Combo amp as a cab for a head/rack?
Is this possible?

depends on the connections available on your rack and the combo, but usually yes, it works
edit: do you mean using only the speaker as you said in the topic or do you mean using it as a poweramp and cab?
if the first alternative, then it usually doesn't work, but on some combos like the marshall dsl401 it does because of the tele speaker plug, but remember to match ohms

It would work, but it may not be the best tone, since the amps voicing will colour the sound whatever the settings would be. Or you could bypass the combo's pre and power amps and go straight to the speakers, but wouldn't it be better to just get an cab then?

No I'm not planning on doing it, I'm just curious if it was possible cuz the thought crossed my mind.

Head/Rack --> input of combo amp. The tone and sound will come out of the combo. You can use the combo to fine-tune the eq settings. I do this when my drummer's friend leaves his bass cabs. I plug a cable from my pedal's "left outupt" into the Ampeg's input jack, and it does a great job.

Does one run any risks while doing this?
Sorry to bring up a dead topic, but I've been wondering the same thing since I just bought a blue voodoo 60 but can't afford a cab just yet..so I wanted to know if I risk blowing up my combo, or anything like that, doing this. Is there anything that I definitely shouldn't do?

Yes, you do run the risk of over powering it. The BV60 should be loud enough without a cab (and if its not, get it checked out. RussianRoullette's rattled his entire house at 4. and that is a NICE/Well-built house). I suggest not doing it, for the fact that it truly is over powering the combo, and you really don't need to be blowing a speaker.
You may want to change out the speakers in it, though. I know Eric's (RR^) were total shit. one blew, and he just got some Marshall one put in it, and it sounds golden. So yes, maybe try some Celestions.
And buy from Dave. http://www.avatarspeakers.com I need to quit whoring him. But if he gets business, he won't complain to me.

You could quite easily wire the speaker to be used by an external source, you would either install a 1/4" socket in the back, or just utilise a redundant one, for instance, headphones or line out etc.

Er. It's not a combo, it's a head..the "combo" I spoke of would be the combo amp (peavey bandit) I'd be running it through. Thanks for the link, though, looks like good stuff!

Yeah, I could do that..what I'm asking is if I need to do this, though, or if I can just use the output of the head to the input of the combo like Dissection suggested earlier.
Sorry about the dumb questions, I'm not terribly knowledgable in the amp department yet.

If you're thinking about doing:
Head cab output > combo guitar input,
I'd strong advise against it... if you can take a preamp out, or an effects send, then use that, the strong signal that comes from your head output isn't mean to feed into a guitar input which is sensitive.

Alrighty, then. I shan't do it..I'll have to see if I can fiddle with the speaker.
Thank you all.

No problem. Drop me a line and tell me if you replace anything. I know just how to set those up.
