random speed question

heres a random question

is doing chromatics (1-2-3-4,2-3-4-5 etc etc) up to the 12th fret (12-13-14-15) at 170bpm fast? just wondering, because my friend can do it and hes been play the same amount of time as me and i cant do it and it sounds pretty impressive. he doesnt brag about it or anything, but i was just wondering how good that is.

Just practice keep it strict alternate picking .Try for economy of motion, start off slow and gradually build up your speed , You will be able do it in no time , use your metronome , rememember speed is not everything speed together with taste go hand in hand
good luck

whats up woth the chromatic scale, it not even rili a scale, i mean, hitting every note on 1 string as fast as u can.

its probaly not bad to pracyice it, but there much more usefull and cooler shit u can practice, right??.

im not meaning to flame ur or whatever, im just wondering or sumtin, im also drunk so forgive me

id say, get some sweeping done, and some scales, minor, harminic minor, and try improvising in that.

trhen after a while he can play the chromaic scale thingy at 3000 bpm, and i can make ur own solos etc,

what sounds coler to u??

sry if i didnt get the point in this thread and made a fol outa myself by posting this

Chromatic scale can actually be a good hand technique developer, because, your working all fingers at once, even distribution.

Chromatic scale is actually a scale, its just hardly anyone uses it for song writing, Except for 12-tone crappy contemporary classical music.

Sorry I am very fired myself, but with a different type of fuel

Meh, just practice. You'll get it. And it's decent for 9 months in my opinion. I've been playing for 7-8 i think.

you get better if you practice more, not if youve been playing longer, if you play 3 hours a day, for 3 months, then your not gonna be as good as a guy who practices for 7 hours a day for 3 months...

but you already knew that didnt you?

From what I've noticed, speed is like a timid deer in the sense that it's something that seems to come easier to those who don't aggressivly chase it, and allow it to become established on it's own terms through constant playing and correct practice.

The key to speed is restricted, accurate movement in both the fretting fingers and your picking. Keeping movements to a minimum allow for closer playing, and therefore faster playing. Focus on not allowing your fingers to become distant of the fretboard and reducing the size of your picking technique. You should be chasing technique such as this (check out "Speed Mechanics" for a good study guide and examples) and practice it for set periods of time, focusing on areas you have troubles in.

I've always assumed those things are scams, or at least they just say "practice these exercises for 8 hours a day for 6 months and you will be able to solo!".
Obviously you can't ask for your money back if you didn't put in the hours...
