Im trying to sing like mayhem or emperor or any of those other black metal bands.. any tips? because right now its comming out like a whisper

Mayhem has had three different singers(possibly more) that sound completely different.Be more specific.

try not to emulate their voices, but use your own singing voice, and concentrate mainly on hitting those notes correct..

For Maniac, just use a high raspy "growl." I don't recommend recreating Atilla's "on the shitter" vocals. And as for Dead, just watch The Ring, and start shrieking about how bad it is. The topic should be good enough to get a good Dead sound out of it.

Or better yet; just figure it out by yourself so it doesn't sound ripped off.

my tip for stuff like shagrath you should roll you R's in the backing of your throat

once you find a method practice to death...only way to improve the sound of it...and also build up "strength" so to speak.

Use vocal fry. Look them up on the internet, then vary the pitch. That's black metal vocals. Or you can do it naturally, and you'll feel a bubbling sensation at the back of your throat and will produce a growl.

kinda like constantly coughing up phlegm but with words...n music...and it sounds slightly cooler

Ok, my band is death metal so that's what I mainly sing - but I also like to play around with BM, and this is how I do it --

Shape your mouth into liket a weird frown, but still slightly open, and force the sound out of your chest and the VERY back of your throat, almost like a guttural but it kinda feels reversed if that makes sence. Now keep at it, keep practising and experimenting with tongue placement until you get a sound you like. I can almost get a sound like Maniac, its good for a bit of fun.

I got a BM band goin on, and i get a very Isahn sound going on.
This is what im doing...
basically pushing hard on my diaphraghm, but also..i dunno the term..almost scraping the back of my throat as the air is on its way up.
Dunno if that makes sense, but when you start doing it you should feel a kind of burning. that'll go away in a couple of months.
Btw its important you DO use your diaphraghm, or you could end up like that guy from Avenged Suckscock.
and we all know how shitty his growl was anyway...

mayhem is preety easy to sing like i can do it by whell hard to explain it started as ajoke but now it sounds like mayhem

Dead was the only singer that was worth a damn.
Keep your throat tight, and push as much air out as possible.
