-muscular coordination, psychological state, also by crazy things like neural firing patterns, hormonal states, cellular pH etc. There is any number of things that compose it.

However, for any athletic activity or endeavour, is there such a thing as too strong?

Well, weight training in the wrong way and gaining needless size can make you slower and stronger, but that's only a problem because you get slower.

Weight training can be a less-than-optimal use of time, if there's other skills you need to develop - strength levels can mask poor technique in any number of sports and slow development (or get your dumb arse injured).

Weight training can be fucking dangerous when done intensely and in the wrong way. Idiots make this process even worse, and everything they do is dangerous.

Point - properly managed, there is no too strong. Strong is the grandaddy of everything else and should be treated appropriately.

I've lifted through a cold before but didn't like it much. Fortunately it was fairly light.

yeah, me too. a stuffy nose actually ALWAYS clears up when i do cardio and doesnt bug me during lifting. however what i have is in my lungs and i don't think its a great idea to cough all over the old people. not to mention probably not get as much oxygen as my body is used to

Same.....if I'm not absolutely optimal in energy, I won't work out. I'll just go eat some burgers, drink water and protein shakes, play guitar, and kick ass on a grip master. Speaking of which, I've used that damn grip master so much my forearms are almost popeye-like.

It doesn't. I use the gripmaster only to get stronger wrists, fingers, hands, and forearms. In addition to that, I've played the double bass for so long that I've got strong hands to begin with.

And practicing helps my guitar playing, not strength.

Probably because it's releasing antihistamines like during sex. That's probably why you seem so addicted to the exercise you do, too. It's a rush.

I fyou've got it in your lungs though, that's bad business. i agree with those that say they rest when they aren't feeling up to par. Your body needs to utilize it's energy to fight off illness so let it. PB&J's and chicken soup! Lots of fluids. When you reach a point where you can't take more than 5 steps without leaning on a wall and puffing and panting from lack of air, you really take care of those lungs.

Yeah, it can do that. Just watch your doseage and rest. It's a bitch not being able to walk to the bathroom and stuff cuz you can't breathe. As long as the stuff from your nose isn't going down your throat and into your lungs it should help. I think the DM is an expectorant if I remember right and helps one cough the crap out. It took me close to a year to relearn to breathe to sing. Something I've done all my life practically. That was weird as heck.

Footy = football. Or "sawker" or Aussie rules football.

Club sport = playing a sport which involves teams.

Edit: I sometimes play basketball, and hockey, but just for rec. purposes.

i lifted this morning, i was amazed how crappy i did. i had to back up 5-10 pounds on the weights. i haven't lifted since friday because i've been sick, but i didn't know muscle emaciated that quickly. its even visible

Hmm, sometimes if I break for a few days it seems like my stamina improves and my muscles feel more rested and ready for an ass kicking. I dunno.

That's because your muscles have had time to repair themselves so they're stronger.

Tranny, your body has been fighting infection so those stores in your body have been busy in ways that aren't so obvious. That's why I suggested you go slow so you don't relapse.
I tried to go back to work when I was ill and ended up leaning against a wall 2 hours into my shift and getting taken home. I wasn't allowed to drive cuz of the dizzy spells I'd had so I had to wait. I was off for another week after that.

yeah, same here when i break from friday to monday. thats a good amount of time but it seems like any longer than that and its not helpful

I like lifting shoulders, my personal favorites are arnolds / military presses with dumbbells, and at the end of a routine, supersets with: standing curls and presses (olympic bar)

i have heard military presses are best done on a machine because with free weights its easier to mess up your rotator cuff (you REALLY don't want that)
